Oh, Mary, thanks for the link. That must be heartbreaking! Is there no one who might have a copy of his files?

Mick, sorry for such a horrible thing happening. Good luck on recovery what you can.

All the best,

Mick, sympathy etc. That's a horrible thing to happen. I wish you the best in whatever you can do to recover what you need.

Dear Mick,

I've sent you an email, but, in case you don't get it, perhaps SingsIrishSongs will pass along the message. --

Whatever resources that I possess are at your disposal. I can only guess at the emotions you must be going through right now. Try not to be too depressed -- there are many good folks here at the Mudcat who will help you. Please, please let us know what we can do for you!

Your friend, Áine

I feel with you, Mick. Losing a work of love can be nearly as devastating as losing a friend.

What kind of a demented pervert would steal traditional Irish lyrics?

Thanks everyone for your sympathetic and kind words. I will let Mick know about this thread.

Unfortunately the process of categorizing the database to computer disk hadn't been completed (it was ever changing and you don't expect your computer to be stolen....)thus, everything was on hard drive. BIG BUMMER!

I am thankful that he wasn't home at the time or that he didn't walk in on the robbery in progress! That could have been dangerous.

Thankfully he had his Martin with him at the time, so he is still singing and strumming!

Things happen for reasons...I believe that. One good thing in this is that you now have more time to focus on other projects (you know what I am referring to).

Good luck with your endeavours and God bless you Mick!

Always,

Mary Kate

My sympathy, Mick. No way I can help, of course, but I will be in the UK fairly soon and I will be pleased to send you a copy of my book, "A Bonnie Bunch of Roses." Give me your mailing address.

All the best,
Dan Milner

I feel for your loss. I predict that if the theves are found by any of us that they will thrown in bed with the captains daughter and have their bellies shaved with a rusty razor. Really - Best of Luck. Wesley

My old law enforcement instincts are coming out now.. and, I would like to remind everyone to ALWAYS take the time to record the serial numbers of everything you own. You may not recover them if stolen, but, I guarantee that if you DONT record them, you will NEVER get them back. Without those numbers it is impossible to prove who they belong to. I've had personal experience with this..some creep broke into my house and stole a number of items. I was able to give the numbers to the police and, as a result, the thief was caught, I got them back, and he got 5 to 7 in the gray bar hotel. The only damage was some finger print powder on the vcr.

Mick, I know how you must feel, Some years ago I lost my 'songbook' when the police stole my car. The car was only worth a couple of thousand dollars but the songbook was priceless.

If there are any songs you need just post your requests here and we'll rally round to try to find them for you.

Bert.

I had an email from Mick today, and I don't think he'd mind me sharing the good news (and the bad news) with you.

The police have apprehended one of the *&%$#@)*&'s that robbed him. The good news is that he now has his printer and his cameras back. The bad news is that the *&%$#@)*& the police caught won't give up the other *&%$#@)*& that has Mick's computer.

Let's hope that the little *&%$#@)*& will change his mind and 'grass' on his mate. And let's hope that Mick wins the lottery very soon so he can replace his computer if the little *&%$#@)*& keeps his gob shut.

Mick's loss, is a loss to far more than one man....it affects an international community

It is important to backup important records in outside areas. For data files, such as lyrics which are small, 25meg is available for free at "xdrive.com." Friends will frequently provide backup mirrors, if done even on a weekly or monthly level it can save a total loss.

Áine,

Thanks for sharing that...Mick had told me the same info per a valuefone call (my pc to his phone). I was glad to hear that his cameras were recovered...he's had them for quite awhile and I imagine they have sentimental value.

It would be great if the other *&%$#@)*& were caught! (I am curious, was that Mick's term or your's Áine?) Even if the computer were to be recovered, I am sure the hard drive has already been erased.....

Gargoyle, that's useful info re xdrive.com.

Kendall, serial numbers are important! Photos of your items also help...

Thanks everyone!

Mary

Dear Mary,

No, the term *&%$#@)*& was my own -- it was the nicest thing I could call the *&%$#@)*&s that stole from Mick! It was good, however, to hear that he's over the 'shock and retribution' stage. I don't know if I'd be that quick to get over such a shock! What a guy!

Áine, (and anyone else reading)

Mick is truly a fine fellow! We've become very good friends over the last 1 1/2 years and counting. I look forward to the day I get to meet him in person! I must say I will truly miss working with him on the Featured Song of the Month!

It takes a special person to recover so quickly....though I think knowing that at least one of the bleepity-bleeps was caught helps, not to mention that some items have been recovered. AND having friends to lean on!

Violated was the one word that came to mind as for how it must have felt....again, I am glad he wasn't home at the time/nor walked in on the robbery in progress....

You truly have to count your blessings!

~ Mary

My sympathies as well, having suffered from a hard drive crash at work, I'm in no position to chide others for not doing back-ups, I certainly do now. My personal repertoire has taken years to recover from the loss of a little notebook I jotted down songs from friends when I was teen & twenty, but in my case that's probably as well. Being on the Mudcat has enabled me to recapture many of them, but now I'm old and wise enough to know I should only sing in private, with very tolerant friends, or with people I'll never expect to meet again!
I hope Mick gets his hard drive back with recoverable data on it.
