Here's another in the "As I walked out" cluster. At least insofar as I can tell, this isn't already anywhere here on Mudcat - and for once I have a full attribution on hand, from the liner notes on my physical copy of the album. (I have *not* attempted to transcribe the full counterpoints and harmony elements, which get progressively more complicated from refrain to refrain. For those you want to click through to the YouTube recording.)

AN IRISH SONG
written by Ed McCurdy

arranged & performed by the Chad Mitchell Trio ("Singing Our Minds")

As I walked out one May morning, to take the pleasant air,
I saw a pretty girl walking by with roses in her hair;
I stepped right up and I said to her, "Pretty girl, I think you're grand!"
She answered me and said, "Of course - I come from Ireland."

Polly-wolly-roo-wack-too-rye-ah - I come from Ireland.

"That's very nice, I'm sure," I said, "You do the country proud,
But would you like to take a walk somewhere beyond the crowd?"
She said that was a pleasant thought, so we began to roam,
And soon we reached a building grand, where this girl made her home.

Polly-wolly-roo-wack-too-rye-ah-whack-tither-oh - where this girl made her home.

She asked me to take off my coat, and rest myself awhile;
She stepped into another room, which caused me for to smile.
She soon came back to where I sat - she didn't keep me long -
And sitting down beside me, said, "I think I'll sing a song."

Polly-wolly-roo-wack-too-rye-ah-whack-tither-wither-polly-wolly-doo - "I think I'll sing a song."

And so this girl begin to sing in a voice both loud and clear;
She sang of dear old Ireland, the country she held dear.
She sang me songs I'd never heard; she'd learned them from her mother --
And when one song was finished, well, she'd start out with another.

Polly-wolly-roo-wack-too-rye-ah-whack-tither-wither-polly-wolly-doo - "She'd start out with another."

The hours went slipping quickly by, till daylight all had gone;
The night came all around us, but still she sang right on,
And when the morning came at last, I said, "I'll have to go;
It's been a very pleasant time, and now this much I know:
Ireland has leprechauns; she's suffered many wrongs;
Ireland has peat-bog fires...and an awful lot of songs!"

Polly-wolly-roo-wack-too-rye-ah-whack-whack-too-ra-lee-eye-oh.... (etc.)

LISBON It was on one Whitsun Wednesday, the 14th day of May.
WHEN I WAS ON HORSEBACK
Wasn't I pretty when I entered Cork city and met with my downfall on the 14th of May.

LISBON  aka   William and Nancy's Parting

’’And it was on one Whitsun Wednesday, the fourteenth day of May,
That we untied our anchor, and so we sailed away,
Where the sun do shine most glorious, to Lisbon we were bound,
Where the hills and fields are daintied with pretty maidens around.’

Mainly Norfolk; Seventeen Come Sunday / As I Roved Out / One May Morning / The Soldier and the Maid

The Broadside from Grimsby sang Seventeen Come Sunday on their 1973 Topic album of songs and ballads collected in Lincolnshire, The Moon Shone Bright. Nine of the fourteen songs on this album were collected by Percy Grainger in 1905 and 1906, amongst them this one. The Broadside commented in their liner notes: Seventeen Come Sunday, from Fred Atkinson of Redbourne, [9 September] 1905. A fine sturdy Dorian tune to one of the most widely-known sets of words. When Grainger published this song in 1912 he had to omit the seventh stanza. The Broadside sing Seventeen Come Sunday;

As I rose up one May morning,
One May morning so early,
I overtook a pretty fair maid
Just as the day was dawning.

Chorus (repeated after each verse):
With me ru-rum ray,
Fother riddle ay
Wok fol lare diddle-i-do

Her stockings white and her boots so bright
And her buckling shone like silver.
She had a dark and a rolling eye
And her hair hung over her shoulders.

Because May Day is (was?) the principal socialist holiday, there are many May *Day* songs from socialist and communist countries. A well-known one from the USSR is "Moskva" ("Moscow"):

Utro krasit nezhnym tsvetom
Steny drevnovo Kremlya.
Prosypayetsa s rassvetom
Vsya sovetskaya zemlya.
Kholodok bezhit za vorot.
Shum na ulitsakh sil'ney.
S dobrim utrom, milyy gorod,
Serdtse rodini moyey!

