Subject: Lyr Add: Irish Fisherman Scare Off Russians -song From: GUEST,Hooly O'Tannenbaum Date: 01 Feb 22 - 01:06 AM Irish Fisherman Scare Off Russian Military Invading Irish fishing grounds? On St Bridget's Day, traditionally the start of the fishing season in Ireland? How Irish Fishermen Took on the Russian Fleet and Won (condensed from) https://www.defenseone.com/ideas/2022/01/how-irish-fishermen-took-russian-fleet-and-won/361377/ When Russia announced its intention to conduct a naval exercise off the coast of Ireland, Irish fishermen came up with a deterrent so simple and so powerful that the Russian navy moved the exercise. The government of Ireland passed the word that starting on Feb. 3, Russia would hold a naval exercise in Ireland’s exclusive economic zone. Irish officials declared the exercise “not welcome and not wanted,” ...despite continuing to plead with Russia to move the exercise – noting, for example, the area’s unique marine wildlife – the Irish government got nowhere. Russia’s ambassador to Ireland, Yuri Filatov, said last week, “There is nothing to be disturbed, concerned, or anguished about and I have...explained that to our Irish colleagues.” Ireland’s fishermen stand to lose one million tons of fish, said Patrick Murphy, chief executive of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation. “This is the livelihoods of fishermen and fishing families all around the coastline here. It’s our waters.” Murphy said “Our boats will be going out to that area on the first of February to go fishing,” he told Politico on Jan. 25. “When one boat needs to return to port, another will head out so there is a continuous presence on the water. If that is in proximity to where the [military] exercise is going, we are expecting that the Russian naval services abide by the anti-collision regulations.” By constantly having their boats in the exercise waters, the fishermen would peacefully prevent the Russians from conducting the exercise. What Shall We Do With The Russian Sailors? The air to "What Shall We do With a Drunken Sailor" is from a traditional Irish dance tune, writes seaman Stan Hugill (Shanties of the Seven Seas,1994, p109.) What shall we do with the Russian sailors What shall we do with the Russian sailors What shall we do with the Russian sailors Early in the morning Way hay and away they scatter Way hay and away they scatter Way hay and away they scatter Early in the morning Burn a yellow candle to St Bridget Conjure up the ghost of Dan O’Connell Sing The Foggy Dew till they all start weeping Sing Danny Boy till they all start heaving Scare ‘em with a herring till they’re wet and dripping Slap ’ em with a mackerel till they pack their bags up Cod ‘em with a cod till they all run screaming Call a moratorium and send 'em packing Have a pint of Guinness with the Irish sailors Buy another round for Patrick Murphy Yo ho, Hooly O'Tannenbaum |

They then went to the Russian Embassy and the outcome was that the Russians moved their wargames well away from the prized fishing grounds, thus demonstrating just what a lot of imbeciles inhabit Leinster House. To keep this a musical thread, could I remind you of Joe Heaney's wonderful song 'Morrissey and the Russian sailor', another instance of the Irish getting the better of the Russians.... |
