Subject: Iain MacGillivray From: Johnny J Date: 30 Jul 21 - 07:50 AM Just heard the sad news on Travelling Folk last night that Iain has passed away. I don't know the circumstances although he has had health issues for many years.... As usual, condolences to all his friends and family who may read this. Iain was a fine performer of traditional and contemporary(as we used to say) folk song but not honoured as well as he might have been especially in his home town. He was a regular performer at The Market Bar in the eighties but the audiences there could be rather "mixed" ;-) However, his annual concerts with good friend Ranald Smith were always very popular and the stuff of legends.... Iain also had a long association with the sadly missed Inverness Folk Festival over the years and was also well known in Edinburgh circuit where he resided in the late sixties/early seventies. Although Iain undoubtably had a style of his own, in my opinion, there are also strong musical influences from both Archie Fisher and Dick Gaughan in his performances. Here's a link to Iain's album which I've managed to find on You Tube. If you can trace a copy, you should buy one, of course. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ence_L3J-8 |
