I'll be crossing the pond for a few days next week and will be staying in Alexandria, VA. Do any 'Catters have suggestions for local music, sessions, etc? Any hints will be much appreciated.

All the best,

mcmoo

There's a place called Ireland's Own where Laura the Fiddler plays from time to time (on weekends, she says). Her group is Laura O'Kelly and the Thistle Streetband.

The Folklore Society of Greater Washington has a regular English country dance on Wednesday night. There's a contra dance every Friday and Sunday night. All the dances have good live music. There's a great house concert of American old-timey music featuring Bill and Libby Hicks (Bill was in the original Red Clay Ramblers)on Saturday the 22nd. None of these are in Alexandria, but there are loads of Mudcatters in the greater D.C. area, and if any of this stuff interests you, a ride can probably be arranged. Also there's lots of Irish music in various clubs/bars too numerous to mention. Cates in Alexandria has good jazz almost if not every night. When you get to D.C., you can call the Folklore Society hotline at (202)546-2228 for a recording on the week's events. Before you leave, you can check the FSGW website at www.fsgw.org, which lists everything going on.

Send me a personal e-mail message and let me know where you're staying. If you'd like to get together while you're here, maybe we can arrange something. I can also arrange for a copy of the FSGW newsletter to get to you at your hotel. Have a good trip!

Kathy Westra

The national center for folk and performing arts is located at Wolf-Trap. You should try to include it in your visit, everything from entertainment to workshops and living-history. I love the place. You can look over their offerings at their site wolf-trap.org

Will you be here until Sat the 29th? The Folklore Society's MiniFest is that day. If the times can be worked out, maybe someone could pick you up at the nearest Metro and take you to it. There will be a whole lot of mudcatters there, including Kathy Westra and many others who are scheduled to perform or lead song swaps. Also the music will be not just good but great. (See recent thread on the MiniFest). You might also want to send a message to Bill D (my spouse) and Charlie Baum as to where and when, etc. They know lots of stuff and lots of people.
