DOBBIN’S FLOWERY VALE

As I roved out one evening fair in the pleasant month of June,
The trees they were all in fragrant shade, the flowers all in their bloom;
Down by yon grove as I did roam, no curse did me assail,
When a pair I espied by a riverside in Dobbin's flowery vale.

SONGS BY JOHN WESLEY
17 June On this date in 1703, the founder of Methodism, John Wesley, was born, the 15th of 19 children of a clergyman. John and Charles Wesley have almost 500 hymns attributed to them. However, the brothers agreed not to indicate individual authorship. While the majority of the hymns may have been written by Charles, John was responsible for the translations from the German.

In 1740 they published a volume of Hymns and Sacred Poems that included one by Charles titled “For the Anniversary Day of One’s Conversion”, an eighteen-stanza hymn. In 1753 John Wesley published an abridged form of this hymn that started with stanza 7. This shortened version quickly became a favourite among Methodists, leading to its placement as the first hymn in the 1780 Collection of Hymns for the People Called Methodists. Proceedings of the Charles Wesley Society 17 (2013)

O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4O9kw3cILpg&t=9s Tune; Lyngham extended, a fuguing tune by Thomas Jarman (b. Clipston, Northamptonshire, England, 1776; d. Clipston, 1862), published in his Sacred Music (around 1803). Jarman was a tailor by vocation, but he much preferred his musical avocation. He composed many hymn tunes, which were published in seventeen collections, including The Northamptonshire Harmony (1826), as well as in The Wesleyan Methodist periodical. O for a thousand tongues

18 June 1984 The Battle of Orgreave continued

Harry Stone - HEARTS OF COAL

Forty years of coal-dust
Is a lot of pain to carry
It made a cripple out of Harry
But his family came and took up his tools

And they faced the Orgreave cavalry
While the world looked on and wondered
Their right to work was plundered
By the statesman-ship of fools

IRISH BALLAD   (Joyce Elaine Eilers)

Irish Ballad
A rage of Scarlet Fever started down in the South
And Kansas wasn't far away
And Patrick O'Leary was buried in June
Near the rose that he planted in May.
But his dreams were remembered in the heart of his love,
His Molly so far, far away.

MACK’REL UP THE WALL
Now it’s fishing fever times
People run with rod and line
It’s out of May and into June
There’s mack’rel up the wall

A curious song about the annual mackerel run that used to occur in Plymouth, UK. It is part of local oral history that each summer large mackerel shoals arrived in the nearby coves. Someone would shout, “Mackerel up the wall”. Once the alarm was raised, all the townspeople would rush out of their houses and down to the water’s edge where whole families would fish for their supper. The supply was so plentiful, you were able to fish with just ‘sticks, string and old bent pins’

Lyrics on Singing Histories: Plymouth from EFDSS
https://media.efdss.org/resourcebank/docs/EFDSS_Education_RecentProjects_SingingHistoriesPlymouth.pdf

I tried to find a recording of the song on-line but had no luck. ??

ALL ON A ROSY MORN OF JUNE  -   Daniel Hester     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqMoJ8rkLzk

All on a rosy morn of June,
When farmers make their hay,
Down by yon bonny woodland green
A milking maid did stray;

And oh, but she was sweet and fair,
The flower of all the vale;
In her hand a wild white rose she bare,
And on her head a pail.

ROSE IN JUNE. or Love in June.
(Via Bob Copper & Alfred Williams)
I’ll harness my horses & follow the plough
While darling Miss Catherine is milking her cow.

Chorus
So let it come early late or soon
I will enjoy my love in June.

Oh love I will carry thy sweet milking pail
Oh love I will kiss you at every stile.

Oh the roses are red & the violets are blue
Carnations are sweet love & so are you.

‘Twas Down in the valley, the valley so sweet
I will pick some plain roses to keep my love sweet.

Oh I’ll go and cut down that old myrtle tree
And build up a bower for my Catherine and me.

Tim Radford (I recorded on my CD - Home From Home)

Dana Lyons wrote and recorded JUNE IS A COMING, available at https://youtu.be/1ez1DOKchD0

Lots of months get mentioned in this song, set in Seattle. The first stanza goes,

The Fall is the sunniest time of the year
And the mountains are clear every day,
But November it brings home the clouds
And the rain once again,
December is many warm nights by the fire
Reading stories and sipping some beer,
With the days growing longer,
The end of the winter seems near.

The 2nd stanza mentions March. We finally get to June in the 3rd stanza:

June is a coming, the salmon are running
And I've got to be on my way,
I don't want to leave you my darling
But there's so many more debts to pay,
They say that the catch will be bigger this year
And we'll all come home rich in the end,
I don't want to leave you my darling,
But the nets will be loaded by dawn,
June is a coming and I must be rolling along.
