Thanks.

Also saw somewhere a compilation of surviving trek actors' tributes, sorted by show. Made me weep.

For Completeness Dept:

Mrzzy> From something with Closing Hailing Frequencies in the headline

That would be the obituary in The Register.

This is Nichelle Nichols herself talking about the meeting with MLK.
Can't get more 'primary source' than that.
Uhura

That said, there are an awful lot of "everybody knows" factoids that don't have any basis. They're urban legends. This just isn't one of those things, and it's a good thing to find the truth of it.

I don't find it hard to understand why MLK would find Star Trek, and Roddenberry, in the lead when it came to human rights, including anti-racism. I'm very glad Nichols played such a ground-breaking role.

Garg, if you had access to a search engine such as Google, and looked for "mlk nichelle nichols", you'd get a load of hits, one of which is "this interview by NPR.

She was wanting to leave the Star Trek program, but at one point she ended up meeting King, who told her not to leave. I just looked at the Guardian article (maybe I first read it there) and was pleased at that outcome.

Interview on Archive of American Television talks about possibly leaving Star Trek.

There are searches on YouTube for Nichols' singing, and the Star Trek episode is at the top.

Looks like a performance at one of the conventions she attended (2014).

Here are the results of the YouTube search.

Very sad. She was way ahead of her time and one of the few people on TV who could easily slot into much newer productions.

Good article in The Guardian that answers Gargoyles request and many more

RIP Ms Nicols

Thanks, Mrrzy - I saw something about Duke Ellington, but not Ms Nichol's vocal range.
Now that EBarnacle said something about MLK, I remember it.

Of course Mr. Spock was involved.

She started as a singer.

From something with Closing Hailing Frequencies in the headline:

"... her four-octave vocal range saw her perform with Duke Ellington at the tender age of 14 and sparked aspirations to become a singer..."

Martin Luther King kept her from quitting Star Trek. she felt she was being mistreated. word got to him and he persuaded her by emphasizing that she was a role model for women and minorties.

I can't find anything about a "4-octave range", although it might have been claimed in something I haven't seen. I definitely don't know what it has to do with Vulcan, unless Mr Spock is somehow involved. I do remember that Martin Luther King met her once, and if I'm not mistaken, was proud of her. I can understand that. It was many years ago, but I watched the first showing of all the original Star Trek episodes, and could see how ground-breakingly courageous they were.

There's a nice article on the Guardian website about her life. I particularly liked the photo of her with Obama.

A 4-octave range! Not surprised Vulcan had no moon.

I am sad, though.
