THE LARK IN THE MORNING

The lark in the morning she rises from her nest,
She mounts into the air with the dew on her breast.
’Twas down in yonder meadow I carelessly did stray,
For there’s no-one like the ploughboy in the merry month of May.

Since 1975, on the Saturday nearest to 17 May, Levellers' Day has been held in the Oxfordshire town of Burford. Levellers' Day commemorates the three Levellers, Private John Church, Corporal Perkins, and Cornet James who were executed there on 17 May 1649 following an army mutiny over pay and political demands.

THE DIGGERS’ SONG
by Gerrard Winstanley

You noble Diggers all, stand up now, stand up now,
You noble Diggers all, stand up now,
The waste land to maintain, seeing Cavaliers by name,
Your digging does maintain, and persons all defame,
Stand up now, stand up now. ,

Your houses they pull down, stand up now, stand up now, ,
Your houses they pull down, stand up now. ,
Your houses they pull down to fright your men in town, ,
But the gentry must come down, and the poor shall wear the crown. Stand up now, Diggers all.

Hal and Tow . . . we were up long before the day-o,
With provolone on rye bread, with mustard,
Hold the mayo.

Joli mois de Mai
Il était trois filles sous un pommier doux ?

Las, dit la première, je crois qu’il fait jour?

Joli mois de Mai, quand reviendras-tu ? ?

May 20, 1961 An angry mob consisting of all white people attacked a busload of "Freedom Riders" The Freedom Riders were testing the United States Supreme Court decision Boynton v. Virginia, that gave them a legal right to disregard local segregation ordinances regarding interstate transportation facilities.

ONLY FOR THREE MONTHS
Today,23rd May, is the anniversary of the landing, in 1937, of refugee children from S.S. Habana at Southampton. These children were sent for safety to Britain from war-torn Spain following the bombing of Guernika during the Spanish Civil War. “Only for Three Months “ is a song performed by Na-Mara which tells the story. Rob Garcia of Na mara is the son of Fausto Garcia, who was evacuated as a child from Bilbao in 1937 and given asylum in Britain.

Geoff, if you have time, could you make a list of all the song titles mentioned so far. I would do it but my iPad is totally inadequate for that kind of task A list would save me scanning the whole thread everytime I come across, or think of a May song.

MAY DAY DAY , written by Jean Ritchie.
Susie Glaze wrote,
Jean’s songs grew out of the old ones. When a situation came up that didn’t have an old song to go with it, well she made up a new one. Uncle Jason would say, “if you have a set of words and you want to sing ‘em, well just get you a tune and sing the tune to ‘em!” They sometimes sound like the very old family songs. As time went by, she needed to sing a new kind of song that was original and personal… Songs to express the changing world, her love for her people and her past, and her place on earth – and hope for the future.

Cold and dark the winter, in march it snows again.
Through the rains of April, spring comes stealin’ in;
Smilin’ o’er the meadow in the risin’ light of day;
Beauty is reborn again every first of May!
For when I’m walkin’ with my darlin’ on a May Day Day,
Walkin’ with my darlin’ on a May Day Day,
Oh there’s nothin’ much a doin’ and little for to say;
But oh my heart is happy on a May Day Day!
Folks are cold and distant, the world’s about to freeze,
Never has the world known harder times than these;
Suffering world forgive me and grant me just a day;
I cannot help but hope again, every first of May!
For when I’m walkin’ with my darlin’ on a May Day Day,
Walkin’ with my darlin’ on a May Day Day,
Oh there’s nothin’ much a doin’ and little for to say;
But oh my heart is happy on a May Day Day!

Recording by Jon Pickow (Jean Ritchie's youngest son).

I've mentioned a couple of times that there was a previous Mudcat discussion of May songs. I haven't found a thread specifically for June songs; a search gave me a long long list of DT songs which mention June. Even "April come she will"(in June she'll change her tune) is included.

