Could this possibly be "I Almost Lost My Mind"? Mindy Carson was a 50s songbird in the days when white pop singers were routinely covering R&B songs.

If you like this song, check out Ivory Joe Hunter's "I Almost Lost My Mind," which is a similar structure, but an even better song.
