I found this remarkable Breton tour (round dance song), with its actual feminism, on the album Trois Petits Oiseaux Il Y A, where it's sung and danced by Charles Quimbert, Roland Brou, & Mathieu Hamon.

Notes on the transcription: The repeat of each phrase is sung by the chorus. The end of one phrase and the pickup note of the next overlap, so where, for ease of notation, I only indicated the final note being sustained for half a measure, it actually lasts the whole measure.

TRANSLATION

My father he did marry me
The sun's about to set, the moon's about to rise   (repeat couplet)
The sun's about to set, the moon's about to rise
We'll all say goodnight and then go our ways   (repeat couplet)

My father he did marry me
To a man who displeased me
To the fair I had him go
Nothing did he bring me home
But a stick from an apple tree
Which he meant to use for beating me
My right side first he'll make sting
Then my left side following
If you beat me I'll leave home
To dance in the woods I will go
And teach all the young girls to do so

You can hear the song sung here. It's the same tune as "J'entends le loup, le renard et la belette/ La jument de Michao".
A slightly different version (lyrics)

Thanks for sharing - definitely a remarkable little song. Le loup, le renard et la belette is one of my favourite tunes too.

Thank you, Monique!

Translation of the alternate version:

My father means to marry me
To an old man he's given me
Who has not a penny to spare
When he goes to the market or the fair
Never a thing does he bring me
But a stick from an apple tree
If he beats me I'll run away
I'll go down to the woods to play
With the boys from the school
They'll teach me and I'll teach them too
The game of cards, the game of dice
The game of love after supper time

I'm starting to get into the flow of doggerel here. How's this for the first version:

My father he did marry me
To a man who displeased me
I did send him to the fair
He brought nothing back from there
But a stick from an apple tree
With which he means to batter me
First my right side he will strike
Then my left side alike
If you beat me, I'll run away
I'll go dance in the woods all day
And teach all the young girls the same way!

Here is the alternate version in case the link would no longer work. I fixed a few things.

MON PÈRE IL VEUT M'Y MARIER (SOLEIL VA S' COUCHER)

There's a slightly different version on Le Chant Gallo in which the stick is from a chestnut tree. You can also find the score on page 24 of this document. Btw, the song must be somewhat old because "écoliers" here doesn't mean "school boys" but "college students" (Cf. François Villon).

Rough translation

My father married me off
To a spinster
Her nose was on sideways
Her cheeks were withered
Her chin was surly
Her hip was out of its socket
Thin as a sheet of paper
She seemed ok to me!

The contrast between the bachelor's version and the spinster's version is a perfect demonstration of the old feminist saying "men are afraid women will laugh at them; women are afraid men will kill them".
The woman's afraid this new husband will beat her, and plans to run away. The man is displeased with this new husband's looks.
By the way, if he's going to beat her with an apple branch he'll be disappointed; not good beating material, applewood. It breaks.

If anybody can transcribe all the commentary between the verses in the Frères Jacques one...? I can't get any of it and the google did not know. Or I didn't ask right.

Another "malmariée" song with a couple of twists is "L'ivrogne pilier du cabaret," from Québec -- hear it here, sung by André Marchand on his album L'Oranger. And here are the lyrics and the translation provided in the liner notes:

L'IVROGNE PILIER DU CABARET
As recorded by André Marchand

Maudits enfants, maudits cochons d'enfants,

THE WIFE OF A DRUNKEN SOLDIER There once was a wife, a soldier's wife. (twice) Every night she would go from tavern to tavern searching for her husband, Rosalie, with a lantern. Good evening madam, is my husband here? Go up, go way upstairs to the highest room. You'll find him in bed, Rosalie, with the servant. Good evening drunkard, king of the tavern. You spend all that you have living it up, and your little children, Rosalie, they have nothing at all. Oh, my wife, go away from here. Let me have fun in this place with all of my friends, Rosalie, and no one scolds me here. The poor wife goes home in tears. Cry, cry my children, you no longer have a father. I found him in bed, Rosalie, with someone else's mother. Oh, mother, don't say that. We know all too well that we have a father who loves good wine, Rosalie, and we'll do the same. Cursed children, beastly children, screamed the mother angrily. You will all he unfaithful, Rosalie, like your father was.

And here is a more lachrymose one from Cape Breton Island, which I have on a 1990 cassette by the group Les Habitants. I find it interesting because the language (at least most of it) is "Old France" but the waltz-like tune, and especially the guitar accompaniment and harmony the group gave it, is more "country." The translation is my own.

J'AI UN MÉNAGE
As recorded by Les Habitants

(Repeat each couplet)

– Mais pourquoi donc d'jeunes hommes venaient tous me chercher

I must tend to my house and care for my children; my husband is drinking and spending everything he has. Here he is coming home growling; the baby in the cradle wakes crying. Rock the cradle, ladies, for that's your trade, the trade of ladies when they're married. Refrain: The young woman began rocking the cradle, shedding tears and longing for the good times of her past.
"When I was a single girl in my father's house, I had nothing to do but stroll about." "When you were a single girl in your father's house, if you had it so good, you should have stayed there." "But why, then, did young men all come courting me, wanting to fight all the others who wanted to marry me?"
Refrain: The young woman began rocking the cradle, shedding tears and longing for the good times of her past.

"Vous serez tous cocus comme le fut votre père" (no circumflex on "fut", it's indicative past tense, not subjunctive) means "You'll all be cuckolds, like your father was." So she was unfaithful too.

That's what I figured... but then I thought maybe it was some unique way of using the word in Canada which the person doing the booklet translation knew?

I think, though, that the translator did make a mistake. The sense of humor in that song strikes me as very Quebecois -- the comic songs there very often feature drunken men who make great asses of themselves, and who are generally cuckolded too.
