Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of November ie: (A) Any songs with November in the title (B) Any songs with a November date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in November even if the lyrics do not actually say so.
It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and also more sources of information about them.

Below is an alphabetical index of the titles collected in this thread so far. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be jumped to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occurs. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “Post to this thread” or POST buttons to jump to the end of the thread. I shall sometimes rearrange “ late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked. Or I might add in-thread links between separated posts on the same songs When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below.- Regards, GeoffLawes

Scottish outlaw and fiddler James MacPherson was tried and executed in November 1700. "Macpherson's Lament" is said to have been composed by him on the eve of his execution.

Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy

John F Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, was assassinated, 22 November 1963.

THAT WAS THE PRESIDENT
It's not only for the leader that the sorrow hits so hard
There are greater things I'll never understand
How a man so filled with life, even death was caught off guard.
That was the president and that was the man.

That Was the President, by Phil Ochs. Recording

I remember this one, November Snow. A group called Rejoice, consisting of a couple named Tom and Nancy Brown. No little about them. I have the album. From the late 60's I think. Musicians include Joe Osborn bass, Hal Blaine-drums and Larry Knechtel-piano and organ.

Yes, the heart of the world weighs heavy
With the helplessness of tears
For the man cut down in a Texas town

LYNDON JOHNSON TOLD THE NATION
Well here I sit in this rice paddy
Wondering about Big Daddy
And I know that Lyndon loves me so
Yet how sadly I remember
Way back yonder in November
When he said I'd never have to go

THE HUNTING SONG
I always will remember,
'Twas a year ago November,
I went out to hunt some deer
On a morning bright and clear.
I went and shot the maximum the game laws would allow,
Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow.

TURNING TOWARDS THE MORNING

Now October's growing thin
And November's coming home;
You'll be thinking of the season
And the sad things that you've seen,
And you hear that old wind walking,
Hear him singing high and thin,
You could swear he's out there singing
Of your sorrow.

Robert Willance and horse leapt accidentally from Whitcliffe Scar (212ft) nr Richmond (yes N.Yorks) in November 1606, we don't know a date or indeed his age. When I was away on a trainee engineer course I wrote a song of the tale and sang it at the Leap as part of the centenary celebrations in 2006.
It did happen in Nov but that doesn't get a mention in the song.

Do you have a title ,lyrics or recording that you can post JHW ?

WRECK OF THE 97

'Twas the twenty-second day of that November
And the clouds were hanging low
He took old 97 out of Washington station
Like an arrow shot from a bow

This version of the lyrics mentions November, but in fact the accident took place in September of 1903. Other versions, usually under the title "Wreck of the Old 97," don't mention a date at all.
Here's the 1924
recording by Vernon Dalhart, said to be the first country music hit record.

Three for Him who made us all

ROBERT WILLANCE

Oh Willance he was a wealthy man, in Richmond did reside-o
And all to take of the winter’s air for Marrick he did ride-o
But ere the priory was into view he’s headed back for town–o
As on the top of the Whitcliffe Scar the mist comes clouding down-o

He’s picked his way all through the mist and as he heads for home-o
There’s many a stream aye and ditch to cross along the way he’s come-o
And when he’s come to the first bank side, “Go well me mare”, says he-o
And out she leaps all through the mist and safe has landed she-o

So when he’s come to the next bank side, again she leaps the mare-o
And here again at the third bank side so bravely through the air-o
And when he’s come to the next bank side, he tightly holds the rein-o
As across the ditch be short or wide she blindly leaps again-o

But here’s the edge of the Whitcliffe Scar, two hundred feet below
All tumbled over all through the air does horse and rider go
The poor mare came crashing down and broken lay and dead-o
And Willance he fell by her side, his leg all tore and red-o

And as he lay in the shivering damp, O Willance he did cry-o
If no-one finds me here tonight then surely I may die-o
But as he felt of his broken bones his face was pale and ill-o
Then he says, “Me mare, you’ve served me well but you may serve me still-o

For if I cut open my good mare’s side then I may not be lost -o
And if I place all my leg inside it’ll save me from the frost-o”
So he’s cut open her belly wide and that was how they found him
Alive and with his leg inside, the corpse still warm around him

They’ve taken him down to Richmond town, his leg they have took off him
And in Saint Mary’s old churchyard they’ve placed it in a coffin
And ten years after did Willance die and as he had decided
His leg it was dug up again and they were reunited.

