I'm putting together a 4 piece traditional irish band and am looking for an origional name - all the good ones are gone! We are made up of a whistle player/singer, bodhran/singer, bouzouki/5 string banjo/guitar and a fiddler. We play and sing mostly Irish stuff but a bit of Scottish and Bluegrass. Any suggestions? Pete

How about Celtic Blue? It is actually a color of paint available from Sherman Williams...

After the discussions on certain players at sessions, what about

3 Musicians and a Bodhran

:-) as he ducks quickly.

Rana

Seriously though, I would avoid Celtic this etc since it is flogged left right and centre and can put you anywhere fronm the traditional to the new age

Good Luck. Love, annap

hmmm, good point about the "C" word...

what sort of sense of humor does your band have? How evocative do you want your name to be? Is it a foot-stompin' pub band? A serious ballad-singin' band?

how about The Stout Pilgrims?

Fergus Dancing?

there is also the option of naming yourself after a tune... Toss the Feathers

Geese in the Bog (I like this one)

Hummm, you guys in NYC? Only kidding...
The other day I was making a joke with a bartender about a certain band that I refered to as the McThingies... then I though, Hmmm not a bad name for a band that does not take itself too seriously.

How about "The Ferrymen" here's a song fer ye lads and lasses...Yours, Aye. Dave

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE FERRYMAN

All the little boats are gone, From the banks(?) upon the Liffey, The ferrymen are stranded on the quay, Oh the Dublin docks are dying, and a way of life was gone, and Molly it was a part of you and me.

Where the strawberry beds, Sweep down to the Liffey, I(You) kiss away the worries from your(my) brow, Cause I love you well today, and I'll love you more tomorrow, And if you ever loved me Molly love me now

Twas the only job I knew, It was hard but never lonely, The Liffey Ferry made a man of me, But it's gone without a whisper Forgotten even now, Oh it's over Molly over can't you see

[Chorus]

But now I'll tend the yard, And spend me days a talking I hear them whisper Charlie's on the dole But Molly we're still livin' and darling we're still young, That river never owned my heart and soul.

[Chorus]

@irish @boat @nostalgia filename[ FERRYMAN GE oct99

Why not call the band "Gallowglass" (They were mercenary, foreign influenced, not completely Irish, like your line-up's content?. That 5-string can be used only as chording accompaniment, is that correct? Let us know how you fit it in as it is very difficult to play irish trad on the 5-string, I think. Particularly jigs and hornpipes etc, reels are ok though. regards.

How about "Quasi-modal"? Gives it that strange familiarity and inside joke for traditionalists.

Just a thought. Do let us know what you pick.

I think the original "Pugma Ho" split many years ago so the name is free. I can't spell it in Gaelic and the phonetic equivalence is not exact but it means "Kiss my arse (or ass, in America)"

Well, though it is rather a common name for bands, in the States, Pog ma hone, is closer to the Gaelic, I would, if I absolutly had to use that as a name, use Pog MaHonney s Celi Band.
all the best

Of course The Pogues original name was "Pogue Mahone." I like the Gallowglass suggestion. After reading about O'Neill & O'Donnell at the battle of the Yellow Ford and those axe-wielding gallowglasses--it only makes sense--you do wield guitars (axes) don't you? Oohh howabout "Giant's Caseway"? I'm not going to say the best names, of course--I'm saving them for one day...one day...

How about "Woad to Hell" ....or "Rocky Woad"....
or wear Stetsons and be "Woadeo Cowboys"......
or serve your audience some kind of Irish stir-fry and be
"Wok and Woad"

You really can't beat Blarney Rubble. Since a Bakersfield band already has it, you could probably appropriate it for your neck 'o the woods.

Thanks for the suggestions - We are going to go for a play on the Blarney theme with 'Snog the Rock' Our first few gigs are actually at weddings, but watch out! As for the 5-string its used mainly for accompaning songs and a few bluegrass standards, but does sound well chording along to the tunes. Cheers Pete
