Hi all,

Does anyone 'round here remember this club in Amsterdam.NL?

I've added the word Club to the thread title here to distinguish it from the band Fairport Convention, but is was called just plain 'Folk Fairport'.

I regularly visited this small place on Prinsengracht (Prince's Canal) c.1975-1977. I often went on a Thurday night to listen to Colin Scot (mentioned here and there on this forum too).

I attended one truly sensational gig there, although I'm not sure when exactly.
Rumour had it at the time that the band Faiport C. were to play a late night set after playing a concert somewhere in NL (Utrecht, Leiden, Rotterdam maybe, but not A'dam IIRC).
Having been a FC fan since the Liege and Lief era I was determined to be at the gig.

It was well worth the rather long wait 'til they stepped onto the tiny stage.
All over sudden I was only six feet away from Sandy Denny. It must have been the 'Rising For The Moon' tour, so Trevor Lucas and Dave Swarbrick were there. I'm pretty sure that Dave Pegg was not one of the other performers. I don't remember the guitarist, but it may well have been Jerry Donahue.

I was so thrilled I forgot to listen closely to the songs.
I do rememder Swarb doing a rather lengthy risqué (lyrics) version of the Sailor's Alphabet. Sadly I forget which other songs were played.

Anyone here know about the Club's history?
Love to hear/read stories from you guys.

Cheers
WimB

I seem to remember the subject was discussed in the past. A search may throw up the old discussion, or someone may provide a link.

I played there in the early 70’s for a couple months, I had two nights a week. I was just a wandering teenager and it was a cool place. One night the owner asked if I would share the stage with a group called Fairplrt Convention who I’d never heard of being from the States. I reluctantly agreed as he was quite insistent… I had a phenomenally fun night with them.

Played the Fairport for about 3 months 1976
Two nights a week.Loved gigging there. Staff were great. So too were the audience. Complete silence while you were playing.

I found an old 'folk fairport' sign in a thrift store a few months ago.