Kipuchaya, moguchaya,
Nikem ne povedimaya,
Strana moya, Moskva moya,
Ty samaya lubimaya!

(From memory, with inconsistent transliteration)

Here are Joe F's lyrics from there.

Staines Morris
                                                                                        Capo 2nd fret

Come ye young men, come along,
With your music, dance and song.
Bring your lasses in your hands
For ’tis that which love commands.

Chorus:
Then to the maypole haste away
For ’tis now our holiday
Then to the maypole haste away
For ’tis now our holiday

’Tis the choice time of the year
For the violets now appear.
Now the rose receives its birth
And the pretty primrose decks the earth.

And when you well reckoned have
What kisses you your sweethearts gave,
Take them all again and more,
It will never make them poor.

When you thus have spent your time
Till the day be past its prime
To your beds repair at night
And dream there of your day’s delight.

(repeat first verse)

Dh'éirich mi moch madainn Chéitin,
Mas moch an diugh bu mhuich' an dé e.

translation

I arose early on a May morning.
If early today it was earlier yesterday.
Sweet was the choir I listened to,
thrushes on the tops of the branches, larks above the moor.   Beautiful is the prospect, with the sun rising,
a calm morning under the dew of the heavens,
trout leaping in the pools.
There will follow health and happiness
for those who rise early

and another version

Faill il o hill u ill o

English Translation:

Hiùraibh o 's na hòro èile
Faill il o hill u ill o

I arose early one May morning

Chorus (after each verse):
Faill il o hill u ill o
Hiùraibh o 's na hòro èile
Faill il o hill u ill o

I heard news which gladdened me
That the able heroes had risen
To put spirit in the language of the Feinne
They had gathered together
Declaring the language of use
In the schools as well as English
Now there was a man
Now there was a man
Wise Fraser MacIntosh
Sing songs and tunes for him
Let him be praised to the heavens

A PLACE CALLED ENGLAND

I rode out on a bright May morning like a hero in a song,
Looking for a place called England, trying to find where I belong.
Couldn't find the old flood meadow or the house that I once knew;
No trace of the little river or the garden where I grew.

Whole thing at the above link, first verse to show the link to May:
Come and see the Morris men,
Dancing, dancing down the glen,
May be eight or nine or ten;
Oh, hear the fiddler playing;
They're going to the Maying.

CAMBRIDGE MAY SONG

Arise, arise, you pretty fair maids
And take your May Bush in
For if it is gone before tomorrow morn
You would say we have brought you none.

All through the night before daylight
There fell the dew and rain.
It sparkles bright on the May Bush white;
It glistens on the plain.

Oh, the hedges and fields are growing so green
As green as grass can be.
Our Heavenly Mother watereth them
With her heavenly dew so sweet.

A branch of May we'll bring to you
As at your door we stand.
It's not but a sprout, but 'tis well budded out
The work of Our Lady's hand.

Our song is done, it's time we were gone
We can no longer stay.
We bless you all, both great and small
And we send you a joyful May.

ARISE, ARISE (Northill May Song)

Kerfuffle - Arise,Arise
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d5k5PKt9j4

Arise, arise, you pretty fair maid
And bring your May bush in,
For if it is gone by tomorrow, morrow morn,
You’ll say we have brought you none.

We have been wandering all this night
And almost all of the day,
And now we're returning back again,
We've brought you a branch of May.

A branch of May we have brought you,
And at your door it stands,
It's nothing but a sprout but it's well budded out
By the work of Our Lord's hand.

THE PLEASANT MONTH OF MAY

`Twas in the pleasant month of May,
In the springtime of the year,

There runs a river clear. ‘

Has anyone else mentioned this beautiful song by Malicorne?

"The month of April has gone, the month of May has drawn near,
And let us marry the roses." [can that be right?]

What about this one?
"if there's a bustling in your hedge row
Dont' be alrmed now,
It's just a sprinkling (or spring clean?) for the May Queen."

stairway to heaven....Led Zeppelin...not folk,
but i remembered the word May from this song..

i always thought (until just now when i looked it up)
that it was a sprinkling..... another mondegreen revealed!

