There is lots of music in Brigadoon, too.

Brigadoon (film)

"....Brigadoon, a miraculously blessed village that rises out of the mists every hundred years for only a day. (This was done so that the village would never be changed or destroyed by the outside world.)"

You ought to hear a Glaswegian Scot slagging off Brigadoon.
Their Scottish tongues can draw blood . . .

Brigadoon is Lerner and Lowe, not really Scots. Glockamorra is really Harburg and Lane (nee Levy) and not Irish. Edelweiss is Rogers and Hammerstein, not German. Mudcat is a long way from Broadway.

Does anyone know if the legend is really Scottish?

In my opinion, the original black & white movie with Findlay Currie was passable however, the techicolor Gene Kelly re-make with all the on-set studio scenery was absolutely appalling.
I must admit, I do like the song "The Heather On The Hill" even though it's 100% Tin-Pan-Alley and possibly as far away from Scottish trad. music as you can get.

So, getting back to the first post on this thread: has anyone discovered the secret to accessing the magic portal to Mudcat while it is yo-yo-ing in and out of the real world?

I often get Brigadoon (Lerner and Lowe) confused with Finian's Rainbow (Harburg & Lane). I enjoy both.

Here are the Wikipedia descriptions:
Brigadoon (1947) features two American tourists who stumble upon Brigadoon, a mysterious Scottish village that appears for only one day every 100 years. Tommy, one of the tourists, falls in love with Fiona, a young woman from Brigadoon. Hit songs from this musical were "I'll Go Home With Bonnie Jean," "The Heather on the Hill," and "Almost Like Being in Love."

In Finian's Rainbow (1947), an elderly Irishman, Finian McLonergan, moves to the southern United States with his daughter Sharon, to bury a stolen pot of gold near Fort Knox, in the mistaken belief that it will grow. Og, a leprechaun, follows them, desperate to recover his treasure before the loss of it turns him permanently human. Complications arise when a bigoted and corrupt U.S. senator gets involved, and when wishes are made inadvertently over the hidden crock. The Irish-tinged music score includes gospel and R&B influences. The hit song from this musical was "How Are Things in Glocca Morra."

I was hoping we could use the Mudcat Facebook page at times when Mudcat is down, but apparently that could not be negotiated.

If you need something, email me, joe@mudcat.org - I'll do my best to find the information for you. There is an admin "back door," but Max has asked us not to use that unless it's for admin purposes. And it hasn't been working most of the time lately, anyhow. But I'm pretty good at finding stuff quickly - but it is much harder when Mudcat is down.

Stringsinger asked if Brigadoon is a real thing.
Well ...
blame composer Frederick "Fritz" Loewe.
He swiped the story from a German-language Erzählung
about a highland town in the misty mountains.

So instead of Germany, we have the highlands of Scotland,
by the time Alan Jay Lerner is done with it.

Stringsinger asks "Does anyone know if the legend is really Scottish?"

There are several legends in Ireland about islands which only appear out of the mist every 7 (or other number) years. Some of these islands are now easily apparent, for instance Tory Island since Colm Cille (Dove of the Church, St Columba) threw his staff on to the island (according to legend). I expect Scotland has similar tales.

And Joan F, I love your thread title. I knew immediately what it referred to.

i heard that the only bits of Scottish music known to the composers were "Annie Laurie" and "Loch Lomond", but couldn't bear to listen to the thing to hear if this were at all evident.

Anybody think a companion Reddit sub would work?

I'm on Reddit but don't really know what it's like to moderate a sub. If it isn't too much of a pain in the arse I'd consider starting one.

What would such a 'companion' site be for?
What moderation do you expect would be required?
Anonymous posting?

Reddit has different flavours of antisocial behaviour from other forums. Moderators are needed. Its anonymity culture is infuriating but you can work round it.

Simply having somewhere to ask "is Mudcat likely to be back up in the next few days?" Would be handy. And Reddit lets you upload media files, albeit not as conveniently as Facebook (has to be in a basenote).

You can ask in rec.music.folk It exists already, and no moderation is required - or possible.

I don't think you'll get an informed answer, though.
