Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: Felipa Date: 29 Dec 21 - 04:08 PM Ah, there is another 2021 book which is the theme for a Camp Harmony singaround. Dick Holdstock is leading a workshop of songs from his book “Again With One Voice: British Songs of Political Reform, 1768 to 1868,” to be held this Friday the 31st at 1:30 pm Pacific time (9.30 pm GMT/UTC) As I said before, undoubtedly some of the Secret Stream songs would suit other singarounds at Camp Harmony. I also heard that there is a possibility of having impromptu workshops in unoccupied breakaway rooms and that there will be a bulletin board where these can be publicised. About 8 hours after Camp Harmony registration was supposed to close, someone emailed me that it appeared to still be open. I don't know the present situation ... if you haven't registered it's probably to late, but perhaps not! |
Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 28 Dec 21 - 04:35 AM Pity! It was a nice idea. Never mind. |
Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: Felipa Date: 27 Dec 21 - 12:33 PM Maybe that proposed Secret Stream singaround has been withdrawn. I didn't take any note of the day or time or who was leading the session. Today I don't see it on the Camp Harmony schedule https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12jldcYY9h_brhNvp-A9HZP6cusmaSIDmOhW9NFUrdhI/edit#gid=169893150 Of course songs featured in the book would feature at other singarounds. Camp Harmony is online from 30 Dec - 2 Jan 2021-22. Pre-registration is required and that closes at noon- US Pacific time (2 pm Central, 3 pm Eastern, 8 pm GMT, etc) - on TUES 28 DEC. at https://forms.gle/DPuWTC5FAe3a7crWA |

Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: Felipa Date: 25 Dec 21 - 03:25 PM I see that Camp Harmony includes a singaround of songs from "A Secret Stream". Does it matter whether or not people sing the same versions that are in/mentioned in the book. Camp Harmony is on line 30 Dec- 2 Jan. Registration closes Tues 28 Dec at 12 noon Pacific time (8 pm UTC) |

Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: GUEST,PB Date: 25 Dec 21 - 08:31 AM Thanks very much, but she's a very competent sight reader- the picking bit was to adjust the pitch to her voice. I'll repeat, a lovely book. |
Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 25 Dec 21 - 07:28 AM I will be happy to send the tunes as MP3 files for free to help her. Just contact me . thetraditionbearer@hotmail.co.uk |
Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: GUEST,PB Date: 25 Dec 21 - 06:31 AM I bought this as a Christmas present for Madame... smash hit, she's been down there learning songs from it and picking out the tunes on her concertina almost from the moment she got up. She's not even looked at her other presents yet. It's a great book, buy it. |
Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: The Sandman Date: 27 Nov 21 - 04:24 AM I did not know that,Nick. I have not seen the cover , but if i had, and i did not like it ,it would not bother to comment, in my opinion the purpose of a book review is to let people know about the contents of the book |
Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 26 Nov 21 - 02:48 PM The artist is a friend of Clive Boutle. I do not know his name. It was a lino cut I believe, based upon Tom Cave and Emma Glover's son and daughter as photographed by Cecil Sharp. Clive sent me two original ink prints last week. I rather like it as well. I've always been a fan of Folk Art as many people know. |
Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: The Sandman Date: 26 Nov 21 - 09:35 AM I would not judge a book by its cover |
Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: matt milton Date: 26 Nov 21 - 07:48 AM "Also, like the others, it features a monochrome cover graphic, but not in this case a wood-cut of the sort used in so many broadside publications. I find the present one far less pleasing than the others." Gotta love Mr Stradling's consistently comprehensive attitude to reviewing a product in its entirety! In the name of balance, I for one found the extraordinary cover really striking; my compliments to whoever made it/designed it. |

Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Nov 21 - 09:31 PM I hate it when the first printed copy comes out, and I discover all the mistakes I missed. Why are they so hard to see on a computer screen, and so easy to see on paper? When we did the Rise Again Songbook, we got the index wrong, and we printed 10,000 incorrect copies. We sent out a PDF correction sheet, but it was agony to deal with those mistakes. I was intent to not repeat the mistakes of our Rise Up Singing Songbook, but we still made mistakes on the Rise Again sequel - and the index was a complete fiasco. -Joe-

Subject: RE: A Secret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: matt milton Date: 05 Oct 21 - 06:16 AM It arrived in the post yesterday. Lovely cover. Didn't realise it would have a few tunes in their too - a nice bonus, given I'm a fiddle player. Some interesting things in there on first read through. 'Fountain of Christ's Blood' is possibly the most grand guignol carol I've ever seen! I hadn't seen that carol before. Strong stuff, I'll definitely alarm a few people down the local folk club with that one at our Christmas singaround! Also, I don't remember 'Billy Taylor' (William Taylor) being quite so dramatic in the other versions I know - I like the version in here very much. And collected in Witney too, where my other half grew up - a place I know very well. The book's reminded me that 'The Robin's Petition' is a song I'd been meaning to learn as well. It's a lovely book - well done and many thanks Nick. Roll on volume 2! |

Subject: RE: ASecret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: GUEST,matt milton Date: 08 Sep 21 - 04:49 AM Glad this thread has been revived, wasn't aware of this book, now at the top of my shopping list. Nick, I noticed you are booked in for Orpington folk club in December. What's the best way to keep up to date with your gigs? Do you have a website? |
Subject: RE: ASecret Stream (Vol 1) New Book Nick Dow From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 08 Sep 21 - 02:36 AM Yes I was working from memory. I'll make some notes for the next workshop, which is Will and Pippa Noble's on Zoom, and then Tenterden in person followed by Edgeworth Festival on the Sunday (!!) I've spent half my life with Gypsy folk so I don't mind being counted with them even if I am not related! A sort of compliment. By the way Jane Cole was a tent dweller in the New Forest I believe. She was the matriarch of all the Cole Brothers and sisters. The whole thing was rather mixed up by Alice Gillington, who insisted that the Sebbage family were New Foresters, but Edith Sebbage was in service in Sussex. Like you say they travelled. |
