The Museum of the Bible suggests that the hymn was first sung at the Manor Of Olney rather than the Parish Church. "It was January 1, 1773. John Newton led his congregation down the road from the parish church in Olney, England, to Lord Dartmouth’s Great Hall to sing “new” music not traditionally allowed by the Anglican Church." The Lordship of Olney; Lord Dartmouth’s great interest in the Evangelical Revival earned him the name of the Psalm Singer, and though Colonial Secretary in 1772–5 and Lord Privy Seal in 1775–82 he found opportunity for interest in the schemes of Newton and for correspondence with the leading members of the seriously-minded society of his day. The Museum of the Bible; January 1, 2023, is the 250th anniversary of the first time “Amazing Grace” was ever sung. In celebration, Museum of the Bible has launched an online exhibit today. Enjoy a timeline of some of the most pivotal moments in the song’s life and see how each verse of the song corresponds to a part of Newton’s New Year’s Day sermon. Folk musician Johnny Campbell is recording an album of songs from the summits and industrial hotspots of northern England. Jez Lowe joins him at Kinder Scout in Derbyshire to celebrate ninety years since the ‘Right to Roam’ movement began and explore the traditional songs of the Peak District. Jez meets local singer Bella Hardy to hear how her home in Edale has inspired and influenced her work, and writer Roly Smith who can explain the history of Kinder and the 1932 mass trespass. It may be ninety years ago, but for young global folk stars Kate Griffin and Ford Collier of Mishra, the call for a right to roam is still relevant. They have recorded a version of Ewan MacColl’s ‘Manchester Rambler’, a song inspired by the Kinder trespass. In the heart of the town is the "plen-an-gwari", one of the last of the Cornish medieval amphitheatres built to host a sequence of religious mystery plays, the Ordinalia. Centuries after their suppression, the plays were revived in the 2000s as a community-wide venture that once again brought them, and the "plen", to the centre of community life. I recognised that name right away, but didn't recognise the name "Carolina Oliphant". I found the programme, immensely interesting, and commend it to you - even though it is mostly talk and a lot of the singing featured is performed in what I would call a parlour song style. Cath Long, a fellow member, wrote to Ramblings to ask Clare to join them on a hike in the South Pennines near Todmorden in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. So, on a chilly, wet and blustery Saturday in early January, they met by the Shepherd’s Rest pub and headed into the hills to ramble and sing. Boff created a choir manifesto, and one aim was to 'rehearse until we're brilliant' and they really are. Their Skelmanthorpe Flag Song (https://youtu.be/SIsryw_3gfk), which they performed at the historic Basin Stone, was heard by fellow walkers at least two miles down in the valley. So I finally got round to listening. And I was startled: she had an orchestral backing! She'd been smoothed down, made more familiar to the proms audience. I've seen Mariza live several times, but always with her own backing group. Here she had an accordian, Spanish guitar, Portuguese guitar, bass and drums. She initially performed with her sister, Dolly Collins, and also collaborated with other folk luminaries to create some of the era’s most beloved albums. In the past decade she has made an acclaimed return to the concert stage and the recording studio. Shirley lives in Sussex, not far from her childhood home. Shirley was born in Sussex in 1935. She can still recall how her grandfather used to sing folk songs to comfort her while they were sheltering during German air raids in the early 1940s. Alongside her career as a singer, in the 1950s she travelled to the American South with Alan Lomax, where they made field recordings of blues and folk musicians, helping to create a significant archive. Later in her performing career, Shirley found that she could no longer sing, following a distressing betrayal in her private life. She stepped away from music and was silent for many years, taking on other work, including a stint in a job centre Then, in her 80s, she found her voice again. In 2016 she released her first new album after a gap of almost four decades, and she has since released two more albums. Rt Hon Sir Mike Penning, MP for Hemel Hempstead brought forward the motion and started by saying, in his constituency, BBC Three Counties will turn into BBC Eight Counties on the weekend under current plans. Sir Mike said: “This is about people. The way that the HR department have handled this