Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of May ie: (A) Any songs with May in the title (B) Any songs with a May date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in May even if the lyrics do not actually say so.
It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and also more sources of information about them.

Below is an alphabetical index of the titles collected in this thread until the end of April 2022. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be jumped to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occurs. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “POST” button to jump to the end of the thread. I shall sometimes rearrange “ late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked. When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below. Regards, GeoffLawes

So many songs have lines like "in the merry month of May"; Barbara Allen is one.

THE OLD REBEL FLAG IN THE REAR
The Old Rebel Flag In The Rear is a poem by Henry Lawson, who gave it the subtitle, "A May-Day Song". It was set to music by Chris Kempster, but I couldn't find a recording of that setting online so you'll have to settle for the setting I did find. Here's Lawson's original version (what people actually sing is a much shorter version):

The Old Rebel Flag in the Rear
A May-Day Song

Henry Lawson, 1892

Whenever the march of oppression
Reduces a land to despair,
No matter how mighty the victors,
The flag of Rebellion is there.
The might of coercion may triumph,
And Freedom be laid on her bier —
Yet over the graves of the conquered there waves
That Old Rebel Flag in the Rear

A king may be great in a country
That cheers when a monarch is crown'd
But still, in his capital city,
The flag of the rebel is found.
A people may boast a Republic,
Where Liberty dies in a year;
But close on their flag comes that old stubborn rag,
The Old Rebel Flag in the Rear

We sing of the Queen of England,
Her banner that flaunts in the van,
Yet out from the slums of her capital comes
That vengeful red banner of man!
Lift up the proud Union of England,
And bear it along with a cheer,
But England! take care in your triumph, for there
Is the Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.

There's the great cruel Eagle of Russia,
Where thousands are sunk in despair,
And the hand of the tyrant is mighty,
But the flag of rebellion is there!
There's the bloodthirsty flag of the Kaiser,
A monarch whom nations can fear,
But William will pause ere he marches, because
Of the Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.

There's the Red, White and Blue of the Frenchmen,
Where soldiers of Freedom are true,
But lo! from the rear comes a banner,
Whose skirts lack the white and the blue!
There's the flag of a boastful republic,
A country where freedom is dear —
But still, in the States there's an army that waits
'Neath the Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.

There's a new mongrel flag in Australia,
And the "Banner of Britain" is here,
But, to break from the past, we are gathering fast
'Neath the Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.
There are men in the ranks who are traitors,
And men who will falter and fear,
Yet on thro' the arch of the morning we march
'Neath the Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.

Some men, for the sake of their conscience,
Will join and be true in the strife,
And some for the sake of a moment to break
The terrible dullness of life!
They march 'neath the flag of the rebels,
With lives overburden'd and drear,
And fling them away on a terrible day
'Neath the Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.

A spirit calls out of the future,
And bids us to strike in our youth —
And the voice of to-day is appealing
For Liberty, Justice, and Truth;
And the blood that was shed by old rebels,
For rights that shall ever be dear,
Drips down from the red of the flag overhead,
Of the Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.

Oh! brothers of mine and of mankind!
The banner I sing of is red
With life-blood of men who were foemen
To wrong, and oppression, and dread.
Then march 'neath the flag of the rebels,
The red days of battle are near,
Let your feet never lag as you march 'neath the flag,
'Neath the Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.

Perhaps there'll be no reformation,
But Oh! for a moment to rise
And ride on the storm of rebellion,
And strike at the things that I hate and despise!
When Progress is stayed by a red barricade,
And down in the city we hear
The roll of a hymn of defiance
That ends in a desperate cheer,
And on, for a day they'll remember,
Comes the Old Rebel Flag from the Rear.

It rose from the birth of the lords of the earth,
That Old Rebel Flag in the Rear;
The rebels are bred by the tyrants who dread
That Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.
'Twill never be furl'd while there's wrong in the world,
It never will fall till there's Justice for all,
THAT OLD REBEL FLAG IN THE REAR!

