Subject: Lyr Req: I am Captain O'Rourke, I am From: GUEST,Patrick N Date: 19 Jun 22 - 08:55 PM A while ago, someone came to a group sing with a silly tune about an incompetent ship's captain. He hasn't showed up since, so I can't ask him, and Google hasn't helped. The verses get gradually more ridiculous; first, he knocks over his ship's mast and it sinks. Then, he goes to sea in a colander and sinks. Finally, he pulls a cork out of Ireland and the whole island sinks. The chorus went like: Fiddlee rink-a-dink-a-doo-rye-am, I am Captain O'Rourke, I am Don't go hailing, when I'm sailing I am a fine ship's captain |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I am Captain O'Rourke, I am From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 20 Jun 22 - 03:19 AM it's sung around Sydney shanty sessions, if you're on facebook you could ask Redfern Shanty Club otherwise I'll email a member, then we can post them & everyone can enjoy the silliness. sandra hailing? bailing would be a better fit ... I can't remember what I sing, see motto of Shanty Club - if you don't know the words, SING LOUDER. |

I figured it meant something like "Don't go hailing" = don't come near me to say hello, this ship's going down. Could have been failing, bailing, whaling... who knows! |
