I really enjoyed the 4-5 of his films I've seen. He managed to portray his characters as not merely black men succeed in a white man's world, but also as human beings confronting life AS humans.

If only skin color could be just a bit of data instead of something to pre-judge.

Sidney Poitier

I always enjoyed his films.

In fact, on reflection, having seen him in To Sir With Love when I was in first year of high school and not worldly-wise I probably took it for granted that black people were highly respected and then became bitterly disappointed over the years when I didn't see that respect continue in movies and in real life.

Rest in peace, Sir.

I think my first film of his that I saw was "A Patch of Blue" .....

(I had no idea Helen, he had made a telemovie of "To Sir, With Love II" in '96 - maybe it never made it Down Under to Oz TV??)

I saw him in the screen adaption of "A Raisin in the Sun" when I was about 10 and became a lifelong fan, the power of that performance still resonates with me.

I understand that Sidney Poitier wasn't much of a singer. Did he sing Jester Hairston's "Amen" in Lilies of the Field or was the singing dubbed?

Wikipedia says the singing of "Amen" was dubbed by the songwriter, Jester Hairston himself.