Willance’s Leap why the place is known and you can still read there-o
His words upon the marking stone as thanks to God and mare-o.

1606 Hear Us.
Glory be to our merciful God who miraculously preserved me from the danger so great.

When apples still grow in November,
When blossoms still grow from each tree,

A land that has never known freedom,
And only her rivers run free.

Rose hip November - Autumn I’ll remember
Gold landing at our door, catch one leaf and fortune will surround you evermore

Pine tree very tall, waiting for snow to fall
Mist hangs very still, caught by dawn in castle moats around the sleeping hill

Now a pipe is heard happy is the shepherd
shepherdess and dog, father of the pastureland and mother of the flock

Rosehip November - autumn I’ll remember
Gold landing at our door, catch one leaf and fortune will surround you
Evermore

Ah ha, hush dat fuss
Everybody move to da back of the bus
Do you wanna bump and slump wit us We da type of people make da club get crunk
Ah ha, hush dat fuss
Everybody move to da back of the bus
Do you wanna bump and slump wit us
We da type of people make da club get crunk

Many a day has passed, the night has gone by
But still I find the time to put that bump off in your eye
Total chaos, for these playas, thought we was absent
We taking another route to represent the Dungeon family
Like Great Day, me and and my nigga decide to take the back way
We stabbin every city when we headed to that bat cave
A-T-L, Georgia, what we do for ya
Bull doggin hoes like them Georgetown Hoyas
Boy you soundin silly, thank my Brougham aint sittin pretty
Doin doughnuts round you suckas like them circles around titties
Damn, we the committee, gone burn it down
But us gone bust you in the mouth with the chorus now
Ah ha, hush dat fuss
Everybody move to da back of the bus
Do you wanna bump and slump wit us We da type of people make da club get crunk
Ah ha, hush dat fuss Everybody move to da back of the bus
Do you wanna bump and slump wit us
We da type of people make da club get crunk

I met a gypsy and she hipped me to some life game
To simulate then activate the left and right brain
Said baby boy you're only funky as your last cut
You focus on the past your ass'll be a has but
Thats one to live by or either that one to die to
I try to just throw it at you determine your own adventure
Andre, got to her station heres my destination
She got off the bus, the conversation lingered in my head for hours
Took a shower kinda sour cause my favorite group aint commin wit it
But im witcha you cause you probably goin through it anyway
But anyhow when in doubt, went on out and bought it
Cause I thought it would be jammin, but examine all the flawsky-wasky
Awfully sad and its costly but thats all she wrote
And I hope I never have to float in that boat
Up shits creek "it's weak" is the last quote
That I want to hear when i'm goin down when all's said and done
And we got a new joe in town
When the record playa get skippin and slowin down
All y'all can say is them niggas earned that crown, but until then
Ah ha, hush dat fuss
Everybody move to da back of the bus
Do you wanna bump and slump wit us We da type of people make da club get crunk

Ah ha, hush dat fuss
Everybody move to da back of the bus
Do you wanna bump and slump wit us
We da type of people make da club get crunk

Ah ha, hush dat fuss
Everybody move to da back of the bus
Do you wanna bump and slump wit us We da type of people make da club get crunk

ROSA PARKS by Kristin Lems     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnC4KYqcV1k

In Montgomery Alabama not a long time ago
A colored lady sat down on the bus
She was tired, she did day work
She scrubbed floors, her feet hurt
And since that day, she changed the world for us

Because she said, “No sir, I won’t get up.
I’m tired and I want to sit down and I won’t get up.”
You can talk about Martin Luther King,
Have demonstrations, anything
Just remember who began it – Rosa Parks!

Well in this wide and wicked world, tell me
What kind of man
Would say to a nice old lady, “Nxxx, get up!”
Well she was just like me and you
And she did what she must do
And she said, “No sir, I won’t get up.”

And she said, “No sir, I won’t get up.
I’m tired and I want to sit down and I won’t get up.”
You can talk about Martin Luther King,
Have demonstrations, anything
Just remember who began it – Rosa Parks!

