1,000 CANDLES 1,000 CRANES
The Small Potatoes song 1000Candles/1000 Cranes mentions the month of August.
I've a picture in my mind
Of two women slowly walking

Walking to church to light a candle

THE STREETS OF STAITHES
by Vin Garbutt

One fine August day as I was making my way
Along the hardship-troubled streets of Staithes,
I saw the seagulls flying in the grey northern sky
Heard the shifting chorus of the waves

CYPRUS BRIG

There is no mention of August in the lyrics of this song, but the notes in the DT say:

The seizure of convict ships by convicts happened a number of times.
This particular event occured in August 1829, and a manuscript in the
Mitchell Library has a poem of 48 lines that commemorates the seizure.
Titled 'Seizure of the Cyprus Brig in Recherche Bay' it is printed in
Geoffrey Ingleton's True Patriots All and attributed to Frank MacNamara
(Frank the Poet).

NOW WESTLIN WINDS
(Robert Burns)

Now westlin winds, and slaught'ring guns
Bring August's pleasant weather;
The moorcock springs, on whirring wings,
Amang the blooming heather;
Now waving grain, wide o'er the plain,
Delights the weary Farmer;
The moon shines bright, as I rove at night,
To muse upon my Charmer.

THE GALWAY RACES

As I rode down to Galway town to seek for recreation
On the seventeenth of August me mind being elevated
There were multitudes assembled with their tickets at the station
Me eyes began to dazzle and I'm goin' to see the races.

David Kidman usually joins the Mudcat singaround. He is presently presenting songs of Keith Marsden, coming up to the anniversary of Marsden's death on 10 Aug. 1991. David sang Morley Main at another song circle last night (23 July) but that apparently is about a disaster that happened in a different month, Oct, in 1872. The lyrics of Morley Main and of several other Keith Marsden songs can be found posted in Mudcat.

I'm sorry to say I recorded Raglan Road with August (morn). Realising I'd sung August rather than Autumn I repeated it to save another take.

Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of August ie: (A) Any songs with August in the title (B) Any songs with an August date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in August even if the lyrics do not actually say so.
It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and also more sources of information about them.

Below is an alphabetical index of the titles collected in this thread so far. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be jumped to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occurs. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “Post to this thread” or POST buttons to jump to the end of the thread. I shall sometimes rearrange “ late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked.When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below. - Regards, GeoffLawes
