Sharp, then principal of the Hampstead Conservatoire of Music, had come to visit the village curate, Charles Marson. It was in Hambridge, courtesy of Marson’s gardener, John England, that he first heard an old song that was new to him, Seeds of Love. Telegraph

BBC Radio 4 Friday 7 January 2021 10:00am Woman's Hour

Cecil Sharp in Somerset; Identity and Englishness - with archive recording of Louie Hooper from 1942!

Cecil Sharp is known as the godfather of English folk music. In a bid to preserve the English folk song at the turn of the twentieth century, when many in the musical world didn't believe England had a musical tradition of its own, he collected and memorialised thousands of traditional English folk songs from rural communities in England. However, less is known about the people he collected these songs from.

FOLK is a new play at Hampstead Theatre in London written by Nell Leyshon, the British dramatist and novelist born in Glastonbury, Somerset. She tells us the true story of Louie Hooper and Lucy White, two half-sisters from Somerset who Cecil Sharp collected hundreds of songs from.

This, on the BBC World Service, was good
Music that survived the Nazis
There is a common misconception that music under the Nazis was either ‘Degenerate Music’ to be suppressed or propaganda music that was officially sanctioned. Historian Shirli Gilbert shows that there was a wealth of different music-making during this period, including secret sessions by Jewish musicians and others, that managed to evade official scrutiny.

In this first episode, she explores the music of the Jewish Culture League, as well as the work of Lukraphon and Semer, two Jewish record labels active at this time. This includes a huge range of works recorded in Nazi Germany, from orchestral pieces to cabaret songs to religious singing of enormous beauty.
Lots of excerpts from, and accounts of, artists who were recorded on those record labels, two of whom I looked up on YouTube

Sam Willis is an actual guitar-playing historian. He took his guitar on his re-enactment of Powell's journey down the Colorado and through the Grand Canyon, which is worth watching.

The highwaymen series is worth watching too, but this folk music interval doesn't add to it IMO.

Jo is Editor of Butcher's Dog Poetry Magazine and her first collection of poems Outlandish is published this year by Bloodaxe. Among her choices of poetry requests are John Clare's To The Snipe, Preface from Swims by Elizabeth Jane Burnett and Nightingales by fellow Romany poet David Morley.

It finished with Queen Caroline Hughes singing Sheep Crook and Black Dog.

Looking through the FAQ I see that geo-blocking in get_iplayer can be avoided by using lower bitrate streams
https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/faq#nonuk
Not much good for TV but 96k radio should sound OK. You may be able to specify that in the BBC Sounds app itself.

After dillient research I have failed to find a connection between Biscuithead and the Biscuit Badgers, as featured by Genevieve, and Half Man Half Biscuit other than the twice-cooked commestible itself - Bicciepedia etc.

I remember driving down the M6 with the children in the back, listening to Radio Stoke on Trent to get the traffic news, and the 'disk jockey' kept referring to CDs - they were probably rather novel at that time - as biscuits. "Cracking biscuit that!" he'd enthuse after every track. It became a catchphrase in our house for a while.

Glad to hear there are other keen fans of Genevieve Tudor's show here, and I hope Reinhard has found access. My second favourite is the always unexpected Oota Da Cans, which is an hour a month from Shetland.

I see BBC Radio 2's new project 21st Century Folk, based in the north-east of England, hasn't been mentioned on this thread yet so here's a link:

https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/2022/21st-century-folk

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/12DGLdmk0fbwjF8M9V04kwR/21st-century-folk

"Radio 2 is always looking for ways to tell stories, and 21st Century Folk is a creatively ambitious and hugely exciting new endeavour. Following in the tradition of the Radio Ballads, I’m proud that in the BBC’s centenary year we will be telling the real life stories of our listeners in the North East of England, using original music to create a lasting legacy of their experiences."

"BBC Radio 2, in partnership with BBC Local Radio, launches 21st Century Folk, an ambitious initiative to capture the essence of life in the North East of England in 2022 - the BBC’s centenary year – through the prism of folk songs, and offering people from the region the opportunity to have a song written about their life."

