Ballade De Mercy

A Chartreux et a Celestins,
A Mendiants et a Devotes,
A musards et claquepatins,
A servans et filles mignottes
Portants surcots et justes cottes,
A cuidereaux d'amour transis,
Chaussants sans méhaing fauves bottes,
Je crie a toutes gens mercis.

A fillettes montrants tetins,
Pour avoir plus largement hôtes,
A ribleurs, mouveurs de hutins,
A bateleurs trainants marmottes,

Je fisse pour eux pets et rottes;
Je ne puis, car je suis assis.
Au fort, pour eviter riottes,
Je crie a toutes gens mercis.

Qu'on leur froisse les quinze côtes
De gros maillets forts et massis,
De plombees et tels pelotes.
Je crie a toutes gens mercis.

Written by a Françios Villon

One recording is Corvus Corax on their album Venus Vina Musica

Well, some people having a better command of English than me did it better. Here are some links
Original poem in original spelling (though it won't make it clearer!)
Translated by H. de Vere Stacpoole (1914) -though he left many old words untranslated. The "unprintable words" are "farts and burps"
Translated by John Payne (1918?)
Translated by Robert Louis Stevenson (1917)
and for those who understand Danish and can read blackletter En Pariser students bekjendelser (1892)

Here's the more literal translation I came up to, with some notes.

BALLAD 15 - BY WHICH FRANÇOIS VILLON CRIES MERCY TO EVERYONE

To Carthusians and Celestines monks,
To beggars and devotees,
To loafers and shoe slappers/scamps(1),
To servants and cute/elegant girls
Wearing surcoats and tight-fitted tunic dresses,
To presumptuous transfixed with love
Without embarrassment wearing tawny boots(2),
To all people I cry mercy.

To young girls showing their nipples,
To have widely more guests,
To crooks, troublemakers,
To tumblers dragging trunks,
To scatterbrains, to jokers,
Who go whistling in [groups of] five and six
To widows (3) and puppets/Virgin Mary figurines (4),
To all people I cry mercy.

Except to the traitor mastiff dogs(5)
That made me eat hard [bread] crusts,
Chew many evenings and mornings,(6)
[So much] that now I don't fear three droppings(7).
I'd make farts and burps for them;
I cannot, for I am seated.
Furthermore, to avoid quarrels,
To all people I cry mercy.

Let them have their fifteen ribs (8) crumpled
With big, strong and massive mallets,
Clubs and such balls.
To all people I cry mercy.

(1) young men who wanted to attract young ladies' attention would go out of the church flapping their "patins" – (Shoe consisting of a plate -generally wooden- more or less richly decorated, resting on the ground by a more or less thick sole, and fixed to the foot by means of straps. - Other sources say it means "galopin" = scalawag, scamp
(2) Tawny boots were actually laced ankle boots and the tawny color showed publicly that the person was in love/a lover. -I'm not really sure "méhaing" to mean "embarrassment/shame" but the primary meaning of "mutilation" doesn't seem to fit.
(3) Some versions have "marmousets" = young children
(4) A "mariotte" was an image / figurine of Virgin Mary (hence the word = "little Mary") or a puppet. Could it mean here well-behaved young ladies? Mystère et boule de gomme !
(5) The bishop of Orléans and his officers who jailed him (in Fr.).
(6) Some versions have " Et boire eau maintz soirs et matins," = "And drink water many evenings and mornings"
7) I couldn't make three droppings
(8) At that time people believed men had only 15 ribs while women had 16 because the Bible says that God took a rib from Adam to make Eve.

There are a few more lines:

Vor vollen Schüsseln
Corvus Corax

The original, slightly different, verses with the title "Die Ballade von den Vogelfreien" are in François Villon, Paul Zech: Die Balladen und lasterhaften Lieder des Herrn François Villon in deutscher Nachdichtung, Weimar 1931, p.72.

