Subject: RE: Obit: Jeff Beck RIP (1944-2023) From: Stanron Date: 29 Jan 23 - 06:52 AM Last night Sky Arts (UK Freeview TV channel 11) had a two hour plus show of Jeff Beck and friends at, I think, the Hollywood Bowl. It was filmed something like five years ago Wonderful stuff. Not folk of course but there was some absolutely amazing stuff. He was a unique guitar player with widest range of styles, moods, techniques and sounds. All these were on show, but also his ability to back up a wide range of singers and allow them to shine was a joy to see. Two outstanding moments for me were a song by Billy Gibbons, I didn't catch the name, but would have been happy if it had gone on for a lot longer and the final track, Purple Rain. If you can catch this as a streamer then you should. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jeff Beck RIP (1944-2023) From: GUEST Date: 29 Jan 23 - 03:49 AM I had the good fortune of seeing Jeff play in Birmingham last year. I had never seen him live before and was astounded by him. He took guitar music to another level and was entirely different to any of the other players I've been lucky enough to see over the decades. He was undoubtedly one of the greats and will be sorely missed. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jeff Beck RIP (1944-2023) From: Felipa Date: 25 Jan 23 - 07:40 PM I was surprised to come across this recording of Jeff Beck and company playing "Mná na hÉireann" (Irish Gaelic, "women of Ireland") maybe this tune was chosen/known about because Kate Bush recorded the song? Here Jeff Beck backs Sharon Corr on Mná na hÉireann (the other musicians are not credited) The tune was composed by Seán Ó Riada, who did classical arrangements of Irish traditional music (incorporating instruments such as the uilleann pipes and the bodhrán), and founded Ceoltóirí Chualann, the forerunner of The Chieftains band. The Mná na hÉireann lyrics were written by 18th century poet Peadar ó Doirnín. Here is an accoustic rendition of the song Seosaimhín Ní Bheaglaioch and Steve Cooney |

Subject: RE: 2023 Obit: Jeff Beck RIP From: Sol Date: 11 Jan 23 - 08:24 PM His big 'pop' hit was "Hi Ho Silver Lining" which he apperently hated in the aftermath of it being a hit. As the great guitarist that he was, I can see why he would feel aggrieved at being mostly remembered for that song by the general public. |
