I'm glad to see that the eruption is in the same remote area as before. A 5.4 earthquake close to that nearby town (Grin something) had people concerned.

So, the options are, to open a new volcanic eruption thread,
or refresh a recent one -- you may see what I chose.

This time the eruption is located in Meradalir, Iceland.

I visited Iceland a few years ago. I had a local beer called 'Gull', which I found meant 'gold'.
Also visited an impressive waterfall (I was en route to Niagara). The waterfall was Gullfoss, or 'Golden Falls'.
Like 'golden showers', only bigger ;)

The Reykjavik Grapevine is still posting stories online
in English at its website.
These stories are accompanied by a plea for donations
because the Grapevine is running out of funds
thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.

Thanks, Skarpi. I'm glad it is slowing down. Our poor atmosphere doesn't need those gasses, and the ring road and the fiber-optic cable don't need lava.

Skarpi?   Let's try phrasing the question another way,
because I think I understand Leeneia's question.

          [Gel ding ar da lir]
          syllable by syllable   --    atkvædi

Leeneia's question can be understood in terms of
syllables, and
the emphasis on each syllable.

There is a stronger emphasis on some syllables,
while other syllables sound weaker than the others.

When Leeneia says "loud" she means "strong emphasis"
and she wants to know:

which of the FIVE syllables       atkvædi
has the strongest emphasis?   áherslur?

Is it the first syllable, "Gel"
or
is one of the other four syllables
stronger in emphasis than "Gel" at the beginning of the word?

(okay, okay, I'm too fussy/scrupulous/punctilious --

             pirrud / samviskusamur / stakur ...)

Skarpi, I have a friend who with her husband will travel to Iceland in the first week of August. I'll send you each other's Facebook information in case there is any way you two can say hello or you can point her at a concert going on. I don't know if they're going to go look at lava, but they do have plans to visit waterfalls.

The eruption is still going on. So far there have been 9 vents, but at present only number 5 is still erupting.

This segment of 60 Minutes gives an overview:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LI8Gcpawvo

They say the lava is coming from 9 miles down. And they pronounce it:
GELL ding a dahl er. The G is hard. (Wikipedia says the nearby Meradalir is the valley of the mares. Is Geldingadalir the valley of the geldings? No one says.)

I have watched a lot of video of volcanoes, and almost all of it shows a volcano's peak as seen from a distance. With this volcano, we see so many parts of the process - the fountains, the lava rivers, the cooling beds, the lava emerging from the base of the cone, sections of the cone breaking off and plunging back into the pool of lava to be melted again.

Few volcanoes have been studied in such loving detail.

Yes, the eruption still seems to be going strong.

Seeing this eruption has made me sense something of the length of geologic time. This eruption has been going on for 3 or 4 months, yet look how little it has changed the landscape. Then I realize that all of Iceland has been built up by eruptions like this.

Yes, some eruptions were probably bigger, but man, think how long it must have taken to assemble the entire island, one lava fountain at a time.

After a partial crater wall collapse at about 9 am local time the vent has given up his week-long geyser-like behaviour and is back to continously pouring out lava.

The volcano is showing new behavior - sending lava many meters into the air, so violently that it is now visible from Reykjavik. Here's a link:

https://www.euronews.com/2021/05/03/icelandic-volcano-becomes-more-volatile-and-powerful

(This page gives a couple of paragraphs, then says "Read More." But I never could get it to show me more.)

The article says the volcano is cycling between quiescence and eruption. Perhaps some unknown process is hold lava back until pressure builds up to the point where a huge lava fountain occurs. Perhaps the overall amount of energy at the site is unchanged.

It must be a remarkable thing to see - though I would only watch from a great distance.

A mere glacier won't stop an eruption. What it will do is melt, and the meltwater may react with the rising magma to create an explosive phreatic eruption.

I decided to learn some Icelandic words.

dalur = valley
klettur = cliff
fjara = beach

At our volcano site, dalur seems to become dalir, so that the eruption started in the Geldinga valley, Geldingadalir. I hope Skarpi will correct that if it's wrong.

The fissure has opened further, and lava is flowing into an adjacent valley, the Meradalir. Apparently these valley are completely uninhabited, so that's good.
==========
On YouTube, I look for footage posted by ruv.is, the official "natural-resources" agency of Iceland. One day I looked at a different source, which seemed sensationalized, and commenters said that some of the footage came from Hawaii.

Every time I go to the live camera I am offered a translation of the Icelandic below, so I decided to try it.
The English is not as good as Skarpi's. The translations range from charming to incomprehensible. Here are a few examples:

‘The night was quiet and today is well under way for a soda walk ...’

‘things have been going well, says Field Director Sigurdur Bergmann. At least he says twinkles in the air in terms of tomorrow.’

‘She builds her own bosges and since then it's been brought so much into the lava pond that the bosgeians have given themselves up and started leaking from it. It happened last night. The bosoms are at their lowest in the northwest.’

‘Bored weather is south by sea and will be through the night, but is expected to go down in the morning. But those planning a volcanic expedition tomorrow need to get ready well because it's going to be cold in the weather.’

‘no one had melded themselves from Grindavík or anywhere else by The South’

‘There was boring weather at the eruption sites today, but traffic was mostly traumatic, police said.’

‘the new crack is aluminium long and one that opened at the beginning of the eruption in Geldingadalur, and this is probably aluminium big’

Here's an interesting article about the gases produced by volcanoes. I never knew about CO2 pockets or about gases coming out of the ground near the volcano, ground that looks perfectly innocent.

you can look but don't breathe

I saw two young children at the site yesterday. That strikes me as a very bad idea.

I wonder if the gases emitted by a given volcano are steady, or do they spike and drop in concentration over time? I read that the H2S level here is three times the legal limit, but if it might spike, there is very serious danger.