Well one day the South will rise
And the North will realize
Who our heroes really truly are
And then we’ll tear down those statues Of Robert E. Lee
And put one up for good ole Rosie Parks!

Because she said, “No sir, I won’t get up.
I’m tired and I want to sit down and I won’t get up.”
You can talk about Martin Luther King,
Have demonstrations, anything
Just remember who began it – Rosa Parks!

8th NOVEMBER     - Big and Rich

Said goodbye to his momma as he left South Dakota
To fight for the red, white and blue
He was nineteen and green with a new M-16
Just doing what he had to do
He was dropped in the jungle where the choppers would rumble
With the smell of napalm in the air
And the sergeant said look up ahead
Like a dark evil cloud
Twelve-hundred came down on him and twenty-nine more
They fought for their lives but most of them died
In the one-seventythird Airborne
On the eighth of November the angels were crying
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire raining down and the hell all around
There were few men left standing that day
Saw the eagle fly through a clear blue sky
1965, the eighth of November
Now he's fifty-eight and his pony tail's gray
But the battle still plays in his head
He limps when he walks but he's strong when he talks
About the Shrapnel they left in his leg
He puts on a gray suit over his Airborne tattoo
And he ties it on one time a year
And remembers the fallen as he orders a tall one
And swallows it down with his tears
On the eighth of November the angels were crying
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire raining down and the hell all around
There were few men left standing that day
Saw the eagle fly through a clear blue sky
1965
The eighth of November
The eighth of November (eighth of November)
Said goodbye to his momma as he left South Dakota
To fight for the red, white, and blue
He was nineteen and green with a new M-16
Just doing what he had to do

As Yew trees are dropping their red berries it must be time for this one. Remember Man (a song to circulate a tombstone message) Whorlton Castle and old Church are near Swainby, North Yorkshire.

Where Whorlton Castle stood it's ground,
Red candle berries strewn around,
Between the yews I walk alone
To read a verse upon a stone

These words above his head there put
By one long dead there underfooot,
Beside the ruined chancel wall
I read his message to us all

'Remember Man as thou goes by
As thou are now so once was I
As I am now so must thou be
Remember Man that thou must die'

The frost is white behind the stone
My lamp alight to lead me home
But then a fear a sudden dread
For now I hear the words I read

'Remember Man as thou...

Beyond the tower I run in haste
Between the yews I reach the gate
And hear again the dreary rhyme
And feel a gentle hand on mine

'Remermber Man as thou...

A CHAT WITH YOUR MOTHER
(Lou & Peter Berryman)

There are jocks who think that God himself
Is drooling in the bleachers
In a cold November downpour
With a bellyful of brew
Whose entire grasp of heaven
Has a lot to do with football
It's from them I would expect to hear
The F-word, not from you

In THE PIG GOT UP (Lyrics: Benjamin Hapgood Burt,1880-1950,the boozer meets a pig in October and a horse in November.

I also well remember
One evening in November
When I was creeping home at break of day
For in my exhilaration
I engaged in conversation
With a cab-horse, right on the corner of Broadway

I was filled up to the eyeballs
With a flock of gin and highballs
So I whispered to the cab-horse old and grey
I says, "It's these all-night homeward marches
That gave us both our fallen arches."
And the old horse laughed and slowly walked away

A BALLYNURE BALLAD
Many recordings on YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=A+BALLYNURE+BALLAD

As I was goin' to Ballynure,
The day I well remember,
For to view the lads and lasses
On the fifth day of November,
With a ma-ring-doo-a-day,
With a ma-ring-a-doo-a-daddy oh.

As I was goin' along the road
When homeward I was walking,
I heard a wee lad behind a ditch-a
To his wee lass talking,
With a ma-ring-a-doo-a-daddy oh.

Said the wee lad to the wee lass
"It's will ye let me kiss ye,
For it's I have the cordial eye
That far exceeds the whiskey,"
With a ma-ring-a-doo-a-daddy oh.

This cordial that ye talk about
There's very few o' them gets it,
For there's nothin' now but crooked combs
And muslin gowns can catch it.
With a ma-ring-a-doo-a-daddy oh.

Repeat second verse

WHAT ELSE WAS IT?
by Peter Mulvey

You felt the first chill of November
Steal right inside your coat
Right there where the fragile pulse of living
Fluttered in your throat
You left the house you thought you lived in
Didn't even shut the door
Tell me: what else was it
You were looking for?

