hi! i'm looking for the (guitar)chords and lyrics for Clarence Ashley's traditional tune, "The Coo-coo bird". i know it has been remade several times, but I'd just like to get some kind of idea of how the tune is played in general, since i love it and would love to play it. thanks!

I know it's done in a modal tuning.

Lyr Add: COO-COO BIRD
Clarence Ashley- Solo performance; Banjo and vocal- 1929

(Banjo intro)

Gonna build me, log cabin,
On a mountain, so high;
So I can, see Willie
As he goes, on by.

Hmmm Hmmm (hums melody here)
Hmmm Hmmm
Hmmm Hmmm
Hmmm Hmmm

Oh the coo-coo, is a pretty bird,
She *wobbles as she flies;
She never hollers, "coo-coo"
'Til the fourth day of July.

I've played cards, in England,
I've played cards, in Spain;
I'll bet you, ten dollars
I'll beat you, next game.

**Jack of Diamonds, Jack of Diamonds
I've known you, from old
Now you've robbed my, poor pockets
Of my silver, and my gold.

(Banjo)

Hmmm Hmmm
Hmmm Hmmm
Hmmm Hmmm
Hmmm Hmmm

I've played cards in England,
I've played cards in Spain;
I'll bet you ten dollars
I beat you this game.

Oh the coo-coo, is a pretty bird,
She *wobbles, as she flies;
She never hollers, "coo-coo"
'Til the fourth day of July.

*warbles
**aslo found in "Rye Whiskey" versions

If you go to the John Hartford website and click on videos, then on Back Porch, you'll find a superb video of Clarence Ashley singing and playing it on banjo.