What language is this? It kinda sounds like Latin, but not like any Latin I learned in 6 years.
If you want to post songs, take your time and learn something about them and tell us.
Follow the standard Mudcat format specified in the FAQ:
Title of the song in ALLCAPS at the top of the message
then the songwriter name in parentheses
    Then a blank line
    then the lyrics
    then a double blank line
Then source information and any background information.

But most of the songs you've been posting are unsourced, untitled, and unexplained.

In other words, they're crap. We're not a dump for any old lyrics you happen to find on the Internet. We expect quality lyrics posts, not crap.

I suspected the song might be in Romanian, a rather obscure Romance language that is fairly closely related to Latin. And since I'm fluent in Latin, I can understand most of it. Do you speak Romanian? Latin?

You seem to be compulsively posting lyrics, basically dumping lyrics on us. If you post lyrics without explanation and without your own understanding, it's basically Spam, and we tend to block Spammers.
We deserve intelligently presented lyrics. Take your time, and teach us something. But if you keep just dumping lyrics on us, you're going to be blocked. Most of know nothing about "Corvus Corax," and that's something you need to tell us. Start out by telling us about Corvus Corax and their recordings, and THEN present their songs, one at a time, and discuss them.

Thank you.

I don't know the lyrics or translation, but I know a bit of info about the band. I'm not going to bore you

But Corvus Corax was formed in 1989 in (East) Germany. They are known for playing neo-Medieval music using authentic instruments. Their name is the Latin name for the common raven. The band often uses bagpipes as the solo instrument; their live performances attract attention with the bizarre look of the musicians being reminiscent of ancient Greek myths: half-naked, dressed in unusual clothes, wearing primitive tribal decorations, often tattooed.

They have gone through many changes, but have been together for 30 years.

They released their first album Ante Casu Peccati (1989)

Congregatio (1991)

Inter Deum Et Diabolum Semper Musica Est (1993)
Tritonus (1995)
Live auf dem Wäscherschloß (1998)
Viator (1998)
Tempi Antiquii (1999, compilation of works from 1988 to 1992)
Mille Anni Passi Sunt (2000 – limited edition of 2000 copies issued as 'MM')
In Electronica Remixe (2000)
Seikilos (2002)
Gaudia Vite (live) (2003)
Best of Corvus Corax (2005)
Cantus Buranus (2005)
Cantus Buranus Live in Berlin (2006)
Venus Vina Musica (2006)
Kaltenberg anno MMVII (2007)
Cantus Buranus II
Cantus Buranus – Das Orgelwerk
Live in Berlin
Sverker (2011)
Sverker Live at Summer Breeze & Castlefest (2011)
Gimlie (2013)
Ars Mystica – Selectio 1989–2016 (2016)
Der Fluch der Drachen (2017)
Skál (2018)

Tanzwut EP (1996)
Corvus Corax erzählen Märchen aus alter Zeit EP (2000)
Hymnus Cantica CDS (2002)

They have performed all around the world, playing to many crowds and still make music today.
They draw inspiration from Carmina Burana, with many songs in Latin, some in Old French/Ottican, Irish to name a few

The original members are Castus Rabensang, Meister Selbfried who were researchers in the music

"Ougenweide" is a song in Mittelhochdeutsch (Middle High German, 1050-1350), not Romanian. It was a signature song of the wonderful medieval folk rock band Ougenweide who recorded it in 1973 as the title track of their eponymous album, "Ougenweide".

Corvus Corax covered it in 1999 on their album Tempi Antiquuii. Up to now I didn't care vary much for this band or similar ones like In Extremo which seem to be mostly bad goth / fake medieval stage show. But some of the tracks Runrig Fan linked to on YouTube are surprisingly nice.

French and Occitan (not Ottican) are two different languages, so there's Old French and Old Occitan. They're both Romance languages but none is the "mother tongue" of the other.

To me (someone can correct me) the song is speaking about trying to impress the ladies and would do anything to get her. Flirting song?
