Brighton folkies of the '60's might remember Jack, host of the Springfield club with Terry Masterson. Jack became a popular writer of fantasy Arthurian stories. I'm sad to say that he died Monday in Kelowna, BC, aged 80. Perhaps the first 20 songs I learned I got from Jack, the best being his great version of "The Baron of Brackley".

Oh no! Jack was the elder brother of my school friend, Mike Whyte in Lincolnshire, UK. I spent a great deal of time at the family’s house back in my teenage years and, back in the ‘60s, Jack, Mike, and I were in a couple of bands together, although Jack’s participation was limited by his time at college in, IIRC, the Twickenham area.

Jack was possessed of a magnificent singing voice, and it was he who first awakened my interest in folk song. He truly was one of those who could ‘sing anything’. His ‘Camulod’ series of books are great pieces of historical fiction, and they achieved something of a ‘cult’ status with a large following on the Internet.

The last time i saw Jack was at Mike’s 50th birthday, around 25 years ago, although I still see his brother Frankie from time to time.

Very sad to hear of the passing of an old friend, someone I admired and respected enormously, and whose talent will be sorely missed. RIP Jack.
