In the 1860s she was a camp follower of the wagon train taking pioneers to open up new lands in America.

Well there's Kipling Cliff and a fabulous fossil forest on the beach which is exposed at very low spring tides. There used to be a somewhat notorious sewage outfall that threatened the beach, but I assume that's been fixed. It's 30 years since I went, though I can be there in 45 minutes. But I have Bude...

I don't know about Westward Ha!, but Westward Ho! is in Devon, not Somerset.

Had an interesting local railway and it is said that one of the locomotives was sunk after being sold when the ship it was being transported on went down.
Should be a song there somewhere.

Westward Ho!.... the only place in Britain with an exclamation mark as part of its name. On the coast of North Devon near Bideford town. Spent many a day there as a child, sitting on the pebble ridge which runs the length of the beach and stops the resort being flooded. Great beach for swimming.

I remember dad having a record with that (apparently the Old Superb) on, possibly the John Shirley-Quirk recording of Songs of the Sea

I'm a little confused here:
was the thread title meant to be
'about Westward Ho!' and it came out 'Ha!' instead??


There is a USA connection to the Ha variation of the phrase.
Humo[u]rist S. J. Perelman collaborated with
the famous cartoonist Al Hirschfeld on a book titled:

Westward Ha! or,
Around the World in Eighty Clichés.

I haven't looked at it yet.
