Cecil Sharp is known as the godfather of English folk music. In a bid to preserve the English folk song at the turn of the twentieth century, when many in the musical world didn't believe England had a musical tradition of its own, he collected and memorialised thousands of traditional English folk songs from rural communities in England. However, less is known about the people he collected these songs from. FOLK is a new play at Hampstead Theatre in London written by Nell Leyshon, the British dramatist and novelist born in Glastonbury, Somerset. She tells us the true story of Louie Hooper and Lucy White, two half-sisters from Somerset who Cecil Sharp collected hundreds of songs from. |

"Cracking biscuit that!" he'd enthuse after every track. It became a catchphrase in our house for a while. |

On The Road - Different Musical Directions Maddy Prior and daughter Rose Kemp discuss their totally different musical journeys. Maddy Prior has been the lead singer of Steeleye Span since they formed in 1969. Since then the band has had dozens of members, some have left for good, some have left and re-joined, Maddy herself, who is still with Steeleye, describes it as a 'bus' with people jumping on and off. In the first of two programmes, Maddy and her daughter Rose Kemp discuss how music has taken them in different directions. Whereas Maddy is at the very heart of the folk and traditional music establishment, Rose is a major artist in the doom and drone metal scene, the slower heavier take on heavy metal. Together Maddy and Rose discuss their music and how it was they have followed such different musical paths. Specially for this series, Rose and Maddy have composed and recorded brand new, original songs alongside artists, especially selected by the other. Rose has linked up with Bellowhead front man Jon Boden to record a song she has written to explore the difficult subject of rape in marriage while Maddy collaborated with Dylan Carlson, part of the Seattle music scene and head of the metal band Earth. You may have a stereotypical image of a woman in a floaty dress walking through a flower meadow - but we want to challenge that. From protest songs and feminist anthems - it's not all whimsy in the world of folk. Emma talks to Peggy Seeger who has enjoyed six decades of success with her music. Peggy was married to the singer Ewen McColl. He wrote the song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" for her. Together they revitalised the British Folk Scene during the 50s and 60s, working on the BBC Radio Ballads; ground-breaking documentaries - which wove a story from the words of real people working in the mining and fishing industry or building the M1 motorway with sound effects, and songs. Now 86 years old, Peggy's own songs have become anthems for feminists, anti-nuclear campaigners and those fighting for social justice. Emma examines the uncomfortable elements of folk music, and how artists are finding ways of reinterpreting old songs, or writing new ones to represent missing narratives and stories. I am enjoying Caroline Davison's blog on the first year of Vaughan Williams's listening journey into folk song - from the first song he collected in December 1903 (‘Bushes and Briars’) to the moment he heard ‘The Captain’s Apprentice’ in January 1905.
