Any UK Mudcatters interested in a weekend of singing/playing or just listening, there is going to be a Folk weekend at Tanners Hatch Youth Hostel on Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th of March. This is a weekend for "Floor Singers" and there will be no booked guests as such but some good local Folkies will be coming along. It will be very informal and the atmosphere will be very good.(Helped by an open log fire and gas lighting) Note! this is a very isolated building set in the Surrey Hills and will require a walk of about twenty minutes as the nearest road/carpark is about one mile from the the building. It is a very old building and has been a Youth Hostel since 1946. It has beds for 25 people and ample camping space. For more information please contact the warden at Tanners Hatch Youth, off Ranmore Road, Dorking, Surrey RH5 6BE Telephone/Fax 01306 877964 or E-mail:tanners@yha.org.uk

For more information about about the YHA in general see http://www.yha.org.uk I hope this generates some interest as it would be nice to meet other UK Mudcatters. On a more mundane note this is a self catering Hostel so please be sure to bring all the food you might need (Full use of the Hostel kitchen is provided) Also for those that might not know you can drink alcohol at Youth Hostels but you have to bring your own. As I said in the previous message this is a "Folk" weekend but as far as I am concerned also includes Blues, Jazz or even poems etc. If you want to contact me as well or instead of the warden feel free to leave a message on this thread or phone me on 01306 711564 All the best Bob Merrett

Although it's a long way, I might be interested in going. Anybody living between Mid Wales and Surrey who might want a lift? I'm more likely to go if I'm not on my own.

Dear Polesden I would be interested, I live in London so it would not be difficult for me to get to. Sounds really good. I will be calling you soon.

In reply to a question from TerriM the hostel opens at 5:00pm on Friday evening and what generally happens is that people turn up as and when during the evening, cook a meal, chat and we start when we feel enough people have turned up, usually between 8::00 and 9:00.It has been known for a session to go on until someone notices the sun rising the following morning! How might people feel if I cooked 2 big pots of curry for everyone that night(one veg. and one meat)? Just an idea! Cheers Bob

Emmie, how about little extra's like popadoms, nan, mango chutney etc. I thought I would use lamb for the meat curry as beef is still a no no for some people.By the way Emmie, what part of London do you live, I used to live in various parts of south London, Raynes park, Wimbledon, Balham and Tooting, do you go to any local Folk clubs or any of the big festivals such as Sidmouth, Towersey, Whitby etc. Its always interesting to know what other folkies do. Cheers Bob

Bloody hell chaps-sounds like great fun but I shall be in Portugal. I would like to know how this came about though, because I can think of some great Youth Hostelling venues (Boggle Hole near Whitby for example)which would be perfect (Martin Carthy lives up the road so perhaps he could drop in too!) Is this a special arrangement with the YHA-do they charge etc???? Have a wonderful time. and don't overdo the curry - it could ruin the dormitory arrangements!

We're very interested in coming - do you reckon its feasible to get the train & then cycle in? Is it just overnight on the Friday then go away again on the Saturday or is it both nights? There are three of us - which includes our daughter: Is it OK to bring 8-yr old (she does participate in singarounds locally & doesn't expect or require kid-oriented stuff)? We can bring our tent if the beds are all taken. How do we book?

Kris

To KingBrilliant, yes it is possible to get a train and then cycle in, many many people do it. The hostel is located on the edge of Ranmore Common which is very big, hundreds of acres and also has designated offroad cycleways.Boxhill station is where you need to get to and then it is about a 2 mile cycle ride. The Folk is on BOTH nights (Friday and Saturday) Yes children are welcome, no problem there and for booking please see the start of this thread where you will full details of how to book, phone fax, E-mail etc. Hope this all helps, any problems please feel free to phone me on 01306 711564 or anyone else for that matter Cheers Bob Merrett

This sounds fun. Doubt if I can make it that weekend - but there should be a few more out there who might.

refresh....

I'm just about to make a booking via the email address supplied at the top (if its not all full up - in which case I should have got my * in gear earlier...). Just wondered who else is going? I think it sounds brilliant, especially since I came across another thread on the subject of Tanner's hatch (by searching for singaround). Sounds like a great place & will be a great opportunity for people to meet up.

Polesden, are there still places? Any latest details?

Kris

All the best Bob Merrett

Change of plan. We won't be coming to Tanners Hatch because we've just found out about a more local folk weekend that week (which means we can nip home & walk the dog). I hope it goes well & that you will post a full report afterwards. Thanks for the info tho' & have a good time.

Kris
