Subject: Lyr Add: The Even Given Disaster-2021
From: Charley Noble
Date: 26 Mar 21 - 09:26 PM

This song is incomplete and needs some more verses:

"Ever Given" Disaster

We was ninety miles from Port Suez,
Forget it I never shall;
What a terrible time we had that morn
On the old Suez Canal, me boys,
On the old Suez Canal!

The wind it was a-rising,
The sand was blowing free;
The pilots on the flying bridge
The bow they could not see;
A hefty gust then struck the ship
And she nosed into the bank;
Her stern swung out the other way
And the “Ever Given” was tanked, me boys,
The “Ever Given” was tanked.

Well, first we tried her full astern
But found it was no go;
Then we tried the bow thrusters
But she never stirred no mo';
Then a salvage tug latched on her stern
And tried to swing her round,
But the hawser bitts ripped off her deck
And she would not leave the ground, me boys,
She would not leave the ground.

The tune, of course, is from "The Erie-e Canal."

We'll have to excavate the banks
To free her where she's bound
We'll have to dredge from stem to stern
And try to swing her round
And then if she still is fast
We'll have to get a crane
And take containers from her deck
To float her once again, me boys
To float her once again

To be continued

Evergreen is the shipping company. You'll see that name everywhere in major seaports. The name of the ship is Ever Given, one of the largest ships in the world.

Thanks for the link about horn blasts, Guest #. I had no idea.

Now, the rules on the BoatUS site are for vessels which are leaving the dock or overtaking another vessel. The tugboats in the video aren't doing anything like that, so I suppose tugs have special signals. Perhaps since the situation was unusual, the operators had agreed-upon signals just for the job in hand.

What was unusual? Enormous boat sideways in a small body of water with its bulbous bow stuck deeply in sand, probably clayey sand.

Jack, I agree about the sounds being recorded.

Here's what I've ended up with:

By Charlie Ipcar, March 26-30, 2021
Tune: traditional “The Erie-e Canal”

“Ever Given” Grounding

We was four miles north of Port Suez,
Forget it I never shall;
What a terrible time we had that morn
On the old Suez Canal, me boys,
On the old Suez Canal!

Now the wind it was a-rising,
The sand was blowing free;
The pilots on the flying bridge
Were so blind they could not see;
A hefty gust then struck our ship
And she nosed into the bank;
Her stern swung out the other way--
“Ever Given” was tanked, me boys,
“Ever Given” was tanked.

Well, first we tried her full astern
But found it was no go;
Then we tried the bow thrusters
But she never stirred no mo';
Then a salvage tug latched on her stern
And tried to swing her round,
But the hawser bitts ripped off her deck;
She would not leave the ground, me boys,
She would not leave the ground.

Then the backhoes dug her bow out,
And they brought in The Big Suck,
But even with ten tugs a-hauling,
The ship she just stayed stuck;
So they pumped out all the ballast,
Awaiting the rising tide,
While the crew on deck did their bit,
Racing from side to side, me boys,
Racing from side to side.

As the sun came up on the sixth day
Her stern shifted from the muck,
And with eleven tugs pushing and pulling
They got her bow unstuck;
The crews were all a-cheering,
Tug whistles blared to the shore;
She’s bound for the Great Bitter Lake;
She’ll not return more, me boys,
She’ll not return no more.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Cheerily,
Charlie Ipcar

The Loadstar 1 April; For the vessel, now at anchor at the Bitter Lakes area undergoing technical inspections, a possible date of departure to ports of discharge has yet to be set. While the backlog of vessels waiting to transit Suez is now expected to be cleared over the next couple of days, shippers and freight forwarders with cargo on the Ever Given could be in for a long wait for it to be released.

As the investigation into the grounding of the Ever Given in the Suez Canal begins, the vessel's Japanese owner, Shoe Kisen, this morning declared General Average. This leaves shippers with uninsured cargo highly vulnerable to losing it, as the owner can hold the goods under lien until the deposit is paid. Shippers with insured goods will have those deposits covered by their insurers.

The last time General Average was declared was following the 2018 fire on board the Maersk Honam. After declaring GA, the adjustor fixed the salvage security at 42.5% of cargo value and 11.5% as a GA deposit – this meant a shipper with a cargo worth $100,000 needed to pay a combined deposit of $54,000 to get its cargo released.

BBC News Published 2 hours ago Suez Canal traffic jam caused by stuck ship Ever Given 'cleared'. More than 400 vessels were left waiting at either end of the canal when the 400m-long Ever Given became wedged across it on 23 March. But Egypt's Suez Canal Authority says the shipping traffic jam is now over.

Henry,

Thanks for the update for what's happening in the Great Bitter Lake.

The last time I recall a song mentioning "losing its average" was a train song, maybe Old Ninety-Seven" or "Casey Jones." I can't say that I ever understood the phrase.

However, I think my ballad is long enough as it is unless something really dramatic happens.

Cheerily,
Charlie Ipcar

I hope you are not waiting for the content of a container. A month has passed without progress and nothing dramatic is likely to happen. The legal case will drag on and on!

The Suez Canal Authority has filed a $916 million claim against the owner of the Ever Given. The Ever Given will remain anchored in the Great Bitter Lake after an Egyptian court upheld a previous ruling on Tuesday preventing the ship from leaving the country. The Suez Canal Authority’s decision to arrest the Ever Given as leverage for its insurance claim is likely to further delay the General Average process. Last week the shipowner said it had notified “a number” of the owners of the approximately 18,000 containers on the ship to assume part of the damages demand.

And what of the crew? Abdulgani Serang, of the National Union of Seafarers in India, told Insider the 25-person Indian crew were in good spirits and have been treated well. Three members were permitted to leave the ship after their contracts expired, and two others were allowed to leave for personal matters.

