THE BATTLE OF SOWERBY BRIDGE

The Battle of Sowerby Bridge were fought on the forty fourth of March,
The King's Cross Fusiliers turned out, they marched as stiff as starch.
They marched as far as Bolton Brow and the enemy hove in sight,
And they called us generals nasty names and challenged us to fight.

29 March; On this day in 1912, Captain Robert Falcon Scott died in Antarctica returning from his expedition to the South Pole.

LOVE TO BE WITH YOU by Andy Irvine

We pulled up our anchor and set sail in sweet November
The day was fine, the sun did shine, such moments I remember
Your face so sad and lonely, fading from my view
But some small part of me remains with you

Sometimes I feel I must fly away
Sometimes I feel goodbye’s a word I just can’t say
But I’d love to be with you
I’d love to be with you

Outside the blizzard raging cares not for our distress
The bitter taste of failure so nearly sweet success
Brave enough we wer?, alas, to no avail
Such stories we could tell you had w? lived to tell the tale

Sometimes I feel I must fly away
Sometimes I feel goodbye’s a word I just can’t say
But I’d love to be with you
I’d love to be with you

The music I heard at the moment I was born
Was like crystal raindrops falling at dawn
All my life I’ve listened just to catch one sweet refrain
And gave up hope of hearing that sweet sound again

I hear it all around me now
I hear it all around me now
I hear it all around me now
I hear it all around me now

On this day in 1991: A jury returned a verdict of accidental death at the end of an inquest into the deaths of 96 Liverpool football fans who died in the Hillsborough stadium disaster in Sheffield in 1989. In December 2012, The High Court quashed the original verdicts and ordered fresh inquests.

      IVRY   by Patti Smith
I came across this performance via one of mySubstack accounts: Patti Smith singing her song ‘Ivry’ commemorating the death of French writer Antonin Artaud on March 4th 1948. Hopefully fits within the parameters for inclusion. Patti was in Paris a couple of weeks ago with an installation dedicated to Artaud and this clip is from a live performance at the Centre Pompidou. The Substack one is slightly better but I don’t want to bootleg it. This clip gives the flavour of the song:

Ivry

Ivry was the asylum where Artaud spent his last years. While I was listening to it I remembered the story about Artaud’s visit to Ireland which would make a droll film or song. Involving St Patrick’s walking stick or some nonsense, from memory. St Patrick’s day, Artaud’s death and the merry month of March. A nice hit…

On this day in 1824, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution was founded. Many songs have already been posted on these pages recording their valiant efforts to save lives at sea.

I shall just name the show Cork Jackets and Drill. This tells the story of the 1886 Southport lifeboat disaster, which claimed the lives of almost all the crew members of the Southport and St Annes lifeboats.

Songs and script by Southport-based playwright Len Pentin, who was supported by Chris Nelson, Siobhan Nelson, Clive Pownceby and Pete Rimmer - all members of the Bothy Folk Club - plus narrator Colin Wayte.

COAL NOT DOLE written by Kay Sutcliffe

What will become of this pit yard?
Where men once trampled faces hard
Tired and weary, their shift's done
Never having seen the sun

Til the blackbirds stopped their singing
The mission bells stopped ringing
And they closed the coal pit down

Verse 1
Ship set sail, Loaded down
In a hurry, to make the turn around
Weary faces, Tired crew
Names and places, I don't need to tell to you

Verse 2
Overloaded, Undermanned
Cutting corners, efficiency out of hand
Slack procedures, Undrawn lines
Free and easy, Touches of the times

Chorus
Rest easy, won't you lie easy
Though you drowned so near the shore
Rest easy, won't you lie easy
Your suffering now is o'er
