Originally sung in churches by musicians and choirs, the carol tradition in the Victorian era suffered what must have appeared to some as a huge reverse. Carols, it seemed, had failed the Victorian humour test and all but a few were driven out of churches. They found a new home, however, in pubs around Sheffield and South Yorkshire, where they found favour and sometimes a licentious edge. They flourish there today where the tradition has survived intact and according to the international carol singing expert, the musicologist Dr Ian Russell, Professor Emeritus of the University of Aberdeen, the movement is proving increasingly popular, spreading across county lines to other part of the UK and abroad. And the tradition of carol composing is still evolving there too - there are over 30 charted versions of While Shepherds Watched, for instance, including revivals of once lost examples. Elizabeth Alker sets out in search of lost carols, a thriving and binding social phenomenon, speaking with Dr. Russell, local punters for whom these carols serve an important social function and folk musicians like Kate Rusby, brought up on the pub carolling tradition and one of the vast array of musicians who are enabling this hidden tradition to flourish. Subject: RE: BBC Radio This week 2023 From: Rain Dog Date: 25 Dec 23 - 12:47 AM On BBC Radio 4 last nighg was a repeat of a programme originally broadcast in 2015 Soul Music - Fairytale of New York "The tragi-comic tale of love gone sour and shattered dreams eloquently depicted in the Christmas classic Fairytale of New York is the focus of this edition of Soul Music. James Fearnley, pianist with The Pogues recounts how the song started off as a transatlantic love story between an Irish seafarer missing his girl at Christmas before becoming the bittersweet reminiscences of the Irish immigrant down on his luck in the Big Apple, attempting to win back the woman he wooed with promises of 'cars big as bars and rivers of gold'. Gaelic footballer Alisha Jordan came to New York to play football aged 17 from County Meath in Ireland. Despite being dazzled by the glamour and pace of New York City, she missed her family and friends and stencilled the words 'Fairytale of New York' on her apartment wall as an affirmation of her determination to make the most of her new life in the city. When she was later attacked on the street by a stranger, the words came to signify her battle to recover and not to let the horrific facial injuries she suffered defeat her or her ambition to captain her football team. Rachel Burdett posted the video of the song onto her friend Michelle's social media page to let her know she was thinking of her and praying for her safe return when Michelle went missing suddenly one December. Stories of redemption and of a recognition that Christmas is often not the fairytale we are sold, told through a seasonal favourite. Producer: Maggie Ayre." |

Subject: RE: BBC Radio This week 2023 From: FreddyHeadey Date: 16 Jan 24 - 10:40 AM Recording on the Nomads' Trail Sunday Feature - December 2023 Musician Paul Purgas explores the life of Deben Bhattacharya, the uncelebrated godfather of Indian field recording. Bhattacharya’s recordings have shaped the way the West has listened to the sounds of South Asia and beyond and the vastness of his output is remarkable: he produced over 100 records, 23 films and published more than a dozen books during his lifetime. He also left over 400 hours of tape recordings going far beyond India. Who was the man behind it all? And what are we to make of his legacy today? In Stockholm, Purgas visits the Musikverket archives to learn more about Bhattacharya’s approach to documenting songs and traditions. Here was a man who had dedicated his life to capturing the sounds of music, landscape and life on the road, embarking on extensive field recording trips throughout Asia and Europe; and yet his name seems to have been somewhat forgotten from the histories of what is now known as World Music. Purgas charts Bhattacharya’s journey, from his early life in India, to his work with the BBC where he introduced Indian music to British listeners in the 1950s. We hear first-hand accounts of Bhattacharya’s travels, explore the new possibilities that technology had to offer at the time, and delve into the rich archive of sounds recorded along the way. With contributions from: Dr DM Withers, Lecturer in Publishing at the University of Exeter Robert Millis, Seattle-based sound artist Srimoyi Bhattacharya, Bhattacharya’s daughter Birgit Lundin, Bhattacharya’s ex-wife Adim Lundin, Bhattacharya’s son Wictor Johansson, archivist at Musikverket in Stockholm Moushumi Bhowmik, Bengali musician and researcher Sushrita Acharjee, Doctoral scholar at Jadavpur University www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001t2jj |
Subject: RE: BBC Radio This week 2023 From: FreddyHeadey Date: 22 Jan 24 - 08:22 PM Soundtrack to life - September 2023 Start the Week The American singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant often uses fictional or mythological characters in her songs, to capture contemporary and political concerns. Her latest album, Keep Your Courage, is a song cycle composed entirely of love songs. She tells Kirsty Wark she wanted to explore the isolation of illness and the power of care, felt in the last few years. In his new book, Musical Truth, the educator and broadcaster Jeffrey Boakye creates a soundtrack that encapsulates key historical moments of the 20th and 21st century – from the carving up of Africa to feminism and football. Using jazz, disco and hip hop he explores how music both feeds into and mirrors its time, as well as its political and cultural impact. But the writer Michel Faber is more interested in how music affects the individual. In a collection of essays, Listen: On Music, Sound and Us, he explores what’s going on inside when we listen to a whole range of tunes. And he asks two questions: how do we listen to music and why? www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001ry9f |
