I found a hummingbird swing in a catalog, and the DH got a picture of a hummingbird using it. Apparently hummingbirds like a horizontal "twig" to rest on. (not to actually swing)

We decided to have a little outing to Norwich. On the way there, we came upon a massive tail-back due to a not-too-serious accident (4X4 blocking the road, Police in attendance) Clever husband is a brilliant navigator (Me? not so much!) and found a wiggly way down a little lane, round all the by-ways until we emerged the other side of the City.
It was strange to see Norwich again (long time, no see) so we went on to Riverside where there's a huge Nike store (no prizes for guessing which one of us wanted to go in there!) Husband was in heaven examining all the sports stuff. But he didn't buy anything, just looked (phew!) Both of us fully masked up of course.
Into the big Morrisons and bought.....CHIPS!!! (Almost as nice as crumpets)
On arriving home, neighbour-across-the-road came to the door with home-grown tomatoes, runner beans (like you, Steve, we love 'em!) and young peas in pods.
Finally about a hundred beautiful Canada geese flew over our bungalow honking like mad.
Very nice day in all.

Charmion, that's the downside of time zones, I'm afraid. Here in the UK the singarounds happen very conveniently on Monday evenings. Perhaps you could relocate?

If the Earth were flat, would it have just a single time zone? Discuss, not necessarily here.

I love Benedictine, too. I think I’ll have some before I go to bed. A fitting reward for yet another day of loyally clearing the cats’ litter and refilling their clever electric water fountain.

Again, I missed the Mudcat sing-around! My life is all wrong: too often, something Else that I can’t duck happens on a Monday afternoon.

We had a fantastic day with our one-and-only grandson, aged five. We sorted some lovely coloured pebbles for him to play with, then he helped me to pick the last of my broad bean crop. His mum and dad went for a sentimental walk, an hour down the road, on the cliff tops where Sonny Jim had proposed to her many moons ago, while we looked after the lad. We went to the local play park and did a bit of shopping and a good time was had by all three of us. And I now have twelve two-person portions of broad beans in the freezer, so that another winter in which she won't be able to divorce me!

I get to sing with people I've come to know to know and love. We do it every Monday, and it has come to mean so much to me.

P.S. But Joe, I sure like Benedictine, too.

We did a drive through covid test at NIH headquarters and my wife tested negative despite a earlier test out of state and that she had all the breakthrough symptoms. I guess regular cold virus' are still out there. So its an even better day. Its not the only false alarm since we had a fire alarm go off at 2 AM in an Ithaca hotel last week.

What a great thread, and I hope anyone can play.

Crossed a little mountain range on a road new to me, and it was tricky, but scenic, and nothing went wrong. Got to a nice RV park new to me, and got in a great swim workout and a shower in a delightful stall with giant purple flowers on the curtain.

Came back to my little home on wheels, and had a great dinner some good people package in Texas just so I can have a decent meal in 7 minutes. Got a text from a friend. Saw this great thread. Cracked open the bottle of Negro Amaro I've been saving for months, as Steve did in post 1. Ahhhh. Let us be grateful for things that go right.

Yes, Steve, Marcella's lemon chicken works with a four-and-a-bit-pound (2-kilo) bird; the only difference is cooking time. I leave it on its breast for the first half hour, then turn it on its back and continue roasting for another half hourat 375F, then raise the temperature to 400F for the last half hour-ish. Base your cooking time on 25 minutes a pound, plus or minus a few depending on your oven.

My usual chicken roast is a bird of at least two kilos, but Marcella's book suggests a smaller bird for her two-lemons recipe. I take courage from your post, Charmion, that it works with a bigger bird. Hurry up and confirm this for me, as I have to roast a large chicken in the next eighteen hours!

I love Marcella’s roast chicken with lemons in it. Edmund could easily eat half a two-kilo bird, including both legs (the pig).

I came home from Windsor this afternoon to find both cats at the door, tails up and meowing loudly. They missed me.

