-Joe Offer- Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of November ie: (A) Any songs with November in the title (B) Any songs with a November date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in November even if the lyrics do not actually say so. It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and also more sources of information about them. Below is an alphabetical index of the titles collected in this thread so far. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be jumped to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occurs. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “Post to this thread” or POST buttons to jump to the end of the thread. I shall sometimes rearrange “ late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked. Or I might add in-thread links between separated posts on the same songs When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below.- Regards, GeoffLawes

Subject: RE: Any November Songs? From: JHW Date: 18 Oct 21 - 07:22 AM ROBERT WILLANCE Oh Willance he was a wealthy man, in Richmond did reside-o And all to take of the winter’s air for Marrick he did ride-o But ere the priory was into view he’s headed back for town–o As on the top of the Whitcliffe Scar the mist comes clouding down-o He’s picked his way all through the mist and as he heads for home-o There’s many a stream aye and ditch to cross along the way he’s come-o And when he’s come to the first bank side, “Go well me mare”, says he-o And out she leaps all through the mist and safe has landed she-o So when he’s come to the next bank side, again she leaps the mare-o And here again at the third bank side so bravely through the air-o And when he’s come to the next bank side, he tightly holds the rein-o As across the ditch be short or wide she blindly leaps again-o But here’s the edge of the Whitcliffe Scar, two hundred feet below All tumbled over all through the air does horse and rider go The poor mare came crashing down and broken lay and dead-o And Willance he fell by her side, his leg all tore and red-o And as he lay in the shivering damp, O Willance he did cry-o If no-one finds me here tonight then surely I may die-o But as he felt of his broken bones his face was pale and ill-o Then he says, “Me mare, you’ve served me well but you may serve me still-o For if I cut open my good mare’s side then I may not be lost -o And if I place all my leg inside it’ll save me from the frost-o” So he’s cut open her belly wide and that was how they found him Alive and with his leg inside, the corpse still warm around him They’ve taken him down to Richmond town, his leg they have took off him And in Saint Mary’s old churchyard they’ve placed it in a coffin And ten years after did Willance die and as he had decided His leg it was dug up again and they were reunited. Willance’s Leap why the place is known and you can still read there-o His words upon the marking stone as thanks to God and mare-o. 1606 Hear Us. Glory be to our merciful God who miraculously preserved me from the danger so great. |

Where Whorlton Castle stood it's ground, Red candle berries strewn around, Between the yews I walk alone To read a verse upon a stone These words above his head there put By one long dead there underfooot, Beside the ruined chancel wall I read his message to us all 'Remember Man as thou goes by As thou are now so once was I As I am now so must thou be Remember Man that thou must die' The frost is white behind the stone My lamp alight to lead me home But then a fear a sudden dread For now I hear the words I read 'Remember Man as thou... Subject: RE: Any November Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 22 Nov 22 - 03:48 PM 22 November On this day in 1963, John F Kennedy, president of the United States, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, during the run-up to the 1964 presidential campaign. "He Was a Friend of Mine" is a traditional folk song in which the singer laments the death of a friend. Ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax was the first to collect the song, in 1939, describing it as a "blues" that was "a dirge for a dead comrade." The Byrds issued a reworded version of the song in 1965, with lyrics that lament the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Wikipedia "Abraham, Martin and John" is a 1968 song written by Dick Holler. The song itself is a tribute to the memory of four assassinated Americans, all icons of social change: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy. It was written in response to the assassination of King and that of Robert Kennedy in April and June 1968, respectively. Wikipedia Link to post by GerryM, above THAT WAS THE PRESIDENT |
Subject: RE: Any November Songs? From: Felipa Date: 23 Nov 22 - 07:56 PM Maybe there is a thread for Thanksgiving songs, but anyway today I heard COLONOSCOPY SONG performed by The Rural Characters and it includes the line about the nurse, " I knew she did this for a living, Like a turkey for Thanksgiving". The song has some far better rhymes than that one, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awNXYlqCspA Currently showing on Mudcat are a couple of songs about not pardoning the turkey at Thanksgiving Albuquerque is a turkey and he's feathered and he's fine Albuquerque is a turkey and he's absolutely mine He's the best pet you can get yet, better than a dog or cat And he wobbles as he gobbles and he's awfully proud of that Albuquerque is a turkey and he's happy in his bed 'Cause for Thanksgiving dinner, we eat egg fu yung instead. Subject: RE: Any November Songs? From: Pete from seven stars link Date: 29 Nov 22 - 07:02 PM 1.Trees in November look sad and bare Branches are empty , leaves on the ground Foliage fallen and it carpets the earth Scattered and drifting without a sound. 2. Life can be hard , our hopes fallen down Sometime like trees we desolate stand Forgetting the sap is still in the trunk Renewing hope by an unseen hand. 3. Life like the branches is complex , we find Intricate patterned against stormy sky Branches though silent they reach upward still Like praying hands to God lifted high. 4. merciful God who created the trees comfort the hearts of those who weep give them the grace , to reach out to you the leaf that falls, to the love most deep. My own song . TREES IN NOVEMBER line inspired from a line in Watership Down |