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

This is the shorter version, as Chris arranged it:

Whenever the march of oppression
Reduces a land to despair,
No matter how mighty the victors,
The flag of Rebellion is there.
A spirit calls out of the future,
And bids us to strike in our youth —
And the voice of to-day is appealing
For Liberty, Justice, and Truth;
There are men in the ranks who are traitors,
And men who will falter and fear,
Yet on thro' the arch of the morning we march
'Neath the Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.

Chorus (after each verse):
'Twill never be furl'd while there's wrong in the world,
It never will fall till there's Justice for all,
That old rebel flag, that old rebel flag, that old rebel flag in the rear!

There's the Red, White and Blue of the Frenchmen,
Where soldiers of Freedom are true,
But lo! from the rear comes a banner,
Whose skirts lack the white and the blue!
There's the flag of a boastful republic,
A country where freedom is dear —
But still, in the States there's an army that waits
'Neath the Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.
There's a new mongrel flag in Australia,
And the "Banner of Britain" is here,
But, to break from the past, we are gathering fast
'Neath the Old Rebel Flag in the Rear.

There's the great cruel Eagle of Russia,

Her banner that flaunts in the van,

That vengeful red banner of man!

Streets of Forbes mentions the fifth of May. Copy-pasted from the DT (I made a few small changes to bring it closer into line with what's in Ron Edwards' book, Great Australian Folk Songs):

STREETS OF FORBES

Come all of you Lachlan men and a terrible tale I'll tell
Concerning of a bushranger who in misfortune fell
His name it was Ben Hall, a man of high renown
He was hunted from a station and like a dog shot down

Three years he roamed the roads and he showed the traps some fun
A thousand pounds was on his head with Gilbert and John Dunn
Then parted from his comrades, the outlaw did agree
To give away bushranging and to cross the raging sea

Ben went to Goobang Creek and that was his downfall
Oh riddled like a sieve was valiant Ben Hall
It was early in the morning upon the fifth of May
That the seven Police surrounded him as in his sleep he lay

Bill Dargin he was chosen to shoot the outlaw dead
The others fired madly as if they were afraid
Then rolled him in his blanket and they tied him to his prad
And they dragged him through the streets of Forbes to show the prize
they had.

Allan Sherman's parody of Down By The Riverside:

When you go to the delicatessen store,
Don't buy the liverwurst.
Don't buy the liverwurst.
Don't buy the liverwurst.
I repeat what I just said before,
Don't buy the liverwurst.
Don't buy the liverwurst.

Oh buy the corned beef if you must,
The pickled herring you can trust,
And the lox puts you in orbit AOK.
But that big hunk of liverwurst
Has been there since October First,
And today is the Twenty-Third of May.

So when you go to the delicatessen store,
Don't buy the liverwurst.
Don't buy the liverwurst.
Don't buy the liverwurst.
It'll make your insides awful sore.
Don't buy the liverwurst.
Don't buy the liverwurst.

I know I sent you one May song (The Drunken Driver by Ralph Stanley, which I'll let you type up as you wish) but since then I've found two more:

A version of "The Two Sisters" titled "O the Wind and Rain" by Laurie Lewis opens: "Early one morning in the month of May, O the wind and rain." Listen here

The album version of the song "The Federal Soldier" by Gandydancer is not online, but a live recording from 2010 can be heard here. The song opens "One morning, one morning, one morning in May / I heard a young soldier lamenting and say"

Thanks to cnd for the following pm message

I know you're not quite to May yet, but I was listening to some music the other day and came across a May song that would be good for your lists once you get there.

I'm still trying to find out who wrote this. It was part of "Sticks and Bells", first aired on Radio Oxford and was compiled by Steve Heap, but he could not recall where it came from.

THE FIRST OF MAY.