I also think sprinkling and spring clean so you are not alone. It is a constructive musical track regardless and it is def a good time to spring clean in UK !!

MARIONS LES ROSES

Le mois d'avril s'en est allé
Le mois de mai s'est approché

(Refrain)
Et marions les roses
Les roses font un beau bouquet
Les roses font un beau bouquet
Quand elles sont jolies.

Avons passé dedans vos prés
Les avons trouvés bien fumés

(Refrain)

Avons passé dedans vos blés
Oh comme ils sont tous bien grainés

(Refrain)

Mettez la main au nid des œufs
Que chaque main en prenne deux

(Refrain)

Moi qui suis le porte-panier
Je prendrais bien le nid entier

(Refrain)

Si vous n' voulez rien nous donner
À la porte nous allons crier.

LET'S MARRY THE ROSES

The month of April has gone
The month of May has drawn near

(Chorus)
And let's marry the roses,
Roses make a beautiful bouquet,
Roses make a beautiful bouquet
When they're pretty.

We went through your fields
We found them well manured.

(Chorus)

We went through your wheat fields
Oh, how much/well grainy they are!

(Chorus)

Put your hand into the eggs nest,
Let every hand take two.

(Chorus)

I, who am the basket carrier,
Would gladly take the whole nest

(Chorus)

If you don't want to give us anything,
At your door we're going to shout.

Malicorne live rendition (Hurdy gurdy festival in Anost, Summer 2013)

The BNF catalogue has a sheet music for 4-voice choir by Guy Delamorinière (1907 - ?). The song is said to be a "collection song" or whatever you call a "chanson de quête" in English = a song you sing whenever you go from door to door to collect money or anything else, here eggs. The song is said to be Provençal but the "Anthologie des chants populaires, 1" by Joseph Canteloube reads that the song is from the Albigeois and Lauragais areas of the Languedoc. The lyrics are a mix of Occitan and French -verses in Òc and chorus in French. The music is said to derive from Filii et filiœ. The Occitan chorus is about marrying girls which makes more sense than marrying roses.

From Vendée-
Can be found in "1000 chants 3", J.E. Berthier, Les Presses d'Île de France, 1979,
"Anthologie des chants populaires français, III", Joseph Canteloube, Durant & Cie, 1951.

HERE COMES THE MONTH OF MAY

Here comes the month of May when flowers fly with the wind (x2)
Flowers fly with the wind, so nice and pretty, girl
Flowers fly with the wind so pretty nicely.

The king's son is a-picking, is a-picking them up (x2)
Is a-picking them up, so nice and pretty girl,
Is a-picking them up, so pretty nicely.

He picked so many of them that he filled out his gloves (x2)
That he filled out his gloves, so nice and pretty girl,
That he filled out his gloves, so pretty nicely.

He brings them as a present, a present to his love (x2)
A present to his love, so nice and pretty girl,
A present to his love, so pretty nicely.

Take them, take them he said, take them, here are my gloves (x2)
Take them, here are my gloves, so nice and pretty girl,
Take them here are my gloves, so pretty nicely.

You will seldom wear them, only four times a year
Only four times a year, so nice and pretty girl,
Only four times a year, so pretty nicely.

For Easter, for All Saints, Christmas and St John's Day (x2)
Christmas and St John's Day, so nice and pretty girl,
Christmas and St John's Day, so pretty nicely.

I took it from
Mama Lisa's World and I tried to make it singable when I translated it though if you try to sing the translation, you'll see that the stress of the words doesn't always match the tune.

As sung by Nana Mouskouri
As sung by Hommage aux Aînés (Quebec)

LO MES D'ABRIL SE N'ES ANAT

Lo mes d'abril se n'es anat
Lo mes de mai es arribat

Eh! Marions les filles,
Les filles font bon marier,
Les filles font bon marier
Quand elles sont gentilles.

Botatz la man au nid dels uòus
Que cada man ne'n pòrte nòu!

(Repic)

Io que soi lo pòrta-panièr
Portarei lo nid tot entièr!

(Repic)

S'avètz manhans* a espelir
Dieu vos los farà reussir!