13 May 2021; What could complicate the issue of any kind of full settlement further will be the fact that back on 1 April, the Ever Given owners - Shoei Kisen Kaisha – declared a ‘general average’ following the work to re-float the vessel.

‘General average’ is a legal principle of maritime law which means that all cargo owners on a vessel will potentially be required to share the expenses incurred by the ship owner in the rescue of a vessel.

Monday 5 July 2021; Egypt will release the container ship that blocked the Suez Canal in March, after it agreed a compensation deal with the vessel's owners and insurers. The two sides said the Ever Given would be allowed on Wednesday to leave the Great Bitter Lake, the canal's midway point, where it has been impounded.

UK Club, which insured the Ever Given's owner Shoei Kisen for third-party liabilities, announced on Sunday that a "formal solution" had been agreed with the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) to settle their dispute over compensation. "Preparations for the release of the vessel will be made and an event marking the agreement will be held at the authority's headquarters in Ismailia in due course," it added.

The SCA said the event would be held on Wednesday, and that participants would be able to watch the ship leaving the canal.

It is due in Rotterdam on July 22, leaving on July 24 and reaching Felixstowe the same day before heading off on July 25.

True, it wasn't a great maritime disaster. The Suez Canal Authority claims "one death, the sinking of one of our rescue boats and 48 ships having to find alternative routes."

But it will be more damaging to business. Shortages of garden furniture, building supplies, cardboard and other packaging are causing a headache for retailers and consumers as summer looms. A combination of problems - including disruption to the Suez canal - has increased competition for shipping container space and delayed delivery times.

Logistics UK, which represents freight businesses, says that a lot of the goods currently bound for the UK are likely to be for retailers who are stocking their shelves ready for the summer. There is a risk that some goods, such as perishable foods, could arrive too late to be sold.

Seaport Freight Services, a shipping and freight-forwarding company based at the Port of Felixstowe, has 20 containers of goods stranded on the Ever Given. "We're waiting on food goods like coconut milk and syrups, some spare parts for motors, we've got some fork lift trucks, some Amazon goods on there, all sorts."

And, finally, Felixstowe! The BBC reports;

The Ever Given blocked the major shipping lane in Egypt for nearly a week earlier this year. The 400m-long (1,300ft) ship, originally due to arrive in early April, finally docked at Felixstowe in Suffolk at about 16:30 on Tuesday. As it turned the corner for the home straight, noise levels from those waiting dropped noticeably to almost a hush, only to be broken by children shouting "It's here!". Wendy, who had travelled from Trimley to see the Ever Given arrive in Felixstowe, told BBC Radio Suffolk: "I've been following it from the Suez Canal, and I said to the grandchildren 'We will bring you down to see it when it hits Felixstowe'." One ship-spotter said the arrival had been "a long time coming, but it's worth it," while another said: "It's just all the publicity it has had. To see it finally here is quite amazing."

Goods in the Ever Given's 18,000 containers have an estimated value of $775m, but many of them will hold fruit and vegetables which will have to be destroyed, having passed their use-by date. Jake Flynn, owner of JF Global Cargo & Freight Disposal in Ipswich, said his business was expecting 20 to 30 containers from the ship. He explained that most ships contained some goods that needed to be destroyed as they had gone out of date, or sold on if their original buyer no longer wanted them. Foodstuffs are destroyed via anaerobic digestion, while the company will also deal with a host of items from TVs to clothing. "We don't know what it is going to be until we crack the doors open," said Mr Flynn.

The huge container ship that blocked the Suez Canal is being unloaded after it arrived in the UK. The Ever Given docked at Felixstowe, Suffolk, at 16:30 BST on Tuesday, its first UK visit since causing disruption to global shipping. The Port of Felixstowe said 2,000 containers were being unloaded by crane and the process would take about 24 hours. It said the 400m-long (1,300ft) vessel was due to leave at 02:00 on Thursday. The Ever Given's next destination after Felixstowe is Hamburg, Germany.

Meanwhile, Kingsway Golf Centre in Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, is looking forward to finally adding two new dinosaur models to its Jurassic Links crazy golf course. It said it had already cleared space around the 17th and 18th holes for the giant Tyrannosaurus rex model, nicknamed Dino, before it became stuck on the Ever Given. The course is also waiting for the arrival of Dino's 4m (13ft) wide pterodactyl friend. "The forced isolation for these two spectacular dinosaurs is over," said marketing manager Fred Dell. He said they expected the two models, plus other "dino bits and bobs" to arrive on Monday.

Evergreen said the vessel’s Hamburg call would be omitted, in accordance with the ship’s seaworthiness certificate, which has also directed the vessel to sail at lower speeds. Ever Given is expected to arrive on its first port of call, Rotterdam’s Delta Terminal, on 28 July to discharge cargo, including transhipment boxes, before leaving for the port’s Euromax Terminal, where on 2 August it will discharge Hamburg-bound cargo for transhipment. All transhipment cargo will be loaded onto the Ever Utile at Rotterdam’s Euromax terminals. The vessel will call at Felixstowe to discharge cargo for the UK.

Filmed at 6am this morning, 5 August 2021. Ever Given heads out. Container ship Ever Given is shown steaming out at around 10 knots along the Harwich Approach Channel towards Sunk Deep Water Anchorage, where she presently rests at anchor at 9.30am. Her AIS transponder is showing her destination as the Suez Canal, but in fact she is reportedly due to sail for Dunkirk where her bow bulb and underside will be inspected and probable repairs carried out. After that, depending on Evergreen's plans and intentions, she may resume some Northern European calls to collect exports and empty boxes for the backhaul leg of her rotation back to the Far East.
