Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 31 Jul 22 - 03:38 PM Magnificent, a lot of tears from the Germans - built like wrestlers some of them!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: gillymor Date: 31 Jul 22 - 04:02 PM Sorry I missed it, sounds like it was a necklace match. |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 31 Jul 22 - 04:07 PM Just football - ladies kicking a leather ball around a field!! |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: gillymor Date: 31 Jul 22 - 04:52 PM "necklace match"? Heckuva match got auto-corrected. |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Steve Shaw Date: 31 Jul 22 - 05:55 PM The women have a gone long way towards changing the world. Great that England won it, of course, but the whole tournament has been amazing. Kudos! And that goal dinked over the German goalie by Ella Toone was world class! Nearly as classy as the post-match Chloe Kelly interview! |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Nigel Parsons Date: 31 Jul 22 - 06:05 PM Well done the English Ladies. I'm Welsh, but I was also cheering them on! |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Mrrzy Date: 31 Jul 22 - 06:19 PM Lionesses ate the Elf. Excellent game! |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Steve Shaw Date: 31 Jul 22 - 07:01 PM I've been avoiding (yet often failing, I admit) calling them "girls" or "ladies." I'm a long-time aficionado of the beautiful game as played by men, and I've been reflecting on the fact that I never refer to the players as "boys" or "gentlemen." At one point this evening I said to Mrs Steve that if one of our yellow-carded players got a second yellow, we'd be down to ten men. Grr. I'm getting there... |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 01 Aug 22 - 01:46 AM But can any if them make a nice coffee and walnut cake??? |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Steve Shaw Date: 01 Aug 22 - 04:01 AM Well I can play the harmonica well enough to make a CD AND I can make you a perfect carbonara. Does this help? |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: MaJoC the Filk Date: 01 Aug 22 - 04:34 AM > calling them "girls" or "ladies" How about "lassies" :-) ? I tend to use "lads" and "lassies" myself*, on the grounds that that's more age-neutral, but that may be a holdover (hangover?) from having been brugged up in Salford. * Usually not for the same people. |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: The Sandman Date: 01 Aug 22 - 04:56 AM well it is labelled a Womans football match, So the women played well, is imo better than the girls done good. |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Steve Shaw Date: 01 Aug 22 - 10:37 AM Well, Filk (I'm not typing that full thing of yours every time!), I'm a Radcliffe lad and me mam was born and bred in Salford. Lads and lasses sounds fine to me. I'm not that bothered, except that "ladies" definitely sounds wrong somehow. By the way, "lassies" always looks to me like "more than one dog called Lassie." Dunno about that though. I must say that I'm not exactly fond of "Lionesses" either. I was kind of hoping that we were moving away from things such as waitresses, comediennes, authoresses and actresses. Oh well. We have a very friendly lady postman. These things take time... |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: gillymor Date: 01 Aug 22 - 11:13 AM Whatever you call them they done good. I missed the German match but not the Swedish one with the back-heeled goal by Russo. |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Steve Shaw Date: 01 Aug 22 - 02:49 PM Yeah, the cheeky bugger! |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: The Sandman Date: 02 Aug 22 - 04:05 AM cricket commentators are not allowed to use the term batsman, they say batters. how long will it be before they cannoy say he bowled a maiden over. it was a Womans match, just call it as it is.. the women played well, if you want to use footballers bad grammar how about using text type d girls dun gude |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Steve Shaw Date: 02 Aug 22 - 07:08 AM "Batsman" is, to me, inoffensive in itself, but "batswoman" sounds awkwardly close to "Batwoman," so unlike the Daily Mail, which considers it to be woke, I'm fine with "batter." Unfortunately, you can be a batter in cricket, you can batter your cod fillet and you can batter the door down (or batter your adversary...). I'm not sure what we can do about the fielding position "third man," however... Now how are we going to get round "Women's Super League" vs Premier League," I ask myself... |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Donuel Date: 02 Aug 22 - 07:57 AM Are they paid the same as men? |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Rain Dog Date: 02 Aug 22 - 10:02 AM My sister was at the final and she said that the atmosphere was great. The tournament was a great success. Credit should be given to all the organisers, helpers and the fans for making such a great job of it. The aim now is to build on that success. That means putting the money and the hard work in at grass roots level. Let us hope that they are able to do that. A good start would be stopping schools from selling off playing fields. |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 02 Aug 22 - 06:16 PM They are "The Lionesses"!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Steve Shaw Date: 02 Aug 22 - 06:33 PM We know, honest. |
Subject: RE: BS: The girls done good! From: Bonzo3legs Date: 03 Aug 22 - 01:33 AM Bobby Moore would have been proud of the girls' team, I knew his daughter Roberta - did her art gallery accounts for a while!! |
