-Joe Offer- Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of May ie: (A) Any songs with May in the title (B) Any songs with a May date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in May even if the lyrics do not actually say so. It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and also more sources of information about them. Below is an alphabetical index of the titles collected in this thread until the end of April 2022. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be jumped to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occurs. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “POST” button to jump to the end of the thread. I shall sometimes rearrange “ late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked.When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below. It was set to music by Chris Kempster, but I couldn't find a recording of that setting online so you'll have to settle for the setting I did find. They are getting intrusive, even added a title - not of my choice - to lyrics I wrote and posted. In this case, the editor should have identified him/her-self as having supplimented the post. Yes, I learned the song in my schooldays from recordings by Joan Baez and Pete Seeger, but my first choice for an example would be Jean Ritchie recording as an example often the merry month of May is in the second verse rather than at the beginning Clifton Hicks (with banjo) Tom Rush (lush guitar playing) Note the words of the broadsheet used to illustrate the Tom Rush video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSX6Ts-OBXM (clickable link above). Sarah Makem sang a version in which the story is placed at Michaelmas time, but the merry month of May is a more common setting for the story. She noted: There's another version of The Wagoner's Lad in my well-thumbed copy of Alan Lomax's Folk Songs of North America, credited "As sung by Buell Kazee, Eastern Ky., Folkways 7, 251" and Cecil Sharp gives four different versions in English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians. The closest one to mine, melodically and lyrically, is that collected from Mrs. Jane Gentry at Hot Springs, North Carolina, on 14 September 1916 [VWML CJS2/9/242 ]. Mrs. Jane Gentry sings Wagoner's Lad; In old North Carolina I was bred and was born, And in my own county I was a great scorn. Last May was the sunniest on record due no doubt to climate change. As an allotment owner I had to go and water the young seedlings I planted on a regular basis. Now we have a wet May, which is good for allotment owners and bad for everyone else, apart from farmers etc. May is such a contrast to a bleak mid-winter, made bleaker by covoid this time round. The light, the warmth, the growth in nature, the hatchlings. May is almost gone now. What will June bring ? More flowers, more light, more heat, an equinox no doubt. |

Another song about Sacco and Vanzetti Facing the Chair Andy Irvine: mandola & vocal Recorded in Dreieichenhain, Germany on 3rd December 1982. Being a massive fan of Woody Guthrie’s from an early age, I bought his records as they came out. “Ballads of Sacco & Vanzetti” came out on Folkways in 1960. Woody had recorded it in 1946/47 but was not really satisfied with the result. I had not heard of these two Italian anarchists whose trial for murder in Boston had led to them being found guilty and executed in the Electric Chair in 1927. His lyrics made a great impression on me and I studied the books which had been written about these events. As the trial unfolded, the bias of Judge Thayer became more and more evident and I came to the conclusion, along with Woody and most other socially minded people that a terrible injustice had been perpetrated. I wrote this song after visiting the courthouse in Dedham MA where so much of this trial had been held. Massachusetts Governor Endicott Peabody (1963-65) strongly opposed capital punishment and "vowed that he would not sign a death warrant even for the Boston Strangler, if he were ever caught and convicted." In 1977, Governor Michael Dukakis issued a proclamation vindicating Sacco and Vanzetti, stating that they had been treated unjustly and that no stigma should be associated with their names. |

The liner notes say, "My friend, great singer/musician & writer of sea songs & shanties, Jerry Bryant dug this up from the log of the Industry & culled it down from 40 verses to eight. Jerry put this to a traditional tune, without the chorus, as he found it. The tune here is from Neil Downey as well as its new chorus. Historically I've found the song very accurate & from the report of the Commissioners of Fish & Fisheries where in the remarks column it has the crew as "manned wholly by blacks" as well as the brig Traveler also mentioned in this song. Absalom S. Boston a Nantucketer, land owner, inn keeper & merchant put to sea at the age of 15 in 1800 & retired from sea after this voyage. He was married to the granddaughter of the famous Black/Indian sea captain Paul Cuffe who also commanded & owned a brig by the same name of Traveler only 7 yrs earlier, most likely they are one in the same although I've yet to verify this. Interestingly enough the Bostons were also no strangers to litigation. His uncle Prince Boston, a slave sailor was the first on Nantucket to sue for his ships pay & won. Absalom himself sued the state of Massachusetts on behalf of his daughter & niece for school integration of the state school on Nantucket & won, this being a first time in the nation. My message refers to the two previous messages, posted 24 and 25 May 2023. Henry P. mentioned Whitsun Dance (the ladies go dancing at Whitsun) on 31 March 2021. Henry also mentioned a line in Bogie's Bonnie Belle "Ae Whitsun day at Huntly toun 'twas there I did agree Wi auld Bogieside a fairmer a six-month for tae fee" but I don't see Bogie's Bonnie Belle listed in the index at the beginning of this 7 page thread. I wonder if Bogie's Bonnie Belle is mentioned as a June song, as any Whitsun song might be appropriate in either May or June of a given year. I also don't see the Whaddon Whitsun Song in the index; henry p posted that in a separate message, also on 31 March 2021 I posted re Dh'èirich mi moch madainn Chèitein on 13 Jun 21; I see admin (Geoff) has linked the two messages but left out a letter "i" in the word "dh'èirich".