"Anyone (aged over 18 years) living in the North East of England is invited to get in touch, tell us about their day to day life – or an inspiring person they know – and share stories and anecdotes about doing the sorts of job that make the country tick in 2022, whether a teacher, nurse, delivery driver, junior football coach, scientist, coffee shop barista, student, shop worker or anything else that defines the UK in these shifting times. In March, five participants will be selected from all the submissions by a panel comprised of representatives from the 21st Century Folk team, Radio Newcastle, Radio Tees and a songwriter (to be announced closer to the time). Later in the Spring they will be paired with and meet the songwriters who’ll be creating the music from their stories. They and their songwriter will really get to know each other, with their meetings recorded and filmed for documentaries that will air on Radio 2 in the autumn."

On The Road - Different Musical Directions

Maddy Prior and daughter Rose Kemp discuss their totally different musical journeys.

Maddy Prior has been the lead singer of Steeleye Span since they formed in 1969. Since then the band has had dozens of members, some have left for good, some have left and re-joined, Maddy herself, who is still with Steeleye, describes it as a 'bus' with people jumping on and off.

In the first of two programmes, Maddy and her daughter Rose Kemp discuss how music has taken them in different directions.

Whereas Maddy is at the very heart of the folk and traditional music establishment, Rose is a major artist in the doom and drone metal scene, the slower heavier take on heavy metal. Together Maddy and Rose discuss their music and how it was they have followed such different musical paths.

Specially for this series, Rose and Maddy have composed and recorded brand new, original songs alongside artists, especially selected by the other.

Rose has linked up with Bellowhead front man Jon Boden to record a song she has written to explore the difficult subject of rape in marriage while Maddy collaborated with Dylan Carlson, part of the Seattle music scene and head of the metal band Earth.

Long standing fans of Maddy's and Steeleye will definitely be surprised at the way she uses her famous voice to fit the guitars of Carlson's arrangement.

Along the way, Rose and Maddy come together to discuss the world of music, feminism and misogyny in the folk world, spirituality, and how they view the world and their relationship through their different musical styles.

Thanks for that. Available on demand, but it doesn't say for how long.

Maddy's father, Allan Prior, was a scriptwriter for the BBC - he wrote 150 episodes of Z Cars! Late Night Line-Up would end the night on BBC2, and I remember the night when a young couple, Tim Hart and Maddy Prior, unexpectedly appeared.

On BBC Radio 4 this morning at 10.00

Women's Hour - Women and Folk Music

"This May bank holiday Emma looks at women and the tradition of folk music. You may have a stereotypical image of a woman in a floaty dress walking through a flower meadow - but we want to challenge that. From protest songs and feminist anthems - it's not all whimsy in the world of folk.

Emma talks to Peggy Seeger who has enjoyed six decades of success with her music. Peggy was married to the singer Ewen McColl. He wrote the song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" for her. Together they revitalised the British Folk Scene during the 50s and 60s, working on the BBC Radio Ballads; ground-breaking documentaries - which wove a story from the words of real people working in the mining and fishing industry or building the M1 motorway with sound effects, and songs. Now 86 years old, Peggy's own songs have become anthems for feminists, anti-nuclear campaigners and those fighting for social justice.

Emma examines the uncomfortable elements of folk music, and how artists are finding ways of reinterpreting old songs, or writing new ones to represent missing narratives and stories. Who were the female tradition-bearers, writers and performers and the often forgotten collectors - those who would record and notate traditional songs handed down orally from generation to generation? And what is being done to improve the gender equality and diversity in folk music?"

It will be available to listen to shortly after broadcast.

The Composer of the Week on Radio 3 this week has been Vaughan Williams, always of interest to us folk aficionados (I refuse to call us "folkies!").

The Captain's Apprentice: Ralph Vaughan Williams and the Story of a Folk Song by Caroline Davison will be published by Chatto & Windus in August 2022, the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams's birth.

I am enjoying Caroline Davison's blog on the first year of Vaughan Williams's listening journey into folk song - from the first song he collected in December 1903 (‘Bushes and Briars’) to the moment he heard ‘The Captain’s Apprentice’ in January 1905.

We have even been for lunch at the Olde Dog at Herongate/Little Burstead/East Horndon. The blog can be found here: Ralph Vaughan Williams's Journey into Folk substack
