Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gypsy Davey (Furey Brothers) From: Helen Date: 15 Mar 22 - 10:22 PM Ok, here are the lyrics I found for the Steeleye Span version of this song, similar but not the same as the version by The Fureys: Steeleye Span sing Black Jack Davy Late last night when the squire came home Enquiring for his lady, Some denied and some replied, “She's gone with the Black Jack Davy.” “Go saddle to me the bonny brown steed For the grey was never so speedy. I'll ride all day and I'll ride all night Till I catch that Black Jack Davy.” Chorus (repeated after each verse): He rode up hills and he rode down dales Over many a wild high mountain, And they did say that saw him go, “Black Jack Davy he is hunting.” He rode east and he rode west All in the morning early Until he spied his lady fair, Cold and wet and weary. “Why did you leave your house and land? Why did you leave your baby? Why did you leave your own wedded lord To go with the Black Jack Davy?” “What care I for your goose feather bed With the sheets turned down so bravely? Well I may sleep on the cold hard ground Along with the Black Jack Davy. “Then I'll kick off my high healed shoes Made of the Spanish leather, And I'll put on my lowland brogues And skip it o'er the heather.” There are a lot of other similar-but-not-the-same versions of the song on that page as performed by different artists. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gypsy Davey (Furey Brothers) From: Helen Date: 16 Mar 22 - 03:17 PM One of the sites I looked at earlier in the month stated that there are over 120 versions of the song. I was hoping that Joe Offer may have kept a copy of the final version we all worked out based on the version by The Fureys as posted by GUEST,Einar McCarthy. I suspect we might have to re-do our homework because the dog must have ate it all up. :-) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gypsy Davey (Furey Brothers) From: Helen Date: 16 Mar 22 - 03:48 PM Ok, here it is according to how I hear it on the video, and with the suggestions I think I remembered from Joe. My suggestions have an asterix either side e.g. *Rattle*. Verse 1: Twas late in the night when the squire came home Inquiring for his lady The servants all replied she`s gone She's away with the Gypsy Davey Chorus: *Rattle* for the Gypsy, Gypsy, *Rattle* for the Gypsy Davey [Note: I am fairly confident that the singer is pronouncing "rattle" and also in some of my searches the song title is referred to as "Rattle for the Gypsy". Also, my last posting on the thread before it went to data-heaven with the site-crash angels was that I am really not sure what the phrase "rattle for the Gypsy" means and that maybe because I am in Australia I am missing the context. Is it a term related to hunting perhaps?] Verse 2: Saddle me me old gray mare for the *brown* she is not speedy I´ll ride all night, *and I'll* ride all day, and *I'll overtake my lady* [Note: "me old gray mare" - in this instance "me" is the pronunciation of "my"] Verse 3: So he rode all night, he rode all day, he overtook *his* lady He rode all night, he rode all day, *yes* he overtook the *fair* lady Verse 4: Oh come back me dearest dear *and it's* oh come back me honey Oh come back me dearest dear And I´ll give you all of my money Verse 5: I´ll not come back me dearest dear I´ll not come back me honey *I'll not* come back me dearest dear for you and all of your money Verse 6: Oh take off the snow *white* gloves *that's* made of Spanish leather Oh take off the snow white gloves and *bid* farewell forever Verse 7: So she's took off them snow white gloves that's made of the Spanish leather oh she´s took off them snow white gloves and *bid* farewell forever ["them" in this context is a fairly common term in some areas meaning "those"] Verse 8: Last night *I* slept in a warm feather bed *with the sheets and the blankets o'er me, oh but the [at? or by?] night *I'm lying* [??} in the cold cold ground in the arms of me Lovely Gypsy oh {Note: "o'er" is "over" but pronounced "or" without the "v" sound.] If these suggested changes seem ok I'll rewrite it without the asterixes etc for a clear copy. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gypsy Davey (Furey Brothers) From: Helen Date: 16 Mar 22 - 03:54 PM *with the sheets and the blankets o'er me, oh* [I forgot the asterix at the end of that line.] but the [at? or by?] night *I'm lying* [??} *on*? the cold cold ground - not "in" which would mean she is dead. That line confused me when I first read it because she is saying she is happy and staying with the Gypsy, so why would she be dead unless her poor, unhappy husband shot her? But no, she's alive and happy. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gypsy Davey (Furey Brothers) From: Helen Date: 29 Jul 22 - 05:33 AM A friend from Ireland sent a few CD's out to our group of musical friends and the first tune I am listening to is The Two William Davises on an album called Harp to Heart by a harper called Kathleen Loughnane. I realised that some parts of the tune remind me of the version of Gypsy Davey by The Furey Brothers. The note under the video I linked to says: "In some quarters Turlough O'Carolan is credited with composing this tune, while other sources reckon it's a much older tune & believe that Carolan just put words to this tune." The liner notes to the tune in Kathleen Loughnane's album are: "There are various versions of this tune carried in the aural tradition both here [in Ireland] and in Scotland. As an O'Carolan tune this is known as Planxty Davis, but it would seem that it was composed by his predecessor, harper-composer Thomas Connellan, from County Sligo. In Scotland, where Connellan spent some years, it is known as The Battle of Killeckrankie." So, is it just for me that listening to The Two William Davises sounds similar to Gypsy Davey, or can other people hear it too? An enquiring mind - or maybe a mind which has lost its faculties - would really like your thoughts on this. :-) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Discussion: Gypsy Davey (Furey Brothers) From: Helen Date: 29 Jul 22 - 06:20 PM That's all right, Joe. I think we retrieved most of the thread from wetware-memory. LOL |
Subject: RE: Lyr Discussion: Gypsy Davey (Furey Brothers) From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Jul 22 - 07:15 PM I learned a lot in this recent crash. I was able to retried a lot of threads - but if a thread had been posted to before I got to the Google Cache, the cache was updated and the messages disappeared. Library of Congress and archive.org didn't have scans of Mudcat from just before the crash, so they couldn't help. But I got a lot from the Google Cache. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Discussion: Gypsy Davey (Furey Brothers) From: Helen Date: 29 Jul 22 - 08:20 PM You're worth more money, Joe. Do you want me to tell Max that? This was a fairly recent thread started not long before the Great Crash of '22 so I think we remembered a lot of it ourselves and re-posted it. Lucky! [Lucky we don't suffer from short-term memory loss - so far.] |
Subject: RE: Lyr Discussion: Gypsy Davey (Furey Brothers) From: Helen Date: 03 Aug 22 - 05:38 PM "Oh take off them snow white gloves" Yep. Sounds right to me. |