My Granny said the other night, "Next Monday is the day
To mark the ending of the old, it is the first of May."
"Now what's so special." we all cried, "Do we get a day off school ?
Do we go for a bike ride down our lane, or a trip to the swimming pool ?"
Well Granny sat us quietly down and opened her book to read.
"You kids are losing heritage to spaceships, telly and speed.
If only for one minute a day you'd just sit down and try
To think about the days of old. Don't let tradition die."

CH. Like Easter eggs and Bonfire Night and Christmas and New Year,
Our Maypole means so much to us, so give us a rousing cheer.

"When I was younger and lived at home, my brothers and sisters and me
Would work for hours through April showers with ribbons and paint, you see.
All the colours we could find and trim them up so neat
That when the first of May came round we'd the best pole in our street.
The morning of the first of May was special to us all.
We'd dance around the Maypole and on our friends we'd call.
We'd knock on doors and sing our songs with garlands and banners and chains,
And pick up the pennies that folks threw down to drive off the April rains."

Her words put new life in our blood, we'd two days left to go.
Johnny found a wooden pole and painted it for show,
And Susie cut the ribbons up, and Gran taught us the song,
And when the first of May came round we'd do it, right or wrong.
We danced 'til nine o'clock that morn and then set off for school.
We told the teachers what we'd done and I felt a proper fool,
But they were very pleased with us and we showed the class the way
To dance around the Maypole and welcome in the May.

The Bee-Gees "First Of May"

When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall,
we used to love while others used to play.
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by,
some one else moved in from far away.

[chorus]
Now we are tall, and Christmas trees are small,
and you don't ask the time of day.
But you and I, our love will never die,
but guess we'll cry come first of May.

The apple tree that grew for you and me,
I watched the apples falling one by one.
And I recall the moment of them all,
the day I kissed your cheek and you were mine.

[chorus]

When I was small, and Christmas trees were tall,
do do do do do do do do do...
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by,
some one else moved in from far away.

Wasn't I pretty when I entered Cork City

there is a rhyme we used to sing as kids

Here we go gathering nuts in May, nuts in May, nuts in May.
Here we go gathering nuts in May, on a cold and frosty morning.

Looking further, I found out that it should have been 'knots of May' which makes more sense as there are knots of flowers on Hawthorn trees which are also referred to as May trees, and the flowers as May flowers.

Whitsun can fall as early as May 10th and as late as June 13th.

Austin John Marshall wrote Whitsun Dance LADIES GO DANCING AT WHITSUN to the tune of The Week Before Easter. (Whitsun is actually the seventh Sunday after Easter.)

Belle Stewart sings
BOGIE’S BONNIE BELLE;

Those examples of Barbara Allen (Child Ballad #84) at the end of the post were not placed there by me, but added anonymously by someone on the Mudcat editing team. They are getting intrusive, even added a title - not of my choice - to lyrics I wrote and posted. In this case, the editor should have identified him/her-self as having supplimented the post.

Yes, I learned the song in my schooldays from recordings by Joan Baez and Pete Seeger, but my first choice for an example would be Jean Ritchie recording as an example

often the merry month of May is in the second verse rather than at the beginning
Clifton Hicks (with banjo)
Tom Rush (lush guitar playing)

Note the words of the broadsheet used to illustrate the Tom Rush video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSX6Ts-OBXM (clickable link above).
Sarah Makem sang a version in which the story is placed at Michaelmas time, but the merry month of May is a more common setting for the story. Maybe not in Ireland; Elizabeth Cronin (recorded by Jean Ritchie on a song-collecting trip) just sang early, early in the spring. Tom Lenihan puts the song in the first person and sets it in Ireland "In Dublin town I was brought up
As Limerick being my dwelling;" No time of year is mentioned, he courted Barbara "For twelve long months."

WHADDON WHITSON SONG

Now Whitsuntide is come you very well do know;
Come, serve the Lord we must before we do go;
Come, serve him truly with all your mind and heart,
And then from heaven your soul shall never depart.