is absolutely appalling for a public body. “This house will not tolerate the undermining of local radio in our constituencies.” Andy Carter, MP for Warrington South and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Commercial Radio, added: This house expects Ofcom to regulate the BBC, to ensure it robustly holds to account the management of the BBC for delivering local services.” Mrs Emma Lewell-Buck, MP for South Shields: “Disgracefully, it was through the pandemic that the BBC started these cuts asking over 100 staff to take voluntary redundancy, stripping back the schedules, forcing all shows to have four hour slots, with solo presenters. “This set the scene to make the cuts they want to make now and merging everything from 2pm onwards. For the nation’s flagship broadcaster to introduce these changes without consulting the fee paying public is pretty appalling.” Rt Hon Sir Robert Buckland KC MP for South Swindon said: “Without local radio then local people are not going to be informed.” The Conservative MP paid tribute to community radio station Swindon 105.5 but said the BBC has an obligation to provide a local public service. Many MPs promoted the benefits of local radio including having local conversations with local people, local weather being provided, engagement with listeners and local journalists providing local news – although these elements will still be heard on each local service albeit for fewer hours each day. Local radio stations will continue to provide local news, and local programmes for eight hours per weekday, although the majority of the discussion assumed the entire network was being closed down. Over 20 MPs from all over the UK debated the issue for almost two hours, all agreeing the planned reductions to local programmes will cause a substantial change to the network. In closing, Sir Mike Penning said: “This is what Parliament is about. Parliament has come together on a motion to tell the BBC what they are doing is wrong. Rt Hon Sir Mike Penning, MP for Hemel Hempstead brought forward the motion and started by saying, in his constituency, BBC Three Counties will turn into BBC Eight Counties on the weekend under current plans. Sir Mike said: “This is about people. The way that the HR department have handled this is absolutely appalling for a public body. “This house will not tolerate the undermining of local radio in our constituencies.” Andy Carter, MP for Warrington South and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Commercial Radio, added: This house expects Ofcom to regulate the BBC, to ensure it robustly holds to account the management of the BBC for delivering local services.” Mrs Emma Lewell-Buck, MP for South Shields: “Disgracefully, it was through the pandemic that the BBC started these cuts asking over 100 staff to take voluntary redundancy, stripping back the schedules, forcing all shows to have four hour slots, with solo presenters. “This set the scene to make the cuts they want to make now and merging everything from 2pm onwards. For the nation’s flagship broadcaster to introduce these changes without consulting the fee paying public is pretty appalling.” Rt Hon Sir Robert Buckland KC MP for South Swindon said: “Without local radio then local people are not going to be informed.” The Conservative MP paid tribute to community radio station Swindon 105.5 but said the BBC has an obligation to provide a local public service. Many MPs promoted the benefits of local radio including having local conversations with local people, local weather being provided, engagement with listeners and local journalists providing local news – although these elements will still be heard on each local service albeit for fewer hours each day. Local radio stations will continue to provide local news, and local programmes for eight hours per weekday, although the majority of the discussion assumed the entire network was being closed down. Over 20 MPs from all over the UK debated the issue for almost two hours, all agreeing the planned reductions to local programmes will cause a substantial change to the network. In closing, Sir Mike Penning said: “This is what Parliament is about. Parliament has come together on a motion to tell the BBC what they are doing is wrong. Radio London (Mike Sparrow - not just folk), Radio Oxford (Roger Watson), 3-Counties Radio (? Meek and Phil Richards) and most recently Radio Kent (Doug Welch). Genevieve's was always the most ideosyncratic. Perhaps she'll start a podcast - Mike Harding has stopped his. (And sold his bass concertina!) They survived - indeed were revived after the first set of cutbacks - in Shropshire and Mereseyside, and a new programme started in Sheffield.
