Subject: Lyr Add: Russian Major General
From: Joe Offer
Date: 09 May 22 - 07:06 PM

We have a song about songs from Ukraine, but I think that concentrates on Ukrainian songs. This one didn't fit, but it's clever.

Russian Major-General lyrics by Andrej Nkv (Twitter):

I am the very model of a Russian Major General
My standing in the battlefield is growing quite untenable
My forces, though equipped and given orders unequivocal
Did not expect the fight to be remotely this reciprocal

I used to have a tank brigade but now I have lost several
My fresh assaults are faltering with battleplans extemporal
I can't recover vehicles but farmers in a tractor can
It's all becoming rather reminiscent of Afghanistan

My ordnance is the best but only half my missiles make it there
I would have thought by now that we would be controllers of the air
But at the rate the snipers work my time here is ephemeral
I am the very model of a Russian Major General

This song refers to the Ukraine war...

Catch -2022
Words: F. the Ineffable                Tune: Good King Wenceslaus

Back in 1970, Alvin Toffler published a book called Future Shock. He predicted a time in which change began to happen so rapidly that no one could keep up, making everyone feel disoriented and crazy…

On the northern California coast, we're now worried again about drought and fires.

Taoist scholar Ken Rose says the creation of all forms through the interplay of yin and yang was discovered by sages watching the progression of sun and shadow on a hill. This past fortnight the sun and clouds and rain have been shifting as rapidly as covid protocols.

I hung up my raincoat and I toweled down my hat
Wiped my glasses on my pants and swept the yoga mat.
Watching sodden robins through the splattered windowpane,
Ground my teeth and thanked the heavens for the gift of rain.

It’s too wet to go outside, so I’ll sit here alone
Watching one more 1980s movie on my phone
People singing, dancing, drinking whiskey from a flask,
Making war and making love and no one wears a mask.

Now the brilliant sun appears. I go out on the deck
Feel the golden glow upon my belly and my neck,
Till fire sirens fill the air, and I obsess about
My go-bag, Russia and Ukraine, the fires and drought.

Then the clouds drift overhead and bless us with more rain.
Puddles in my walking shoes, water on the brain.
Present Shock, I call it, while I’m wringing out my socks,
Catch-2022, the year of plague and paradox.

John McCutcheon and Tom Paxton - "UKRAINIAN NOW"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSwxoJHJ4EI&t=112s :

Apr 29, 2022 Tom Paxton and John McCutcheon have written a heartfelt, stirring song, "Ukrainian Now," that touches us all. Noel Paul Stookey edited this beautiful video that includes the voices of Peter Yarrow, Bill Miller, Tret Fure, Holly Near, Emma's Revolution, Rebel Voices, Crys Matthews, Carrie Newcomer, Christine Lavin and Joe Jencks - whose playing of the electric bouzouki adds a haunting compliment to the piano of McCutcheon.

The lyrics scroll across the screen and the sheet music is at the end. Please share far and wide. As Holly says at the video's conclusion, "We are all Ukrainian, now..."

Efim Chorny is the second performer on the video at https://www.facebook.com/klezmerinst/videos/1018818232074534/. He sings Zay Gebentsht, Ukrayne at the end of his performance slot.

Lisa Gutkin introduces Efim Chorny and S. Ghergus at about 8 min. Efim sings three songs, and Zay Gebentsht, Ukrayne is about 15 min. from the start of the video.

a couple of corrections to transliterated spelling of lyrics of Zay Gebentsht, Ukrayne:
"Kroyvim " instead "KroyvEm" and "Tfile" instead "TfileS".
