Subject: Lyr Req: Huggada Huggada Taypot Jack From: Alice Date: 22 Oct 22 - 02:08 PM I just watched a lovely video of the singing of Huggada Huggada Taypot Jack performed by girls in the National Library of Ireland. I've searched for the lyrics with no success. The video was recorded by Michael Fortune and posted on the folklore.ie facebook page. Here is what Michael wrote: "Here’s a little video I recorded on my phone of Aileen and the girls performing ‘Huggada Huggada Taypot Jack’ in the National Library of Ireland in Dublin last night. I did a presentation on Hallowe’en Traditions from Ireland and just as we were finishing up, the girls came in as a ‘surprise’ at the end and sang. The video/sound quality isn’t the best but the library have another recording which will be shared in the coming days. Enjoy this in the meantime - a Hallowe’en song from Ireland." Can anyone help me by providing the lyrics? Thanks. Alice in Montana |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Huggada Huggada Taypot Jack From: Alice Date: 22 Oct 22 - 02:16 PM Well, looking farther on the video, I found that Michael posted the lyrics. Here are the words: Taypot Jack TAYPOT JACK At Halloween in the dark of night With our vizzards on, we looked some sight All dressed up in auld hags clothes Covered up from our heads to our toes CHORUS ‘With a hugadda hugadda Taypot Jack Tonight you’d better watch your back’ ‘With a hugadda hugadda’ me mother said ‘Tonight’s for the living and the dead’ We traipsed the fields and walked the roads All dressed up with our heavy loads We met the Púca and the Bow The divil knows what, black dogs and sows “Well who are you?” they would say “We’ve come from far far far away. Sure you wouldn’t know me at all, at all, In my father’s boots and my mother’s shawl”. “Be careful now on the auld back road As the Bawman there he is known to stroll, Any child found in his way, He’ll steal them off and their souls away” We met Willie the Wisp and Jack the Lad, The Poochy Pawman he’s half mad, We played cards with the divil and songs we sang, And shared our sweets and colcannon. Homeward bound before midnight, Walking the road in the full moon light, We bid good night to the poor auld souls, And come next year, we’ll meet you all. Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Huggada Huggada Taypot Jack From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Oct 22 - 02:41 PM What a great song, Alice! Here's what Michael Fortune says on the notes for the YouTube video:
Here is an Irish children's Hallowe’en song for you performed by our girls last night. For a country rich in the tradition of Hallowe’en we had almost no songs about the night, so in 2018 I wrote this for the girls. The song is centered around a rural Irish Hallowe’en experience; the characters, the food, the antics and the sentiment. Some of the figures you will recognise while more are specific to where I grew up in Wexford. This was filmed in one take last night, no fancy editing - everything just natural, simple and straightforward. It is called ‘Hugadda Hugadda Taypot Jack’ but ‘Taypot Jack’ for short. Where I grew up my mother always spoke of how they never threw out water or emptied the taypot outside on this night without saying these words as they didn’t want to wet the souls. The phrase was a warning to them as many of them believed the souls walked the roads at Hallowe’en; a night “for the living and the dead”. Aileen works in primary schools sharing traditional songs and this song is a bit hit as the little ones can relate to it from their own experiences and from the stories of their parents and grandparents. Enjoy. Text: Michael Fortune https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b2nNmdrujU |

Some great videos, usually pairs of friends, having a chat after a gentle prod from Michael. And those three girls feature quite a lot; it's been great seeing them growing up. https://m.facebook.com/folklore.ie http://www.folklore.ie |