THE WIFE OF USHER'S WELL

Many versions of this song (Child 79) have it happening at Martinmas. Appropriate time for encounters between the living and the dead, especially since before the Gregorian calendar reform Martinmas could have coincided with Samhain.

Don't want to be alone in this house without a home, feeling the walls
I can't do this by myself, oh, but I'm the one who's left after the fall
November left behind its leaves like fallen angels' wings
Won't you fill up this hole in my heart, so deep and so cold, and so dark?
With the rain coming down, I'm afraid I could drown
If you don't fill up this hole in my heart

The Man at the Nore

1)Now my father was the keeper of the Eddystone light
And he dallied with a mermaid one fine night
From this union there came three
Two of them were fishes and the other was me

2)Now when I was but a bit of a slip
I was put in charge of the Nore lightship
I kept me lamps in very fine style
Doing of the work according to Hoyle

Chorus..after 2nd and last verse only
.Oh the raging Nore, the rolling Nore
The waves they tumble o'er and o'er
There's no such a life to be had on shore
As the one that's led by the Man at the

3)Well, one night when giving me wicks a trim
And A- Singing of a verse from the Evening Hymn
I spied by the glow of my signal lamp
The form of me mother looking rather damp

4)Just then me mother cried out, "Ahoy!"
And I saw that me mother was a-sitting on a buoy
That means a buoy for the ships that sail
And not a boy that's a juvenile male

5)Says I to my mother, Now how do you do
And how's my father and my sisters two
She says an orph-i-an you are
You've only got one sister and you've got no pa

6)Your father was drowned with several pals
And digested by some cannibals
Of your sisters, one was cooked in a dish
The other one is kept as a talking fish

7)Well, at that I wept like a soft-eyed scamp
And the flood of me tears made the waters damp
Says I to my mother, Won't you step within
You look awfully wet, just to dry your skin

8)Well me mother says "I likes the wet, my dear"
So I offered her a seat on me Bosuns chair
My mother, she looks at me with a frown
And said "It's owing to my nature that I can't sit down"

9)Says my mother, "you must never go on shore
But always remain the Man at the Nore"
Then I caught a flash of a glittering scale
And that was the end of my mother's tale(tail)

10)Now in deference to her maternal wish
I can't visit my sister, the talking fish
So if you sees her when you gets on shore
Give her the regards of the Man at the Nore...chorus

22 November On this day in 1963, John F Kennedy, president of the United States, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, during the run-up to the 1964 presidential campaign.

"He Was a Friend of Mine" is a traditional folk song in which the singer laments the death of a friend. Ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax was the first to collect the song, in 1939, describing it as a "blues" that was "a dirge for a dead comrade." The Byrds issued a reworded version of the song in 1965, with lyrics that lament the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Wikipedia

"Abraham, Martin and John" is a 1968 song written by Dick Holler. The song itself is a tribute to the memory of four assassinated Americans, all icons of social change: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy. It was written in response to the assassination of King and that of Robert Kennedy in April and June 1968, respectively. Wikipedia

Maybe there is a thread for Thanksgiving songs, but anyway today I heard COLONOSCOPY SONG performed by The Rural Characters and it includes the line about the nurse, " I knew she did this for a living, Like a turkey for Thanksgiving". The song has some far better rhymes than that one, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awNXYlqCspA

Currently showing on Mudcat are a couple of songs about not pardoning the turkey at Thanksgiving

Albuquerque is a turkey and he's feathered and he's fine
Albuquerque is a turkey and he's absolutely mine
He's the best pet you can get yet, better than a dog or cat
And he wobbles as he gobbles and he's awfully proud of that
Albuquerque is a turkey and he's happy in his bed
'Cause for Thanksgiving dinner, we eat egg fu yung instead.
(tune Clementine)

and there are a couple of other lyrics re NOT killing a turkey on that thread     /mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=52924&messages=9

1.Trees in November look sad and bare
Branches are empty , leaves on the ground
Foliage fallen and it carpets the earth
Scattered and drifting without a sound.