But there are a handful of Song a day threads and I noticed, but have not yet looked at, a recent - or recently refreshed? - months of the year inclusive thread.
Jon Boden: 'A Folk Song A Day' blog-finished!!!! includes these lists, previously posted by Joe Offer in Jan 2011. There are blue clickable links on the original thread. But not all the songs selected were directly connected with the months, I think, but many are.:

the May songs:
May 1: Hail, Hail The First Of May (Dave Webber)
May 2: Hal And Tow
May 3: The Outlandish Knight
May 4: The Verdant Braes Of Skreen
May 5: Bonny Bunch Of Roses
May 6: Broomfield Hill
May 7: Death and the Lady
May 8: Gathering Rushes (Underneath Her Apron)
May 9: [Heather] Down the Moor
May 10: As I Roved Out
May 11: Searching For Lambs
May 12: My Husband’s Got No Courage In Him
May 13: Sweet Nightingale
May 14: The Gardener
May 15: Oh What a Beautiful Morning
May 16: Charming Molly
May 17: P Stands For Paddy I Suppose
May 18: Gypsy Rover
May 19: Lillibulero
May 20: Big Rock Candy Mountain
May 21: Roseville Fair (Bill Staines)
May 22: The House Carpenter

Too much to read here to be sure of not duplicating. Earlier this week I SANG as did others at a limited garden singaround. Birds were indeed cheeping merrily.
A version of Bushes and Briars I think I found in Seeds of Love.
"Through Bushes and through Briars, I lately took my way, All for to hear the small birds sing, One evening in May".

BUSHES AND BRIARS

Thank you JHW – I was surprised by your suggestion of “Bushes and Briars” because I have never before heard any reference to May (the equivalent line is usually "And the lambs to skip and play ".) I trawled through YouTube and eventually found this recording with the May reference.

I was born in May. I am delighted by that. It must be the most song celebrated month.

Last May was the sunniest on record due no doubt to climate change. As an allotment owner I had to go and water the young seedlings I planted on a regular basis. Now we have a wet May, which is good for allotment owners and bad for everyone else, apart from farmers etc.

May is such a contrast to a bleak mid-winter, made bleaker by covoid this time round. The light, the warmth, the growth in nature, the hatchlings.

May is almost gone now. What will June bring ? More flowers, more light, more heat, an equinox no doubt.

I don't see "Banks of the Roses" on the list. It is related to The Nightingale (to hear the Nightingale sing) and the Fiddlng Soldier, but this fiddler doesn't jilt the lover. Rather, she says her father wouldn't approve. versions of the Banks of the Roses are in the Digital Tradtion; it can be a June song as well but I learned:

If ever I get married, twill be in the month of May
When meadows they are green, and flowers they are gay
And me and my true love will sit and sport and play
By he lovely sweet banks of the roses.

There are also versions in which nasty Johnny is a murderer, but the ones in the DT don't mention amonth, either May or June or anything else, in the lyrics given.

The DT variant which is close to what I know is https://mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=494

Thank you Felipa , I investigated and found that "The Banks of the Roses" is often a murder ballad which doesn't mention getting married in May but below are some links where your married in May verse is sung .

And when I get married t'will be in the month of May
When the leaves they are green and the meadows they are gay
And me and me true love we'll sit and sport and play

There is at least one song listed here called "One Morning in May" . I clicked on a link, and it wasn't the song I have in mind, so I'm not sure whether or not the following song has already been proposed.

ONE MORNING IN MAY (2)

One morning in May, as I carelessly did stray
to view the green meadows, and the lambs sport and play,
in the clear morning dew, as I lay down to muse,
a fair maiden of honour appeared in my view.

Says I, “Pretty maid, how happy we could be
for it is so ordained, love, that married we should be.
Let me not see you frown, for this heart is your own.”
But as these words were spoken, sure the tears trickled down.

“Come dry up your tears. You have nothing to fear.
I have roamed through the green fields for many’s the long year.”
But as the birds sang so sweet, this young man proved his deceit,
saying, “Adieu, pretty fair maid. We shall never more meet.”

“With my snuffbox and cane, the whole world I would range,
like Venus or Diana in search of her swain.
While the moon does shine clear, I will mourn for my dear
over mountains, clear fountains, where no-one would hear.”

“And there’s one thing I know; and that before I go.
I shall never return, love, to hear your sad woe.
And there’s another thing I know; and that before I go.
That the ranger and the stranger have many’s the foe.”

Subject: when I was a young girl (One Morning in May)
From: Felipa
Date: 30 May 21 - 07:06 PM

https://secondhandsongs.com/work/142209
"This traditional ballad concerning a woman cut down in her prime due to her drinking and other "sinful" activities has been found in the eastern part of the United States. The theme is related to 'The Cowboy's Lament' and 'St. James Infirmary Blues'. Texas Gladden's version of this song was recorded by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress in 1941. Several well-known singers including Nina Simone and Barbara Dane based their performances on the Gladden recording."