I did a tour of the eastern shore to the Great Lakes and with my penchant for talking to strangers I had more than one covid widow tell me their tale of woe. I have seen the actual cross section of Americans
minus the media interpretations.

Survival with a vaccine isn't remarkable but some experts say there may be a vaccine resistent varient just waiting to emerge. M rna techniques will be invaluable and a new protein folding technique makes the impossible possible. So excluding human irrationality, things are looking hopeful.

Going from sitting for a year to walking 10 miles a day was agonizing at first but the hip and back agony has finally passed so quickly it was like I wore down a spur and woke sleeping muscles. Use it or lose it.

Well today, though I woke up knackered due to attacks of cramp through the night (long-standing but not something I'm going to die of), I discovered to my delight that my salmorejo freezes beautifully. And that my broad bean crop is excellent (I have an hour's shelling to do before I hit the sack), and that I have a glut of lovely runner beans to boot. The icing on the cake was my Marcella Hazan chicken with two lemons. I had what is, for us, a rather small chicken (three pounds), so I decided to cook it Marcella's way, which is far removed from my usual roast chicken method. We had it with my own early potatoes, simply boiled, and my runner beans, topped with a bit of the juice from the chicken and lashings of butter, and it was the best thing I've cooked for months. So not too bad a day! I have the dregs of a bottle of red still to go, so I'll use that to raise a glass to the saintly Marcella!

That is EXCELLENT news, Don! I hope there is no "long COVID" along with her case.

I've got one! I have friends who used to come over for lunch every few weeks; we retired from the same institution and have been friends for years so we meet to talk - about mostly everything else except the institution. These wonderful lunches stopped in January 2020. We've only had one meeting all of us this year, with our masks and the time was cut short, but we're going to do another and have set the date next weekend. That said, I suddenly feel inspired to pick up around here, to dust and sweep and scrub sinks and make the house an inviting place for our visit. We may still wear masks part of the time, but we'll all be vaccinated.

I made a batch of my favorite cranberry bars that I cut in very small pieces and put in the freezer, so some of those will come out for dessert, and whatever we have, it will include a side of fresh salsa made from the abundance of tomatoes and peppers in the yard this summer. I canned a lot of it, but I have some tomatoes that aren't perfect and shouldn't be canned, but they will be just fine for a fresh batch that goes into the fridge in a jar. My house smells amazing right now, counter tops are beginning to be cleared, and the table will be clear and ready to use next week.

BONUS: There is a thunderstorm hovering over the area this afternoon. My blue heeler doesn't care for it, but my garden loves it!

Finished reading "Sharpe's Fury" and am now sat with my feet up,contemplating another pale ale. It doesn't get much better :-)

In most years Christmas in July is huge, as a real traditional Northern Hemisphere Christmas in Australia in summer is not a sensible idea, but this year we've been in lockown since late June, so the activities advertised in the link probably suffered.

Good for you - glad you had such a good day and found pleasure in all those things.
I'm happy too just now - yes, I've had a fat crumpet thick with melting butter! Carpe crumpet!

...Not every day is a good day. But today I managed to stop my pop-up gazebo from blowing away in a gale that had 70mph gusts (by pinning it down in unorthodox fashion, which I won't go into...) We get so much joy from that cheapo gazebo in summer... I also managed to cut my grass in the teeth of a strong wind, I made some lovely Marcella aubergine patties for lunch and some stunning Yotam cherry tomato sauce for tea. I was massively inspired by the fairytale gold medal in the women's BMX, won by the utterly charming and unaffected Bethany Shriever, who had been turned down by UK Sport for Olympic funding but who got there against the odds and despite many injuries via a crowdfunding campaign. Up yours, UK Sport! And then I watched Sibelius 2 on telly from the first night of the Proms, the BBC Symphony conducted by the wonderful, passionate and committed conductor Dalia Stasevska. And this Negroamaro I'm drinking ain't half bad either (come on, it's Friday!)

Tomorrow could be a crock of shite, but bejaysus most of the world is a lot worse off than I am... Carpe diem!
