-Joe Offer- The songs-of-the-month threads need one for December that does not include anything specifically about the solstice or midwinter holidays, those having their own. Here's a few to begin... ALPHABETICAL DECEMBER INDEX Below is an alphabetical index of titles collected in this thread so far. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be "jumped" to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occur. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “Post to this thread” or POST buttons to jump to the end of the thread. We will sometimes rearrange “late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked. Subject: RE: Any December Songs? From: Levana Taylor Date: 16 Nov 21 - 06:42 PM ONE COLD MORNING IN DECEMBER One cold morning in December, I've reason to remember, I fell in love with such a charming girl. Her eyes were bright and tender, her form was tall and slender, Her hair it hung around her head in curls. Along the streets together, regardless of the weather, She took me to a house that stood quite near. She closed the door behind me, to me she said so kindly, "It's warmer in the bed, love, than down here." Subject: RE: Any December Songs? From: Levana Taylor Date: 16 Nov 21 - 07:28 PM THE BALLAD OF ST. ANNE'S REEL (by David Mallett) He was stranded in a tiny town on fair Prince Edward Island Waiting for a ship to come and find him A one horse place, a friendly face, some coffee and a tiny trace Of fiddling in the distance far behind him ............. Now the sailor's gone, the room is bare, the old piano's setting there Someone's hat's left hanging on the rack Some empty chairs, the wooden floor that feels the touch of shoes no more Awaiting for the dancers to come back And the fiddle's in the closet of some daughter of the town The strings are broke, the bow is gone and the cover's buttoned down But sometimes on December nights, when the air is cold and the wind is right There's a melody that passes through the town. Subject: RE: Any December Songs? From: Levana Taylor Date: 16 Nov 21 - 09:51 PM The various broadside ballads about naval combats against Turkish vessels ("The Royal Oak," "The Turkish Man-of-War," "Captain Mansfield's Fight," etc. etc.) are often supposed to have been inspired by an action on December 9, 1669, in which an English squadron under Admiral Kempthorne defeated nine Algerian ships. However, this thread points out that the 1669 battle may be the best known but not the only one, and that few or no specific details in the ballads link them to Kempthorne. (And when they give some date, it is not in December.) |

From: Felipa Date: 18 Nov 21 - 04:16 PM The Digital Tradition entry for The Walker of the Snow (see Levana's link on this thread 16 Nov) says "Sung by Davy Spillane on "Shadow Hunter," TARACD 3023, 1990". Davy Spillane plays on his album, but the singing is unmistakably that of Seán Tyrrell (r.i.p. 30 Oct 2021). I saw Seán and Davy at a gig once. Davy played uilleann pipes and whistle and I don't remember him singing anything. Walker of the Snow (via youtube) |

Although the siege is annually commemorated on August 14, one of the most celebrated events (referenced in most songs) took place on December 7, 1688, when a group of apprentices shut the town gates against Jacobite forces. |
Subject: RE: Any December Songs? From: GeoffLawes Date: 21 Nov 21 - 05:17 PM DERRY'S WALLS 7 December 1688 The siege of Derry in 1689 was the first major event in the Williamite War in Ireland. The siege was preceded by a first attempt against the town by Jacobite forces on 7 December 1688 that was foiled when 13 apprentices shut the gates. This was an act of rebellion against James II. Subject: RE: Any December Songs? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 25 Nov 21 - 10:45 AM Another beautiful song from Graeme Miles which mentions December: copied from another thread: WHEN THE SNOWS OF WINTER FALL (Graeme Miles) My yard is high with wood now, my cellar deep with coal, My windows are well battened; I’ve sealed each crack and hole, When the storms and winds come raging, I’ll not be touched at all, For I’ll be well protected, when the snows of winter fall. My sheep still wander freely, upon the lonely fell, In the field my horse is grazing, and my cattle feed as well, But come the bleak December, with its rain and sleet and squall, They’ll be safely penned and stabled, when the snows of winter fall. I look out from my doorway, to the trees on yonder rise, Soon the leaves will turn to yellow as the summer fades and dies, I’ll put on my coat of leather, and my love will don her shawl, How close we’ll draw together, when the snows of winter fall. Through the bitter cold and darkness, our hopes we will keep high, For we know the warmth of summer will come back by and by, Then we’ll walk into the sunshine wearing neither coat nor shawl, And together we will listen just to hear the cuckoo call. I am not a man of riches; I have little that is new, Some livestock and some chattels, amount to very few, But my love is here beside me; I need nothing more at all, She will give her love and comfort, when the snows of winter fall. My yard is high with wood now, my cellar deep with coal, My windows are well battened; I’ve sealed each crack and hole, When the storms and winds come raging, I’ll not be touched at all, For I’ll be well protected, when the snows of winter fall. |

Subject: RE: Any December Songs? From: Levana Taylor Date: 03 Dec 21 - 05:28 AM THE PERFECT FIELDS OF FREDERICKSBURG by Larry Kaplan The mower cuts the lower field, The grass grows slow this year. Still, every week, all summer long I see that mower here. Around the fields of Fredericksburg, In this fair morning light, A place we call a monument Straight lines up Marye's Heights. A mile further down this hill, The river Burnside crossed, Who razed this town clear to the ground, Then every soldier lost. The engine drones, the mower slows Where young boys stood in fear. It stops for time to clean the blades Then slowly disappears. The broken walls, the soldiers' calls, The frightened guns are gone. Still, shops that sell the souvenirs Say, "Choose which side you're on." And children search for evidence To prove a war was here. And perfect fields of Fredericksburg Hide blood and bones, and tears. YouTube |

