I'm gonna put this up, then go to be. My daughter is searching for words to a tune called "Johnny, Lovely Johnny" This is the title, and it is sung by Dolores Keane. We have the CD, but CANNOT get the words from it..(don't know if it's the accent or the dialect) One phrase is-"when you came to my window to steal me away" Yes, I looked in Ceolas.

Subject: Lyr Add: BANKS OF THE ROSES
From: Jeremiah McCaw
Date: 16 Jan 00 - 12:24 PM

It's in the DT under a different title. There's an alternate version listed as well. The Barra McNeils do it on one of their earlier CDs.

BANKS OF THE ROSES

On the banks of the roses, my love and I sat down
And I took out my violin to play my love a tune
In the middle of the tune, O she sighed and she said
O Johnny, lovely Johnny, Would you leave me

O when I was a young man, I heard my father say
That he'd rather see me dead and buried in the clay
Sooner than be married to any runaway
By the lovely sweet banks of the roses

O then I am no runaway and soon I'll let them know
I can take a good glass or leave it alone
And the man that doesn't like me, he can keep his daughter home
And young Johnny will go roving with another

And if ever I get married, twill be in the month of May
When the leaves they are green and the meadows they are gay
And I and my true love can sit and sport and play
On the lovely sweet banks of the roses

Subject: Lyr Add: JOHNNY LOVELY JOHNNY^^
From: Susanne (skw)
Date: 16 Jan 00 - 06:33 PM

This is what Dolores sings on 'Broken Hearted I'll Wander'. Searching for 'high walls of Derry' didn't find it in the DT so I'll post it. It seems to be a different song from the one Jeremiah McCraw posted.

The high walls of Derry look dismal and grey
And so does lovely Johnny, he is now going away
He is going to bonnie Scotland some sweetheart to see
May the high powers above send him safe home to me

Oh Johnny lovely Johnny do you mind the day
When you came to my window to steal me away
You promised you'd marry me above all female kind
Oh Johnny lovely Johnny what has altered your mind

Oh Annie lovely Annie it was all but a jest
For I never intended to make you my best
I never intended to make you my wife
Oh Annie lovely Annie, all the days of my life

The first time I met you 'tis well I do own
'Twas in my father's garden in the county Tyrone
With my white apron round us to shield out the wind
Oh Johnny lovely Johnny what has altered your mind

A bunch of blue ribbons I'll tie up and wear
And a wreath of forget-me-nots I will twine round my hair
And if ever he returns again I will greet him with joy
And I will kiss the lips of my own Johnny boy

Hope this is it. - Susanne

As a note regarding The Banks of the Roses, my grandmother sang a slightly different version that seems to be a link between this and the ones at DT 311, so I'll post another "Johnny song".

There was a thread on this a quite awhile ago & I think the version Susanne posted was in it, can't recall if there was any info on the song itself. If you can't find a song in the DT there's usually a fair short of it being buried among the threads. Barry
