Subject: Peter Wood RIP
From: Richard Mellish
Date: 08 Nov 22 - 05:33 AM

Just posted by Steve Roud on the Tradsong (Traditional Song Forum, TSF) mailing list.
"Sad news that Peter Wood, one of our friends and colleagues, has died, after a long illness. Many people will have known him on the folk scene as a singer and musician, and he has been a firm supporter of the TSF since its inception. He wrote three important books, 'The Green Linnet' (on Napoleonic songs),' The Elliotts of Birtley' and 'Johnny Handle: Life and Soul' and numerous articles, and gave presentations at our meetings and conferences. He was a good man, and will be missed."

I have no further information.

Very sorry to hear this. I first met him just before he moved to Newcastle, at his leaving party in Thames Ditton in 1974.... a great bloke and a very fine and knowledgeable singer.

Kitty

this is very sad- Pete was a lovely bloke & a marching pal from Durham Miners'Gala for years. I met him first when we were residents at Rod & Danny Stradling's club at the Fighting Cocks in Kingston on Thames, in the late sixties.
I flogged him my Wheatstone concertina when I left to head north again in 1970- £45 I think!
I was surprised to find him years later as a stalwart of the North East folk scene & member of the High Level Ranters.
A knowledgeable and musically tolerant man who will be a great loss- commiserations to his nearest & dearest.    RIP old friend

And him nobbut a lad.
Always great company, fine musician and remarkable singer.
Many happy memories going back over many years.
He on more than one occasion accused me - tongue in cheek - of leading him astray by introducing him to Blackbush (Irish Whisky).
Guilty as charged m'lud.
