Hi, everyone. Longtime Mudcatter Bob "Deckman" Nelson is in assisted living in the Pacific Northwest. His computer is the only way he can "get out" - and his computer just died. If you'd like to help buy a new computer for him, let me know by personal message or by email to [e-mail]. I guess the best thing would be to send the checks to me. I ordered one tonight from Lenovo on my credit card, and was able to get Cyber Week prices. If anyone would like to help defray the cost of $746.63, let me know. I got him a 24-inch Lenovo all-in-one because the screen on his laptop was too small for his deteriorating eyesight. I wanted a 27-inch Dell, but Dell couldn't deliver until December 30. This one should be good. I've had two Lenovos.

Joe, we've done these in the past for active Mudcatters (Art Thieme had two computers supplied over the years). We went through Dell and ordered in one instance a desktop, in the second a laptop (because of Art's decreasing mobility).

Thanks to SRS and Cool Beans. I could use a few more donations, because right now I'm paying 90% of the cost. Bob received his computer Thursday, and he has it up and running, and he's thrilled. I got him a 24-inch Lenovo all-in-one to replace his dead laptop, because his failing vision might do well with a bigger monitor. I couldn't get the 27-inch Dell because it wasn't available until the week after Christmas.

I want to make this low-key and want to avoid GoFundMe and other commercial concerns, but I could use some help. If you'd like to help, send me a personal message or email me, [e-mail] and I'll tell you where to send a check or PayPal (I don't reveal these things in a public forum).

Whatever the case, Bob has the computer and he's thrilled, and that's the main thing. We did this a few years ago for Art Thieme, and it was a wonderful thing to do.

Yes, Helen, thank you very much. Sorry to be late to respond. We had a snowstorm and power outage here in Northern California, so I was without a computer for several days. We still won't have an oven for at least a week. It's beautiful here, but a bit rugged at times. Happy Christmas, and thank you very much.

And thank you Bob for your lovely words about the Mudcat family, and for all the work you have done to preserve the folk archive. As a now retired ex-librarian, I commend you for that. I've been a loyal Mudcatter for just about 25 years now, so everything Mudcat means a lot to me.

I think this informal system worked pretty well for a small fundraiser like this, and I didn't have to share any of the donations with Gofundme or something like that.