(Repic)

S'avètz filhas a maridar
Dieu las vos farà ben plaçar!

(Repic)

E si nos volètz res donar
A vòtra pòrta anam c... ridar!**

THE MONTH OF APRIL HAS GONE

The month of April has gone
The month of May has arrived

(Chorus)
Hey, let's marry the girls,
The girls are good to marry,
The girls are good to marry
When they're nice.

Put your hand into the eggs nest,
Let every hand to bring nine!

(Chorus)

I, who am the basket-carrier,
Will carry the whole basket.

(Chorus)

If you have silk worms (eggs) about to hatch out
God will make them succeed!

(Chorus)

If you have daughters to marry off,
God will make you place them well

(Chorus)

And if you don't want to give us anything
At your door we're going to sh…out!

(Chorus)

*Southern France had an important silk farming production during the 19th century that slowly decreased till WW II when it disappeared. Today's production is anecdotal.
**In Canteloube it reads like that but in "Anthologie de la chanson occitane", Cécile Marie, Maisonneuve et Larose, 1975, it's spelled out "cagar" without the "c…ridar" thing which translates beautifully in French as "c… rier" and in English "sh…out".

As sung by
La Mal Coiffée (a 4 women band)

CAMBRIDGE MAY GARLAND SONG

Cambridge May Garland Song - Mary Humphreys
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QbB3XOW9RM

Good morning, lords and ladies,
It is the first of May;
We hope you like our garland,
it is both fine and gay.

Refrain To the greenwoods we will go.
To the greenwood we will go,go, go,
To the greenwood we will go.

I’m very glad the spring has come
The sun is shine so bright
The little birds upon the threes
Are singing with delight

Refrain

The cuckoo sings in April,
The cuckoo sings in May,
The cuckoo sings in June,
In July she flies away.

Refrain

The roads are very dusty
Our shoes are very thin
We have a little money-box
To put our money in

Refrain

Well the Cornish Floral Dance, written by Katie Moss over a hundred years ago, in spite of its mentions of summer nights and summer seas, was actually inspired by the Helston Furry Dance, which takes place every year on May 8. So I'll claim that one for Kernow! I was brought up on the Peter Dawson recording, unsurpassed in m'humble.

I `ad my nephew in the cab this morning. I was taking `im and `is mum round to the surgery. They are both going to get 24 `our virus tests.
My daughter works in the care business and `e wants to go to Bluewater shopping centre.
`e said, "Uncle Jim, do you and the band do May songs?"
I said, "Year we `ave quite a few up our sleeves."
`e said, "Which ones?"
I said, "Well there`s "Hal and To", "The First of May", "Padstow Night Singing", "Following the old `Oss", and one about dancing your sweetheart around, to name but a few."
Then `e said, " Do you like "Starwars??"
I said, "Well, I`ve seen some of`em"
Then `e said, "MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU!!"
Little Bugger.

The Burning of Auchindoon (alt spelling Auchindoun), is on my Silly Sisters CD and is sung by June Tabor and Maddy Prior.

As I came in by Fiddich side on a May morning
I spied Willie Macintosh an hour before the dawning

“Turn again, him again, turn again I bid ye
If ye burn Auchindoon, Huntly he will head ye.”

“Head me or hang me that will never fear me
I will burn Auchindoon ere the life leaves me.”

As I came in by Fiddich side on a May morning
Auchindoon was in a blaze an hour before the dawning

Crawing, crawing, for all your crowse crawing
You've burnt your crops and tint your wings
An hour before the dawning

1. Come, come my lads and listen here A fisherman's song you soon shall hear
What I did and undergo When first I went a cod-banging O
Chorus
To my lal fol the day Riddle all day
This is the smacksman's life at sea

2. How well I remember the fourteenth of May A big barque ship she came our way
She came our way and she did let fly And the topsail halyards they flew sky high
Chorus

3. And now we draw near Harwich pier The young and the old folks they both draw near
To see us get our fish on deck And crack their skulls with a little short stick
Chorus

4. And now my song it is nearly done And I hope that I've offended none
But I don't think I've got it complete 'Cos I've only been in the trade about a week
