Subject: Lyr Req: An Chrúbach (Skara Brae, Beth Gadbaw))
From: GUEST,Exhausted_Hedgewitch
Date: 20 Feb 21 - 07:24 PM

Hello,

I am curious to know if anyone has the lyrics, or any other information, about the Irish Gaelic song 'An Chrúbach', recorded by Skara Brae on their eponymous 1973 album and by Beth Gadbaw (Leachman) & Margot Krimmel on their 2005 album 'White Birds'. (I am not aware of any other recordings).

Thank you very kindly.

I read that the CD has an insert with the words in both Irish and English, but I cannot locate the lyrics online.

an Irish Times article about Maighread and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill says
"An Chrubach will feature. Written by an ancestor of the sisters, it is about a cow who jumps off Tory Island in desperation and swims away - "

It's a bit hard to make out the handwriting on this document but the first verse is almost exactly the same as the way Skara Brae sang An Chrubach

https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4428366/4400163/4515855

One minor difference I noticed is line 5 "Níor B'fhada" ... instead of "Cha b'fhada". The meaning is the same whichever way you put it "it wasn't long" (her time on the island wasn't long).

An lá chuaidh an crubóg [an chrubach] go Toraigh
Níor chogann sé fodar no féar
Is ca dearr sise buithre le h-ocras
ach an chuaidh a bhí uirthí gabhail siar.

2//
Níorbh fada a seal ar an oilean
gur thriall sise arais go tír mór
deir daoine nar cogann sí ar an

gur glan sise imeall Ghaoth-Dobhair

3//
An lá chuaidh an crúbóg na

d'eirigh Eamon uí Dhubhchain 'na sheasamh
as dearc ar a cab 's·ar a car

Chuir sé láimh siar fa leath deiridh
d'éirigh an crubóg de léim ina seasamh

Exhausted Hedgewitch: I have scanned the relevant pages from the Skara Brae CD booklet and uploaded the image to Dropbox. You should be able to get it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/n28mpsqx5805dum/An%20Chrubach.jpg?dl=0

I probably got this from Internet Archive, I assume An Uiseog is a book or booklet

An Uiseog (1905) Donnchadh Ó Searcaigh

AN CHRÚBACH I dTORAIGH.

Fonn -- The Boys of Old Erin the Green.

An lá chuaidh an chrúbach go Toraigh,
Níor chúgail sí fodar ná féar,
'S níor leig sise búithre le hocras,
Acht cumhaidh a bheith uirthi 'g dul siar,
Níor bh'fhada a seal ar an oileán
Gur thriall sí ar ais go tír mór,
'S deir daoine nach gcoisgfidh sí an turas
Go nglanaidh sí timcheall Ghaoith Dóir.

D'éirigh Éamonn Ó Dubháin 'na sheasamh
Is d'fhiafruigh cá dteachaidh a bhó.
Hubhradh go rabh i Mín an Chladaigh
Ná i n-Inis Bó Finne d'á chómhair.
Deir daoine, má chuaidh sí go Croichshlighe,
Nach baoghal díthe pilleadh níos mó,
Ná tá Cormac ruadh 'deánamh curraigh
'Gus is aige tá craiceann na bó.

Deir Cormac, “Ní mhaoidhfear a craiceann,
Ná ní maith liom-sa aon dhuine d'á luadh,
Acht cuirfidh mé an cás i gcúirt easbog,
Mur saorfar go tapaidh an fear ruadh,
Mar shamhailt na laochraidhe bhí i dTeamhair
I ngníomhaibh 's i n-aigneadh go buan,
Ná 'n gearrfhiadh a chlaoidh le n-a chonairt,
Acht ní baoghal dó an currach chur suas.”

Bhí sí go lúthmhar i bponc seal
Le gearrfhiadh ag bun sléibhe ná ag bárr,
Go dtainic Éamonn Ó Dubháin as Toraigh
Is gur dhearc sé ar a cab 's ar a cárr.
D'amhairc sé uirthi siar fá'n leath deiridh
Is d'éirigh sí 'na seasamh i léim,
Sráid Ghuirt an Choirce gur ghlan sí,
'S bhí a cuid fhéin de'n mhargadh léi.

Beir sgéala uaim siar chun na Rosa,
'Ionns' ar an Dálach ar'b ainm dó Aodh,
Gur éaloidh an chrúbach as Toraigh,
'S go dteachaidh sí 'nonn ar an Ghaoth.
A samhailt ní rabh ins an tír seo,
Agus ní fhacas ariamh go fóil,
'Gus 'sé chluinim ar maidin Dia hAoine
Gur bhuail sí an cladach faoi sheól.

Maise, a Éamonn Uí Dhubháin i dToraigh,
Dar mo chúise, níor mhaith liom do bhó;
Ná budh tusa an fear clúiteach i mbaile,
Budh subhach a bhí seal i dtigh an óil.
Dá mairfeadh an chrúbach in d'aice,
Bhéidheadh lúdair comh farsaing le móin,
Is níor bh'fhearr léithi siubhal ar an talamh
Ná cúrsáil amach go tír mór.

Is dona a chlaoidh mé mo thuras --
An siubhal nár fhág crioth in mo stuaic --
Ó'n Luinigh 'nonn thríd Bhun na Leice,
'S go Croichshlighe, ag Cormac ruadh.
Bhí táilliúir na tíre ann, lucht teagaisg,
Is níor mhór leo-san marbhadh mo bhó --
Choingbheóchadh siad cómhrádh le heasbog
'S an pota ar an teinidh 'gabhail cheóil.

OK, screw this. This is the last time I've tried to help out on this forum.

It took me less than 24 hours from the original request to find the printed lyric, scan it from the booklet, edit it together in Photoshop, upload it to Dropbox and post a link in this thread.

And the OP never came back. There's no way of knowing whether they saw my post or downloaded the jpg from my Dropbox. Just silence. I suppose it's called "ghosting" these days.

I've gone to similar lengths before, with similar outcomes. No more. Fuck all y'all, you're on your own.

I've reached the point where I will NOT spend time looking for lyrics unless a GUEST poster replies to me first. I usually ask some sort of question: 'Do you have any further info about the song?' etc. If the individual doesn't reply to that, well, I don't waste any time on the request. It is frustrating, but on the bright side you located the complete lyrics and that's great. Thanks, michaelr.

Michael, We don't know whether or not Hedgewick saw our replies on this thread. Yours is the one that most completely fulfilled the original request. But I don't see why you are so stressed about whether or not people reply. Any lyrics or song information that is shared on Mudcat is going to help someone somewhere sometime.

Hi all,

Thank you everyone for your help--particurlarly Felipa, RunrigFan, michaelr, & Dónal. It's delightful seeing the wide variety of versions & transcriptions; I'm grateful for everyone's help!

[To Michael, I apologise for my delay, but I don't spend all that much time on this site. I thought I'd check back after a week, I had *no idea* there would be this much engagement).

Wishing you all well, good health, etc
