A statement from Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

The Duke was married to Queen Elizabeth II for more than 70 years and became the longest-serving consort in British history.

Very sad.

We send our condolences to Her Majesty The Queen, like I know you are all going to.

I've been called a sourpuss for suggesting that there are thousands of other people who also died who deserve our recognition at least as much as the Prince. He gets the recognition because of an accident of birth. Others deserve it because of what they have done to make the world a better place. Teachers, farmers, nurses, and so on.

I would not wish ill on anyone and I would happily send my condolonces to those who loved him if I knew any of them well enough.

However, I did not know him, he made no difference to my life or my family at all and, as has been pointed out, this is only considered newsworthy because of an accident of birth.

An accident of his wife's birth, maybe - or good luck in that Elizabeth (accidentally?) fell in love with him, which was probably not because he was a distant cousin.

Yes he was. He was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark. He was born Royal. This placed in him in the position to marry the future queen of England. Even if he had not married Lizzie he would still have been Royal.

The gentleman lived long and well, in the glare of the public eye. He served his country and participated in so many events of note that demanded intelligence and courage; as well as countless ceremonies and attendances that must have required even more personal power to look awake and interested. That adds up to hero in my book. May his loved ones find comfort. God save England!

The World Wildlife Fund and World Wildlife Foundation would not have existed, or have been so successful without him.

He was Patron or associated in some significant way in over 780 Charities.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme was his idea and it has benefited millions of youngsters [Some 7 million+] not only in the UK but across the world.

Just read the following statistic regarding the Duke of Edinburgh. During the course of his life between 1952 and 2017 [65 years] he carried out 22,219 SOLO engagements - I make that one every day of the year continuously for 61 years, and those were solo engagements they did not include the many thousands carried out when he accompanied the Queen. Loads commenting negatively about the man here would not be capable of walking 100 yards in his shoes, let alone a mile.

Only met him the once - I'll never forget it.

Todays obit programmes (in place of everything else) state he was ahead of many in condemning man made climate change etc. If I'd tried to push that in 1981 no-one would have noticed. The only Prince Philip free zone I found on TV today was the Russian news channel.
Even Aljazeera News was festooned with fawning royal coverage.

Though the wife says the Russians relented and ran a short report while I was upstairs on the toilet...

So have the bookies made or lost more money on Phillip not reaching 100...???

As soon as I saw the report of Philip's death, I knew certain facets of our community would go bonkers. Our obituary threads always start out in the music section, and then the moderators move the non-music obituaries to the "BS" section when it's appropriate. I realize that there will be a number of negative comments about him, but I hope they won't smother the opportunity to discuss him intelligently.

I'm one of those people who tends to think that nobody can be all bad, which makes me anathema on the Internet to start off with. But hear me out. It seems to me that the Royal Family has been largely irrelevant to UK government since World War II. Can anybody tell me anything the Royal Family has done since then, that has had any effect whatsoever on the politics of the UK? But hey, they remain great tourist attractions. They cost a lot of money and live an extravagant lifestyle, but where would Great Britain be without all that royal stuff? I'm rather cynical about royalty compared to many Americans, But even I thought it was cool when I went to the Highland Games at Braemar and saw Philip and Elizabeth and Charles and what's-her-name. Heck, besides seeing the back of the head of Rosalie Carter (wife of Jimmy), they're the only famous people I have ever seen in my life without having to pay for concert tickets.

So, I don't care a whit for the Royal Family, but they're a nice tourist attraction and they give the tabloids a lot to talk about. That sells tabloid newspapers and stimulates the economy, so why not? It's also good for fanzines here in the US, so all the better.

So, Prince Philip was a person who was born, lived, and died. He did some good stuff, and some not-so-good stuff. But he seemed like a real person, not larger-than-life like many of the Royals. He certainly wasn't infallible, and made no effort to pretend to infallibility. So, maybe that's a good thing. He was the most Ordinary of Royal Persons. That seems to be a very good thing.

