Was I hallucinating (not likely!) or did I see somewhere on the Mudcat html threads a mention of a way of making a hypertext link WITHOUT having the link show up with underlining under the words? If you know how to do this, I would really appreciate it if you'd share it me.

This is sorta HTML stuff...

When I tried to copy and print out a thread here, my word processing program (either Microsoft Word or Lotus WordPro) wouldn't take it, so I copied and pasted into NotePad. Here's my question...how do I get rid of all the spaces? I assume I have to get back into Word or WordPro. I know how to search and replace all the > signs in my email forwards, but I simply can't figure out how to use the trim function in WordPro. Any thoughts?

Hi Mary in Kentucky,
if the only purpose of putting a thread into Word is the printing of it, why don't you use the print feature of your browser?
Just for a test I copied and pasted this thread here into Word (Word 97, SR1). Although it looks a bit different there this is mostly because the images are missing. So I don't know which spaces disturb you. If you can be a bit more specific, I might be able to help.

type a left angle bracket <, then type a href=,

then type,(or better, paste) the address you want folks to go to as in: http://www.mudcat.org/

then type a right angle bracket >

then type the words you want folks to READ..this can be the address again, or a descriptive phrase....

then type another LEFT angle bracket <, and back slash /, to indicate the expression is finished, then a last right angle bracket >

this ends up looking like this [a href=http://www.mudcat.org/]GO HERE[/a], but with < & > instead of [ & ]...(Joe will probably post his fancy version again...I can almost do it, but am rushing right now)(if you don't do a special trick, the demo ends up working, and you can't see the point)

It seems to have to do with what fonts are installed locally, not with the HTML version. My current browser shows ASCII 253 and 254. Numbers 256-258 show as question marks, as they must, because 255 is the highest number that can be specified with eight bits.

When you want to      space        Something        out, you have to use a non-breaking space " " (without the quotes). To get an ampersand (&) you need "&". Don't forget the trailing semi-colon.

When I post HTML messages, I edit them in a text editor and check it with my browser 1st, so I have a vague idea what it should look like.

Next, we can discuss thumbnails ;-)

yep, Will, I remember when I first figured out how to do that...

(another trick is to 'steal' HTML when you see something you'd like to imitate, by using the drop-down menu at the top under 'view'(at least in Netscape) and choosing 'page source'...this gets the HTML that created the page you are looking at, and you can scroll around until you find exactly how the effect you admire was obtained...then highlight and copy it and mess with the details..or, just make a file and keep lists of your favorite HTML there until you remember how to do it by yourself..I used to paste the basic 'blue clicky thing' in, paste in the address, THEN fill in what I wanted it to say...)

Hi MudGuard--sorry I'm a bit tardy in getting back to this thread. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I just printed out this thread, and it took 15 pages. It probably would have taken about twice that many in Notepad because every line has a few too many characters on it and is continued on the next line with only one word on that line. Then there are double and triple spaces between posts.

The reason I wanted to copy and paste into a word processing program was so that I could edit out things, thereby having fewer pages to keep up with. The first page and a half lists the posters, and then there are menus and double spaces between posts.

Ideally, I would copy and paste into Word and just delete the stuff I didn't want. But when I tried that, I just got a blank box (maybe I need to go back and try again). So I pasted into Notepad and got lots of extra spaces and lines which would take too much time to go through and delete. I could then copy and paste this into Word and use the search and replace functions, but I couldn't get the search and replace to work for deleting spaces.

Is this at all clear?

You CAN make a thumbnail with PSP, but making it clickable is a matter of HTML..(that is, adding a code that says "when clicking this pic, do 'x'"

his code looked like this, only with < > instead of [ ]

one can either 'learn' this, or use an HTML editor that writes it FOR you...I am about to launch into a 2nd level of this. To show it here, I simply copied his code from the 'page source'....the trick of putting a picture on THIS page, (called 'inline' pics) is simply the part of the code that says 'img src..' etc...but Max has asked us NOT to do many images, since, if the page where the image is located is down, or slow, this thread will be very slow to load while it waits for that image. Ina passing thread, it might not make much difference, but some of these threads last for weeks, and are often refreshed, so a cute little image might be there for a few days, then be taken off, and the link would no longer work, and all your friends would be grumpy that the thread was S*L*O*W...

(I'm sure Wincing Devils page is pretty safe, but....)

(a couple of years ago, we did a thread that included a bunch of Winnie-the-Pooh images, and it got to be a real hassle!)

sorry I am not too familiar with Word, so I can't help you there.
But if you want to remove something at the beginning and/or at the end of a page, move the mouse cursor to the first thing you want, press and hold left mouse button, move mouse curser to the last thing you want and release left mouse button. The part of the page should now be highlighted. Now go to file menu and "print..." command. In the box select "Selection only" instead of "All" where you are asked for the print range.

to handle Russian..(Cyrillic) you would have to go to "edit,preferences, languages" in the drop-down menu, and choose to view pages in Russian...but then, anyone you wanted to post to, would ALSO have to have that option enabled...so it is not really easy to mix languages that do not share the 0-255 character set that is the Windows default....(now, there ARE programs to allow certain Asian languages to be viewed. One called NJWin has support for several, including 3-4 or more Japanese & Chinese scripts. It works only when you enable it, and 'looks' at pages you view, and renders any chosen characters in thier proper form.. Perhaps there is something similar for Cyrillic *shrug*)

I think I got it! Edit/Find/More/Special Turn on the Hide/Show and search and replace paragraph marks.

In general, you can search and replace in most word processing programs. The trick is to know the vocabulary for what you want to do so you can find the appropriate words in the help menu.

I made two mistakes (OK, three or more.)

1)When I copied and pasted into Word I did something wrong. It WILL work.
2) I didn't use the show/hide function to see all those paragraph marks.
3)I didn't know the words to use in the help menu. Somewhere in the search and replace help I read about the special button.

I'll play with this some more. I think for the kind of editing I want to do, I'll have to manually insert some kind of mark and then search and replace that mark. This was discussed here somewhere as a quick and easy way to put lots of break marks at the ends of lyrics lines.