How do you know how long we have to live?
For when we die, O then what would we give
For to being sure of having our resting place,
Since we have run our sinful wretched race?

Now we may bring you the royal branch of oak;
God bless our king and queen and all the royal folk;
God bless our king and queen and all this world beside,
Then the Lord he will send us all a merry Whitsuntide.

http://www.whaddon.org/whitsun-files/Whitsun_article.html

The above article says" the Whaddon Whitsun Song was recorded by the folk group the Young Tradition on their album So Cheerfully Round in 1967. It was called "The Whitsuntide Carol" and is somewhat different from the version noted by Wortley, although clearly arranged from the same song by the members of the group."

BLUEBELL POLKA.... Tune can be found on Youtube.

1. Pickin' a bluebell in the merry month of May,
And suddenly I saw him strolling on his way,
Pickin' a bluebell just the same as I was too;
I thought I could be happy with a boy like you.

2. And as he turned and smiled at me my heart stood still,
I never knew a smile could give me such a thrill.
He was a handsome laddie and he looked so good,
I promised that I'd meet him in the bluebell wood.

3. Half past seven by the old oak tree,
I was waiting, anticipating
What could happen to a girl like me
When he came along...

4. Pickin' a bluebell in the merry month of May
And suddenly I saw him strolling on his way,
Pickin' a bluebell just the same as I was too,
I thought I could be happy with a boy like you.

5. He looked wonderful. Oh! So wonderful.
How was I to see he would make a fool of me?
Two dark flashing eyes, looked like paradise;
My heart flickered like a flame.

6. What was I to do? Met my Waterloo.
There I stood for him, waiting in the wood for him.
I'm confessin' I learned my lesson,
And now I'll never be the same.

7. Pickin' a bluebell in the merry month of May
Is something I'll remember when I'm old and grey,
And if I live to ninety-two I know darned well
I never want to see another Scots bluebell.

My song "May Morning".
https://annelister.bandcamp.com/track/may-morning

MAY MORNING
Did you hear the sun on a bright may morning
Did you hear the sun when he played at dawn
Did you hear the sun on a bright may morning
Call down a blessing on the growing corn ?

And where were you as the dawn was breaking
Were you still asleep in bed ?
With the world all dancing to the pipes of the sun
And a song of gold in every head.

You live in the city all wrapped in concrete
With nothing but pavements beneath your feet
How can you hear the world as it's turning
Or dance to the rhythm of the changing beat ?

Here's a garland for the lady in every hedgerow
Here's a song for the sun and a dance for the moon
Here's a laugh for the living and a prayer for the dying
And a wish for the world to all sing in tune.

You have to wait for it, it's the very last word in this song.

WHEN YOU ARE OLD AND GRAY

words and music by Tom Lehrer
(copy-pasted from https://tomlehrersongs.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/when-you-are-old-and-gray.pdf)

Since I still appreciate you,
Let's find love while we may.,
Because I know I'll hate you
When you are old and gray.
So say you love me here and now,
I'll make the most of that.
Say you love and trust me,
For I know you'll disgust me
When you're old and getting fat.

An awful debility,
A lessened utility,
A loss of mobility
Is a strong possibility.
In all probability
I'll lose my virility
And you your fertility
And desirability,
And this liability
Of total sterility
Will lead to hostility
And a sense of futility,
So let's act with agility
While we still have facility,
For we'll soon reach senility
And lose the ability.

Your teeth will start to go, dear,
Your waist will start to spread.
In twenty years or so, dear,
I'll wish that you were dead.
I'll never love you then at all
The way I do today.
So please remember,
When I leave in December,
I told you so in May.

The Swinton May song posted by Anahata is the new Swinton May song. The older one was recorded by Brass Monkey and the Watersons. Both can be found in Chambers book of Days and are traditionally sung during April - Drawing near to the merry month of May. I am from Swinton, which was, when written up in Chambers, a village in the county of Lancashire.