2. Life can be hard , our hopes fallen down
Sometime like trees we desolate stand
Forgetting the sap is still in the trunk
Renewing hope by an unseen hand.

3. Life like the branches is complex , we find
Intricate patterned against stormy sky
Branches though silent they reach upward still
Like praying hands to God lifted high.

4. merciful God who created the trees
comfort the hearts of those who weep
give them the grace , to reach out to you
the leaf that falls, to the love most deep.

My own song . TREES IN NOVEMBER   line inspired from a line in Watership Down

6 November On this day in 1917, the third battle of Ypres ended when British and Canadian troops captured Passchendaele Ridge.

The high ground of Hill 60, south of Zillebeke, was created in the 1850s by spoil dumped from the cutting for the railway line between Ypres and Comines. At 3:10 a.m. on 7 June 1917, 990,000 pounds (450,000 kg) of explosives went off under the German positions, demolishing a large part of Hill 60 and killing c.?10,000 German soldiers between Ypres and Ploegsteert. Today Hill 60 is a World War I battlefield memorial site and park.

7 November; on this day in 1783, the last public hanging in England took place at Tyburn (now Marble Arch in London) – forger John Austin was the last to die there.

Jack or John Hall...was born of poor parents who lived in a court off Grays Inn Road, London, and who sold him for a guinea at the age of 7 to be a climbing boy...Finally, having been taken in the act of burgling a house in Stepney, he was hanged at Tyburn on 17 December 1707. The Sound of History by Roy Palmer

A broadsheet of his Gallows Confessional was put to the melody of Captain Kidd, previously executed for piracy in 1701. Jack Hall's song was made popular in the 1850s with the adaptation Sam Hall by English comic minstrel, C.W. Ross. everything.explained.today

Ross’s ‘dismal Psalm-tune’ - also used by Walter [Pardon] - has been on the go for at least three hundred years and has done service for such songs as William Kidd, The Praties They Grow Small, Aikendrum and the hymn Wonderous Love. Reg Hall Voice of the People - Volume 17.

They drove me up Tyburn hill in a cart, in a cart,
They drove me up Tyburn hill in a cart,
They drove me up Tyburn hill, that’s where I made my will.
The best of friends must part; fare you well, fare you well,
The best of friends must part; fare you well.
Jack Hall sung by Walter Pardon, Knapton, Norfolk, 1976.

8 November; on this day in 1932, Franklin D Roosevelt – promising a “New Deal” for America – swept into the White House in a landslide in the US presidential election.

In May 1941, Woody Guthrie wrote a cycle of songs for the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) – a prestigious New Deal project intended to improve the infrastructure in the Columbia River Region. The 26 songs included  ROLL ON COLUMBIA,    GRAND COULEE DAM,    PASTURES OF PLENTY,  and    THE BIGGEST THING THAT MAN HAS EVER DONE . Guthrie earned a total of $266.66, which worked out to about ten dollars a song.

Has anyone suggested Loiudon Wainwright III's "Suddenly It's Christmas."

Suddenly it's Christmas, right after Hallowe'en
Forget about Thanksgiving, it's just a buffet in between
There's lights & tinsel in the window they're stocking up the shelves
Santa's slaving at the North Pole in his sweatshop full of elves

There's got to be a build-up to the day that Christ was born
The halls are decked with pumpkins and ears of Indian corn
Dragging through the falling leaves in a one-horse open sleigh
Suddenly it's Christmas seven weeks before the day

Suddenly it's Christmas, the longest holiday
When they say 'Season's Greetings', they mean just what they say
It's a season, it's a marathon, retail eternity
And it's not over 'til it's over and you throw away the tree

Outside it's positively balmy, in the air nary a nip
Suddenly it's Christmas, unbuttoned and unzipped
Yes, they're working overtime, Santa's little runts
Christmas comes but once a year and goes on for two months

Christmas carols in December and November too
It's no wonder we're depressed when the whole thing is through
Finally it's January; let's sing Auld Lang Syne
But here comes another party shaped just like a Valentine

Suddenly it's Christmas the longest holiday
The season is upon us, a pox, it won't go away
It's a season, it's a marathon, retail eternity
And it's not over 'til it's over and you throw away the tree
No it's not over 'til it's over and you throw away the tree
Iat's still not over 'til it's over nd you throw away the tree
