Rescuing "The Reluctant Mariner" Written by Keith Rule (of Pig’s Ear) This is too good a song to get lost in the rush of contemporary events. During this past Covid year, I have been in shanty sessions multiple times every week and in all that many hundred of hours I have not yet heard anyone do this song. 'Tis a shame. It has a nice melody and chorus that sounds old and traditional, but this first appeared in Pig;s Ear CD Good Company in 2002 and to date, not a single cover on YouTube.

A cautionary tale to debunk romantic notions about the days of
wooden walled sailing ships. Pig’s Ear was a Rule family folk group in the Kent/Sussex/Surrey UK area from the late 1980s to 2011.

The RELUCTANT MARINER
(Keith Rule)

1. When I set off to be a sailor
Oh, I thought I was gonna see the world
So I joined Her Majesty’s Navy
and went out with me sails unfurled
But I found meself tossed upon the ocean
with a most appalling case of mal-de-mer
From the pitch 'n yaw 'n rock 'n rollin' motion,
And that’s before we travelled anywhere

‘Cause out on the ocean, it’s a terrible place to be
Where all there is to look at for miles and miles around
is a great big ‘orrible sea.

2. Oh, we crossed the Bay of Biscay to Gibraltar.
And spent a year or two a-cruisin’ ‘round the Med.
And most of the time I was sea-sick.
For the rest I just wished that I was dead.
Well, we fought the Dutch, the Spanish and the Frenchies
Along with any other foe who crossed our path
And we never ever seemed ran short of adversaries
‘Til the day we were homeward bound at last
‘Cause out on the ocean, it’s a terrible place to be
Where all there is to look at for miles and miles around
is a great big horrible sea.

3. Back on shore I thought me rovin’ days were over
Just as soon as some employment could be found
But I got drunk and was press-ganged to a whaler
And so for Greenland’s icy waters I was bound
And for three years I helped to hunt Leviathans
Until our holding tanks were full of stinking oil.
I was frightened, frozen, frazzled, sick and tired some
(And) exhausted from the bloody sweat and toil

‘Cause out on the ocean, it’s a terrible place to be
Where all there is to look at for miles and miles around
is a great big horrible sea.

4. Oh, I never understood quite how it happened
But I always seemed to wind up on some boat
Or more likely on a creaking pile of timbers
Which manages somehow to stay afloat
I’ve been ‘round the Cape of Good Hope in a Force Ten
Oh, I sailed the seven seas and ‘round the Horn
Cause I went sailing ‘round the world, and come sailing back again
Mostly wishing that I never had been born

‘Cause out on the ocean, it’s a terrible place to be
Where all there is to look at for miles and miles around
is a great big horrible sea.

5. Back on shore once more and running short of finance
I was starved, in debt and wondering what to do
When this fella with an eye patch and a parrot
(He) waved a treasure map and said he needed crew
Oh, he told us he was bound out for the Spice Isles
Just as fast as his old wooden leg could stray
He put his hook upon me shoulder with a nice smile
Then looked offended when I screamed and ran away

‘Cause out on the ocean, it’s a terrible place to be
Where all there is to look at for miles and miles around
is a great big horrible sea.