ONE MORNING IN MAY (3)

When I was, a young girl I used to seek pleasure,
When I was a young girl I used to drink ale;
Right out of the alehouse and into the jailhouse,
Out of a barroom and down to my grave.

Come Papa, come Mama, and sit you down by me,
Come sit you down by me and pity my case;
My poor head is aching, my sad heart is breaking,
My body's salivated and I'm bound to die.

Go send for the preacher to come and pray for me;
Go send for the doctor to heal up my wounds;
My poor head is aching, my sad heart is breaking,
My body's salivated, and Hell is my doom.

I want four young ladies to bear up my coffin,
I want three young maidens to carry me on,
And each of them carry a bunch of wild roses,
To lay on my body as I pass along.

One morning, one morning, one morning in May,
I spied this young lady all clad in white linen,
All clad in white linen and cold as the clay.

From folkradio 1 May 2017; Lisa Knapp seems to have a fascination with May: in 2012 she released Hunt The Hare: A Branch Of May.

Accordingly, Till April Is Dead is made up of equal parts darkness and light. It is clear from the first sounds of opener The Night Before May Day that this is not your average folk album. The second track, Till April Is Dead, experiments even further. Staines Morris delves further into the darker and stranger traditions of May Day celebration. Although only brief and to all intents slight, May Garland might be the album’s centrepiece.

Bedfordshire May Day Carol takes a more traditional approach. Don’t You Go A Rushing Maids In May is perhaps the album’s simplest and prettiest song. Pleasant Month Of May, a song from the Copper family of Sussex, takes a similar tack, its raunchy meaning scarcely hidden even before the percussive, ecstatic conclusion. The recordings of birdsong and themes of unity that begin the album’s final song, Padstow May Song, neatly bring the album full circle,

Though April showers may come your way,

It's raining violets.

FIRST OF MAY HORNPIPE

I pressed send by accident
The First of May hornpipe does have several other names
info from Dick Glasgow's video notes
"The hornpipe was published around 1826 in Scotland in Anderson's Fifty New Scottish and Irish Reels and Hornpipes under the title 'Lady Harrington's Reel'.
"The melody was employed as the vehicle for the song 'The Little Skillet Pot'/'Colcannon', composed by 78 rpm-era singer and uilleann piper Shaun O'Nolan."

tune sheets:
https://tunearch.org/wiki/First_of_May_(1)

Does the Colcannon song qualify as a May song if sung to the tune of the First of May? (I think that would be stretching it)

There are so many May songs that we should have twice as many singarounds in the month of May as we have in any other month. '

I'm thinking of a thread just for songs in Scottish Gaelic with the word Cèitean (May) in them. Or the alternatives, Maigh (a' Mhaigh) or Bealtainn . Bealtainn is the Celtic May day, but in Irish Bealtaine is also the modern name for the month of May.

THOIR MO SHORAIDH THAR GHUNANIDH
Thoir Mo Shoraidh Thar Ghunanidh has the lines

Far an cluinnear a' chuthag
Air gach bruthach ro Bhealltainn.
Rachel Walker singing Thoir Mo Shoraidh Thar Ghunnaidh

(Where the cuckoo is heard On every brae before the feast of Beltane (in May)

THIG AN SMEORACH A’S T- EARRACH
Thig An Smeòrach As t-Earrach
Thig an smeòrach a's t-Earrach        The thrush will come in spring
Thig a' chuthag 's a'Chèitinn        The cuckoo will come in May
Bi gach eun anns a'choille        And every bird in the forest
Cumail coinneamh le chèile        Will meet together

Ishbel Macaskill singing Thig an Smeòrach as t-Earrach

MO BHEANNACHD DHAN BHAILLIDH UR
Mo Bheannachd dhan Bhaillidh Úr

'S fhuair thu i 'n Cèitean a h-òig'.
You won her in the May of her youth

Mo Bheannachd dhan Bhaillidh Úr sung by Julie Fowlis but without the line about an Cèitean

Tha mo Ghaol air Ard a' Chuan is already listed. I'm sure there are many more!