No, Maggie is deleting posts because of unacceptable behaviour like inappropriate language and racist language.

Build a bridge and get over it. That's what moderators do, although I expect that most of the moderators here can think of better things to do than keeping some folks in line who should know how to behave in civilised society.

Looking at the bigger picture, I can see a whole lot more politicians and people in power who have had a worse effect on the world than Prince Philip. I can also see that he achieved a lot of good in the world, despite his gaffs now and then.

May he rest in peace after a long life.

I (and most moderators) usually delete all of the posts that discuss moderators and moderation. We have a lot of trouble with the UK threads, especially on topics like royalty. And posts that challenge "I dare you not to delete this" are usually the first to go. So I've deleted several posts that had content but also discussion of moderation.

In the music posts there are a lot of occasions when the actual words are very racist, sexist, or hurtful, but are necessary for context and examination of the topics. We aren't particularly prudish here at Mudcat, a lot of stuff flows onto these pages that is rude but left alone. But when these UK threads get going and people come in to characterize the recently departed with the most scathing, nasty, irreverent, or distasteful terms, just because they can, then you're crossing a line that is unacceptable. If you want to talk like that on Facebook or Twitter, see what happens. Facebook jail, or Twitter shutdown; people unfriend you, stalk you, or start fighting. Mudcat is very generous with what is allowed, but in an obituary thread this kind of shit just doesn't fly. Go talk about it somewhere else if you want to be that nasty.

I've been listening to the BBC radio and am watching BBC television going in depth into the life of Prince Philip. They may be pulling back on some things, but they are not pulling back on various gaffes of the man.

I appreciate several things here:

The mods being up front with their personal prejudices and problems in doing their jobs here.

At this point I'm appreciating the man that Prince Philip was. He seems to have been 'honestly' outspoken in that whether or not one liked what he said, one could generally believe it. He was definitely in harm's way in World War 2. He was in the Royal Navy and participated in the Battle of Cape Matapan and was mentioned in dispatches. He lived a very long time after that and I'm sure he did many things out of a sense of duty, or as one might prosaically say, doing his job.

He satisfies the definition of 'hero' and more importantly, a man, or as one would say in my family, a mensch.

I find it absolutely fascinating that our UK members have widely disparate views and are unafraid to express them. The UK is imperfect and flagrant and utterly human. We see hundreds of years of people 'not getting on very well together' yet carrying on.

A story about Prince Philip, who died today at 99. The weekend of the Kennedy assassination, he flew to Washington for the funeral. At the White House on Sunday, Nov. 24, 1963, Jacqueline Kennedy was looking for John Jr. and opened the door to his playroom. There she found the Prince sprawled on the floor, playing and laughing with the murdered president's son. Days from his 3d birthday, John had said earlier that he "didn't have anybody to play with" (also: "where's Daddy?") and her Majesty's husband decided that he would entertain the boy. RIP

Prince Philip was good at stuff like that.

In 1976, when he escorted the Queen to Canada for the Montreal Olympics, they stopped first at Halifax, where I was then serving at the fleet hospital. Like every other unit of the Canadian Forces Medical Service, Stadacona Hospital was stripped down to a skeleton crew to staff the Olympic Band-Aid Team, and I found myself on a relentless cycle of night shifts, for which I required a constant supply of reading material.

So I came out of the Halifax Public Library with a fresh load to find Spring Garden Road barricaded and a flag-waving throng on the sidewalk. Not clued in, I approached the cop holding down the intersection of Brunswick Street. Just as I reached him, he snapped to attention and saluted, so I dropped my bag of books and did the same. The royal motorcade was half a block away.

We were a conspicuous pair, that cop and I. He wore the traditional dress uniform of Canadian police, which looks like the “patrol blues” of the pre-war Militia. I wore white hospital workdress, with a double row of brass buttons on the bodice, and a green CF felt hat.

When the Queen’s car reached us, the Duke stuck his head out the window and frankly stared. Then he returned the salute. As the car passed, the salute turned into a “thumbs-up” wave.