Subject: RE: Any December Songs? From: Levana Taylor Date: 03 Dec 21 - 01:13 PM KITCHEN DANCE by Larry Kaplan Was a lonely old night; longest night of the year. Biggest moon in the sky; biggest moon in ten years. There's a chill in the air; hear the wind in the trees. Says it's just another winter night. He doesn't mind. He says, "It suits me." Come a bump on the door, then a snap of the wind. But there hasn't been a single soul come calling here since I don't know when. Put the coffee pot down; better turn into bed. There ain't nothing like a little sleep To get these devils out of your head. CHORUS (after each verse): It's a lonely night; he could use a few songs. Needs a banjo and a fiddle, and a little tune that isn't too long. Dancing in the kitchen; talking 'bout the fishing last June. Flirting with the ladies. Would you take a look at that moon! In a minute or two he was deep in a sleep; But there were tunes in his ear and the music was sweet. Then he heard a voice call, "Roll the carpet back now. Put the chairs in the corner. If you want to dance, We're starting right now." There was singing all night; how that fiddle bow flew! Kids on the stairs, folks alone and in pairs; not a soul there he knew. Won't you come out tonight? Take a turn on the floor. So they spun him 'round a little, Then he spun himself around a bit more. Then the music grew dim; then they all disappeared. He sat up with a start. Where's the music he hears? Throws open the door; just a little new snow. Fire in the fireplace; it must have started minutes ago. Sun up in the trees. There ain't nobody there. But there's rosin on the table, and he can't remember moving them chairs. What a curious dream; what a wonderful night! Well, the winter gets long, but he's got a new song, And the moon is still bright. YouTube |

You’d better beware, you’d better be good,
He’ll call you a pink, he’ll call you a red,
He knows when you’re subversive, he knows each move you make;
So you’d better play safe, don’t talk and don’t read,
If you’ve got a book whose cover is red,
If you go to church to pray or to wed,
Now if you are a teacher and you want to get ahead,
So, you’d better play safe, don’t talk and don’t read,
Be careful who your friends are, be careful what you say.
So, get rid of your brains and you’ll never go wrong, |

The Treaty lies before him, Michael Collins adds his name. There's a darker time upon the land, who will bear the load? An awkward hero in an armoured car on an Irish country road. They met in Edinburgh for the last time on 6th December 1791. She was then about to set sail for Jamaica in the hope of achieving reconciliation with her husband (a hope that was not to be realized). On 27th December, Burns sent her 'Ae Fond Kiss' from Dumfries, a song so genuine in its resigned passion that it makes the drawing-room songs of 'sensibility' he had previously written for her seem artificial and insignificant. Sir Walter Scott thought that 'Ae Fond Kiss' contained the 'essence of a thousand love tales'." as sung by Dougie MacLean Jean Redpath with Alisdair Fraser and San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers |

Subject: RE: Any December Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 31 Dec 22 - 01:12 AM 31 December 1720: Charles Edward Stuart – Bonnie Prince Charlie, the “Young Pretender” – was born in Rome. As leader of the Scottish Jacobites, he attempted to depose George II, but was finally defeated at Culloden. THE BLACKBIRD The first broadside versions of this song date to 1650, obviously referring to Charles II, who was then in exile. It wasn't safe to refer to him by name, so the allegorical "blackbird" was used. It seems also to have been used of James II, and perhaps also to his son James III. However, the title came to be most strongly associated with Bonnie Prince Charlie. After the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, the same situation arose as in 1650. It was generally not safe to speak of Charlie, so the Jacobites adopted various circumlocutions -- the "blackbird," the "moorhen," or simply "Somebody."
Moira Craig sang FLORA McDONALD’S LAMENT on her 2000 album On ae Bonny Day. She noted: The Steeleye Span version of this, PRINCE CHARLIE STUART, was one of the first songs I sang in public...it was only part of a Jacobite song Flora McDonald's Lament. It was found by John Moulden in the Kidson Collection in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, not far from where I first sang it. |

Subject: RE: Any December Songs? From: Monique Date: 15 Feb 23 - 07:17 AM EL DESEMBRE CONGELAT (Catalan) El desembre congelat confús es retira. FROZEN DECEMBER Frozen December, Sorry, withdraws. The whole world admires April, crowned with flowers, When in a garden of love A divine flower is born, Of a ro-, ro-, ro-, Of a -se, -se, -se, Of a ro-, of a -se, Of a beautiful rose, Fecund and virgin. The first father caused The dark night That overshadowed the painful sight Of the whole world; But, one midnight, The sun shines that came out Of a beauti-, beauti-, beauti-, Of a -ful, -ful, -ful, Of a beauti-, of a -ful, Of a beautiful dawn That the sky falls in love with. The month of May has blossomed, Without being yet A white lily all well groomed With a rare fragrance, That can be felt throughout the world, From the East to the West, All its, its, its, All sweet-, sweet-, sweet-, All its, all sweet-, All its sweetness And smell, hopefully. The three kings arrived With great joy, Worshiping the king of heaven In a cowshed Offering him three presents, Such as gold, myrrh, and frankincense. To the Mo-, Mo-, Mo-, To the -ther, -ther, -ther, To the Mo-, to the -ther, To the pious Mother, the Virgin Mary. With joy and love Let's celebrate the day In which the divine Lord Was born with joy If we have no other treasure Let's give him our hearts, Which is the great, great, great, That's the re-, re-, re- Which is the great, which is the re-, Which is the great refinement Of our poverty.
