Subject: Obit: Grant Baynham From: John MacKenzie Date: 30 Jul 22 - 01:53 PM Grant sadly died of an heart attack a couple of days ago. He was a clever song writer, a great guitarist, and an all round good bloke. He used to attend our annual music weekends, and said that he wouldn't miss this trip to Scotland each year, and regarded it as an holiday. I have spent many happy hours in his company and he will be much missed by myself and many others. The older UK members may remember him as a regular on That's Life. |
Subject: RE: 2022 Obit: Grant Baynham From: Anne Lister Date: 31 Jul 22 - 11:37 AM He had been working for the past couple of decades with Hilary Spencer, as the duo Quicksilver. I met him on a few occasions, and each time was struck by his musicianship, humour, and warmth. Because of his warmth and friendliness I felt I knew him better than I actually did, and I am very sad to hear of his passing. Much sympathy to Hilary, and to his wife and family, and all who knew him well. The great Session in the Sky has gained another shining star, to our loss. |

Subject: RE: 2022 Obit: Grant Baynham From: GUEST,Geoff Date: 01 Aug 22 - 05:50 AM Bromsgrove Folk Festival was always glad to welcome Grant & Hilary, as we did this year. I had the honour MC-ing his set just 3 weeks ago, which I believe was his last gig performance. Echoing the above, he was a lovely warm gent with great personality and will be missed by us all. "As the good Lord gazed down on the Dun Cow that night, He allowed himself one sublime smirk… Then he gently doused Phoebus’s proud amber light And said ‘Night, night Grant Baynham. Good work." |

Subject: RE: 2022 Obit: Grant Baynham From: GUEST,David Eagle - The Young'uns Date: 12 Aug 22 - 05:26 PM Grant was a wonderful man, and a personal musical comedy hero. Subject: RE: 2022 Obit: Grant Baynham From: GUEST,C Stuart Cook Date: 22 Aug 22 - 04:49 AM I went to Grant’s funeral. A sad but joyous occasion. Conducted by his minister brother Grant contributed his own “Birmingham Song”. Family and friends contributed. What a wordsmith, what a guitarist. Wrapped up in a fantastic, generous human being. Tears to belly busting laughs, he had the mastery of it. |
Subject: RE: 2022 Obit: Grant Baynham From: GUEST,Simon Goodwin Date: 20 Jun 23 - 10:02 AM Grant was in my brother’s year at KEGS, Stourbridge. Matthew, , his younger brother, was in my year, and we were at primary school together. With Grant and Pete Arrowsmith, another great KEGS guitar finger stylist, I got my inspiration to play folk baroque fingerstyle guitar seriously. Through lunchtime meetings of the KEGS guitar club. Subsequently played with both, at the Seven Whistlers Folk Club, in Stourbridge, across the road from our school. Later kept up with Grant for many years, having guitar hangs whenever our paths crossed. Lost touch too many years ago, and am sad not to have reconnected before his passing. Great fellow, and belated condolences to Matthew, and Grant’s other nearest and dearest. Simon Goodwin |
