I've been listening to Ellen Harpers book on talking book.

Ellen tells a story about her problems booking the Reverend Gary Davis. How she was warned not to let him drink alcohol, how he turned nasty and finally drank a whole bottle of Jim Bean and collapsed.

I always got the impression from Pete Seeger and Stefan Grossman's recollections that he was pleasant rather avuncular character, and goes without saying - his playing was genius level.

Did anyone here know him?

I remember Bob Weir saying in an interview that he took some lessons from the reverend late in his life and that Davis would only accept booze and cigars in payment, as his wife, Annie, had forbidden his use of either.

I remember Patrick Sky coming backstage at The Gaslight with some for the Reverend, who was quite happy to have it. And Mrs. Davis was there and didn't object.

This article touches on the reverend's relation with booze on the 2nd page. How true it is I can't say but it's an interesting article on one of the great fingerpickers.

What about Roy bookbinder?
Was he not something of a Rev. Gary Davis 'disciple'?
Does he say anything?
