Subject: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Raggytash Date: 26 Feb 21 - 04:04 PM Can anyone answer this crossword puzzler Noisy bovine provides safe passage (3 and 4) |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Mr Red Date: 26 Feb 21 - 04:26 PM Reminds me of the joke about the Isle of Wight Ferry. Moo and Cow have three letters. Or is it a cryptic crossword? Noisy being - anagram with additions? No, nothing coming to mind. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Jon Freeman Date: 26 Feb 21 - 04:32 PM No idea. I started by thinking noisy bovine could be f-ox but that's getting me nowhere except keeping me on what I think is a wrong direction. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Steve Shaw Date: 26 Feb 21 - 05:03 PM Cow horn?? Cow = bovine Noisy = horn, also part of cow Horn (Cape thereof) = passage But safe?...Can't equate that... |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Senoufou Date: 26 Feb 21 - 05:24 PM I think it might be FOX HOLE 'F' is for forte (loud) 'OX' is a bovine. Fox hole is a military term for a safe place for soldiers to pass through the trenches. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: The Sandman Date: 26 Feb 21 - 05:44 PM he was wholly foxed, as i would have been |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Steve Shaw Date: 26 Feb 21 - 06:02 PM Fox hole. Yep that's it! |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Raggytash Date: 27 Feb 21 - 03:19 AM Sorry, that doesn't work. The grid of the crossword has shaded spaces and the letters from those squares are Blank, M U L B L A. They should give you the answer. I think the remaining letter is a G but I'm not 100% on that |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: DaveRo Date: 27 Feb 21 - 04:05 AM Well, 'mad bull' might fit the noisy bovine but I see no connection with safe passage. A fox hole doesn't really fit with passage either - soldiers usually shelter in them, or fire from them. Certainly safe. I just read The Things they Carried, by Tim O'Brian. The soldiers in Vietnam spent a lot of time in fox holes. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Doug Chadwick Date: 27 Feb 21 - 05:27 AM I think the remaining letter is a G but I'm not 100% on that "MAD BULL" would give you a D instead of a G. Does that help to give a better guess at the other word? DC |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Jos Date: 27 Feb 21 - 05:46 AM I thought of FOG HORN. Cattle and oxen have horns, and a fog horn is noisy and helps keep sailors safe. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Doug Chadwick Date: 27 Feb 21 - 05:57 AM I can't get the link maker to work but if you copy and paste https://safe.org.nz/media-releases/animals-will-be-at-risk-of-injury-or-death-at-mad-bull-rodeo-this-weekend-safe-nz/ You should see that SAFE is a New Zealand animal rights group which has been complaining about the Mad Bull rodeo recently. Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Steve Shaw Date: 27 Feb 21 - 06:07 AM I no longer understand the question. I need to see the bloody thing. Where's this crossword? |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Mr Red Date: 27 Feb 21 - 10:26 AM fox fits. Now find a safe passage. something like a fox run? Nothing here fog horn might fit if there is a bovine called "og" (there is a Fogera in Ethiopia) No, come up blank again. Has anyone tried crossword answers websites? There are enough of them. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Raggytash Date: 27 Feb 21 - 10:29 AM In a local rag Steve. It is a normal crossword and some of the answers have a shaded square. When you take the letters from the shaded square you then have to make a word, or words. The letters this time were M U L B A L D and you had to make two words of 3 and then 4 letters. The clue to these words was Noisy Bovine provided safe passage. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Nigel Parsons Date: 27 Feb 21 - 10:39 AM Those letters make "mad bull" |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Mr Red Date: 27 Feb 21 - 10:46 AM Fox Runs is 3 & 4 and fox fits, and fox runs are safe passages. That's it, I'm done. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Nigel Parsons Date: 27 Feb 21 - 11:23 AM I'm with Mr Red on this one. I do have to wonder whether there's a typo in the clue: Noisy Bovine provided safe passage. Noisy bovine = F ox. To get 'runs' you would need 'provides' (as in organises/runs). |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Raggytash Date: 27 Feb 21 - 11:42 AM Yes Nigel but you don't spell Fox Runs with the letters I have which I say once again are M U L B A L D |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Jos Date: 27 Feb 21 - 12:23 PM The only 3/4 combinations I can make with those letters are MAD BULL, MUD BALL, BAD MULL, BUD MALL, DAM BULL They become increasingly meaningless. I too think there may be a misprint somewhere - maybe one or more of the seven available letters. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Steve Shaw Date: 27 Feb 21 - 12:31 PM Mrs Steve can be extremely mad with me yet be strangely and ominously silent. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Raggytash Date: 27 Feb 21 - 12:34 PM I may have come up with a rationale for the answer. In the harbour in town the pier ends are known as Bull ends, it MAY be a reference to them. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: DaveRo Date: 27 Feb 21 - 01:11 PM Cheyenne chief Mad Bull once visited the US President (I don't know which one) - Picture I expect they were granted safe passage. (No, neither do I.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Jeri Date: 27 Feb 21 - 01:44 PM I'm voting for "mad bull". Google "mad bullet underground". Safe passage. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Raggytash Date: 27 Feb 21 - 01:47 PM The photograph indicates it was taken in January or February 1924 so the President would be Calvin Coolidge |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Mr Red Date: 27 Feb 21 - 03:00 PM Aha, the spelling mistake? Maybe "noisesome bovine" would provide a "Mad Bull", but the passage passes me by. Decidedly unsafe logic IMNSHO. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Mr Red Date: 27 Feb 21 - 03:05 PM a reel speeling mistook. noisome |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Steve Shaw Date: 27 Feb 21 - 04:21 PM Noisome has nothing to do with noisy. It means annoying, disagreeable, stinking, that sort of thing. |

Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Steve Shaw Date: 28 Feb 21 - 10:42 AM The "to egg on" one was in a Crackerjack sketch in what must have been the 60s. From memory: Peter Glaze, doing crossword: "any idea about this one..."To egg on....five letters...". Leslie Crowther: "Toast! Two egg on toast!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Feb 21 - 10:54 AM Are your clues cryptic or straight Dave. Could the 3rd be rewritten as Boys drum 3,3 ? |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Dave the Gnome Date: 28 Feb 21 - 11:06 AM Decidedly cryptic, Mo. And best resolved after a few pints of Holt's bitter :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Mr Red Date: 28 Feb 21 - 11:14 AM Noisome has nothing to do with noisy. It means annoying, disagreeable, stinking, that sort of thing. But a lot closer to Mad Bull - spelling mistake, misnomer, it has been mooted. The clues are there. Just one avenue until there is a definitive answer. Geeeeze how obvious does one have to make it? Binary Brain. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Steve Shaw Date: 28 Feb 21 - 12:32 PM You never make anything obvious and I don't call you names. Grow up. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Jos Date: 28 Feb 21 - 03:12 PM From the latest post to the thread (above the line), "What is a bulgine?" "the bull engine was an auxiliary steam engine used to raise large sails" Nothing about madness or being noisy, but it might help in providing safe passage. |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Steve Shaw Date: 28 Feb 21 - 03:19 PM Ex-Lax provides safe passage. Could be a fertile new line of enquiry... |

Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Steve Shaw Date: 28 Feb 21 - 07:02 PM The 3:5 5:3 mix-up happened about half an hour after my jab, Dave. I'm claiming side effects... I must say, I'm completely lost on this crossword thang. Are we still doing it, and where do I go from here, or is it too early in the morning or too late at night...? |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: The Sandman Date: 01 Mar 21 - 02:55 AM wilting willie , re dave the gnome post |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Nigel Parsons Date: 01 Mar 21 - 06:33 AM This reminds me of an earlier 'crossword' thread also started by Raggytash which didn't come to a definite conclusion Here Most crossword and puzzle setters usually give a 'correct' answer eventually. Will we get to see one for this? |
Subject: RE: BS: Crossword dilemma From: Dave the Gnome Date: 01 Mar 21 - 06:37 AM Ok, Nige. Here are my answers then To egg on - Toast Aquatic Mammal - Ships cat African drum - Mud hut |
