There is a parody of this song in the database ("Just a Bug at Twilight" - very droll!) but who has the words and/or chords for the straight version?

That would be LOVE'S OLD SWEET SONG. There are three sets of sheet music scored for voice and piano at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music. (JPEG images.)  click here for the title page of one of them; you can then follow links to the other three pages.

Now, If I can hit the right buttons, here are the words..... (chords and melody are available, but not till tomorrow night)

LOVE'S OLD SWEET SONG
(Words, G. Clifton Bingham. Music, J. L. Molloy. 1890.)

Once in the dear dead days beyond recall,
When on the world the mists began to fall,
Out of the dreams that rose in happy throng,
Low in our hearts, love sang an old sweet song;
And in the dusk where fell the firelight gleam,
Softly it wove itself into our dream.

CHORUS: Just a song a twilight, when the lights are low,
And the flick'ring shadows softly come and go.
Tho' the heart be weary, sad the day and long,
Still to us at twilight comes Love's old song,
Comes Love's old sweet song.

Even today we hear love's song of yore.
Deep in our hearts it dwells for evermore.
Footsteps may falter, weary grow the way,
Still we can hear it at the close of day;
So till the end, when life's dim shadows fall,
Love will be found the sweetest song of all. CHORUS

Our version went something like

Just a thong at thigh height....

According to James J. Fuld (The Book of World-Famous Music, 5th ed., Dover, 2000, p. 342), "Love's Old Sweet Song" was "[p]ublished Oct. 13, 1884, by Boosey & Co." The original arrangement [midi] with lyrics is at Publish Domain Music: Music from 1866-1899, under "1884." The 1890 edition is also at Historic American Sheet Music.

This Australian edition seems to be an exact reproduction of the first edition (including its cover).

Irene Pavloska's audio recording (recorded: ca Jan 1920) is at The Virtual Gramophone.

I always understood the opening line (and I think it makes marginally more sense) to be:-
"Oft in the dear dead days beyond recall"
